  1. A covered commercial combination has a 40,000-pound GCWR and tows a trailer rated at 12,000 pounds GVWR. Which vehicle group applies?

    Correct answer: Group A.

The combination meets the 26,001-pound GCWR threshold and the towed unit exceeds 10,000 pounds GVWR. Both parts of the Group A definition matter; the trailer need not itself reach 26,001 pounds.

  2. A 28,000-pound-GVWR straight truck tows a trailer rated at exactly 10,000 pounds GVWR. Which group covers this combination under the stated ratings?

    Correct answer: Group B.

A Group B heavy straight vehicle may tow a unit not exceeding 10,000 pounds GVWR. Exactly 10,000 is not more than 10,000; the Group A towed-unit condition is not met.

  3. A covered bus is below the Group A and B weight thresholds and is designed for 15 passengers plus the driver. Which CDL group applies?

    Correct answer: Group C.

Group C includes a vehicle below the A/B definitions that is designed for at least 16 people including the driver. Fifteen passenger seats plus the driver reach that threshold.

Source: 383.91(a)(3). eCFR displayed Title 49 current through September 17, 2026. Read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Initial licensing knowledge, not an individual eligibility determination. ↗

  4. A small delivery truck meets neither Group A nor B, but carries hazardous material that brings it within the CDL hazardous-material definition. Which group applies?

Correct answer: Group C, with the required hazardous-material endorsement.

Hazardous-material use can place a smaller vehicle in Group C even when it does not meet Group A or B. The class does not replace a required endorsement or other shipment qualifications.

Source: 383.91(a)(3). eCFR displayed Title 49 current through September 17, 2026. Read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Initial licensing knowledge, not an individual eligibility determination. ↗

  5. An applicant has not qualified for the passenger endorsement. Can completing only school-bus-specific study satisfy all school-bus endorsement requirements?

Correct answer: No; passenger endorsement qualification is also required.

School-bus applicants must qualify for the passenger endorsement as well as satisfy school-bus knowledge and skills requirements. The required school-bus skills test uses the same vehicle group as the bus to be driven.

Source: 383.123(a)(1)–(3). eCFR displayed Title 49 current through September 17, 2026. Read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Initial licensing knowledge, not an individual eligibility determination. ↗

  6. In the endorsement field of a CDL, what does code X represent?

Correct answer: Combined tank-vehicle and hazardous-material endorsements.

CDL endorsement X combines tank and hazardous-material privileges. Read the document and field carefully: a CLP restriction code X has a different meaning and is not a hazardous-material endorsement.

  7. An applicant takes the CDL skills test in a truck without air brakes. What equipment restriction follows if the license is issued?

Correct answer: No operation of a CMV with any type of air brakes.

A non-air-brake skills-test vehicle results in the air-brake restriction. For this purpose, the rule includes systems using air fully or partially; an air-over-hydraulic system is not a way around that restriction.

Source: 383.95(a)(1)–(2). eCFR displayed Title 49 current through September 17, 2026. Read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Initial licensing knowledge, not an individual eligibility determination. ↗

  8. An applicant passes the skills test in a vehicle with air-over-hydraulic brakes. What brake-system restriction is required?

Correct answer: The driver may not operate a CMV with full air brakes.

The full-air-brake restriction differs from the broader no-air-brake restriction. Testing on a system that combines air and hydraulics does not establish qualification on a system operating fully on air.

Source: 383.95(b)(1)–(2). eCFR displayed Title 49 current through September 17, 2026. Read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Initial licensing knowledge, not an individual eligibility determination. ↗

  9. A CDL restriction field contains V. What does this code identify?

Correct answer: Medical variance information on the driver's record.

V identifies a medical variance recorded in CDLIS and on the CDL. The letter is not a substitute for reading the applicable variance conditions or verifying the driver's current privileges.

Source: 383.95(g). eCFR displayed Title 49 current through September 17, 2026. Read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Initial licensing knowledge, not an individual eligibility determination. ↗

  10. A CDL shows restriction K. What operating limit does that code state?

    Correct answer: Intrastate only.

K identifies intrastate-only authority. Do not interpret the code as general permission for an interstate assignment or assume that remaining inside one state's borders resolves every commerce classification question.

Source: 383.153(a)(10)(vii). eCFR displayed Title 49 current through September 17, 2026. Read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Initial licensing knowledge, not an individual eligibility determination. ↗

  11. A trainee brings an Alabama CLP but no underlying driver license. Is the CLP by itself the complete credential needed for public-road practice?

Correct answer: No; it must be accompanied by a valid underlying license from the same jurisdiction.

The CLP is a separate document and is invalid without the underlying license from the same issuing jurisdiction. Qualified supervision and the other permit conditions are still required.

Source: 383.153(b)(2)(i); see also 383.25(a)(2), (b). eCFR displayed Title 49 current through September 17, 2026. Read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Initial licensing knowledge, not an individual eligibility determination. ↗

  12. On an ordinary truck training trip, the properly qualified supervising CDL holder plans to ride in the sleeper. Is that compliant supervision?

Correct answer: No; the supervisor must sit beside the trainee in the front seat and directly supervise.

The accompanying driver needs the proper class, endorsements and authority for the trip and must directly observe the learner from the required position. Passenger vehicles have a separately specified seating arrangement.

Source: 383.25(a)(1). eCFR displayed Title 49 current through September 17, 2026. Read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Initial licensing knowledge, not an individual eligibility determination. ↗

  13. A 17-year-old has passed a commercial general knowledge test. Does that satisfy the federal minimum age for a CLP?

Correct answer: No; the federal CLP minimum is 18.

The federal permit age floor is 18. Meeting that floor does not itself authorize every type of commercial trip; other state, interstate, endorsement and qualification requirements still need to be met.

Source: 383.25(a)(4). eCFR displayed Title 49 current through September 17, 2026. Read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Initial licensing knowledge, not an individual eligibility determination. ↗

  14. A first-time CDL applicant received a CLP ten days ago and feels ready. Under the ordinary federal rule, may the applicant take the CDL skills test now?

Correct answer: No; the first 14 days after initial CLP issuance are ineligible for that test.

The CLP holding requirement prevents skills testing during the first 14 days after initial issuance. Completing that period does not replace any applicable ELDT, scheduling or other eligibility requirement.

Source: 383.25(d)–(e). eCFR displayed Title 49 current through September 17, 2026. Read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Initial licensing knowledge, not an individual eligibility determination. ↗

  15. An Alabama CLP has reached the end of its 360-day validity. What does ALEA require next?

Correct answer: Retake the written tests and obtain a new CLP.

ALEA does not renew this permit. Expiration requires new written testing and a new CLP.

Source: CLP issuance-period answer. Read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Initial licensing knowledge, not an individual eligibility determination. ↗

  16. A required DOT medical certification is missing from an Alabama CDL record. Who should the driver contact to submit or correct it?

Correct answer: The medical examiner who issued it.

ALEA receives the medical information electronically. The issuing medical examiner handles missing or incorrect submissions; the driver should verify the corrected record.

Source: DOT medical-card submission and correction answers. Read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Initial licensing knowledge, not an individual eligibility determination. ↗

  17. A worker has an Alabama hardship license and a job requiring CDL privileges. Does the hardship license itself authorize the commercial driving?

Correct answer: No; it does not provide commercial driving privileges.

Alabama's hardship license does not grant commercial privileges. Permission for qualifying personal trips is not a substitute for the CDL authority required by the job.

Source: Commercial Motor Vehicle question. Read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Initial licensing knowledge, not an individual eligibility determination. ↗

  18. A driver expects interstate commercial work and is subject to Part 391, including its medical-certification requirement. Which self-certification fits that stated operation?

    Correct answer: Non-excepted interstate.

The category follows the operation and applicable qualification requirements. A covered interstate driver does not become excepted merely by preferring not to obtain medical certification.

Source: 383.71(b)(1)(i). eCFR displayed Title 49 current through September 17, 2026. Read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Initial licensing knowledge, not an individual eligibility determination. ↗

  19. A driver's work is exclusively intrastate and is subject to state driver-qualification requirements, with no stated exception. Which self-certification fits?

    Correct answer: Non-excepted intrastate.

Non-excepted intrastate is the category for intrastate operations subject to state qualification requirements. It does not by itself declare the driver medically exempt or eligible for an interstate assignment.

Source: 383.71(b)(1)(iii). eCFR displayed Title 49 current through September 17, 2026. Read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Initial licensing knowledge, not an individual eligibility determination. ↗

  20. A CLP applicant held only a passenger-car license in another state eight years ago. Must that state appear in the required licensing history?

Correct answer: Yes; the history covers any motor-vehicle license within the previous ten years.

The application requires the names of all states where the applicant was licensed to drive any motor vehicle in the previous ten years. A noncommercial license within that period belongs in the history.

Source: 383.71(a)(7). eCFR displayed Title 49 current through September 17, 2026. Read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Initial licensing knowledge, not an individual eligibility determination. ↗

  1. An Alabama truck driver completes only the Alabama delivery leg of a cargo shipment whose journey began in Tennessee. For the commerce classification described in ALEA's CDL manual, does staying inside Alabama make that leg intrastate?

Correct answer: No; the cargo is on a journey that began outside Alabama.

The manual includes cargo or passengers whose journey begins or ends outside the state in interstate commerce, even when this driver's leg remains in Alabama. The shipment's journey matters, not only the truck's border crossing. This classification does not by itself establish the driver's age, medical exception or endorsement eligibility.

Sources and coverage

The two numbered tests partition the same 40 records without changing their allocations. The separate scenario on this page adds one interstate-cargo decision. Random practice and mistake review use all 41 licensing records. Our 20-question format is a study setting, not a verified official Alabama licensing exam length or passing score.

The original 40 records were reviewed September 21, 2026 using the official HTML references below. The eCFR displayed Title 49 current through September 17, 2026. FMCSA's ELDT overview was updated February 4, 2026. ALEA's skills-test announcement is dated June 13, 2025 and describes the July 1, 2025 transition; it is not a new 2026 handbook edition.

Coverage includes A/B/C vehicle groups, endorsements versus equipment restrictions, supervised CLP driving and cargo limits, medical-record correction, selected Alabama application requirements, self-certification categories, licensing history and ELDT timing. A higher license class does not cancel endorsement or equipment restrictions. Federal permit minimums do not establish eligibility for every Alabama or interstate assignment.

These are original study scenarios, not copied official exam questions. This is initial licensing coverage, not a complete eligibility checklist, legal advice, medical qualification decision or ELDT course. Additional Alabama age and intrastate rules, fees, exemptions, transfers and renewals, the full range of disqualification rules, TSA procedures and the complete modernized skills curriculum require further study. Verify your own status and required documents with ALEA before applying or driving.

Practice quizzes do not certify training or replace a registered training provider, supervised driving or the required official tests. Do not treat a quiz result as permission to operate a commercial vehicle.

Continue with 20 driver-responsibility questions on employer notifications, selected disqualifications and Clearinghouse duties. These are separate from this 41-question licensing question set.

The additional commerce scenario uses the ALEA-linked CDL Manual, section 1.2.1, printed page 1-6 / physical PDF page 16, checked September 29, 2026. Its body is July 2017 with a December 1, 2023 introductory letter; the 4.9.24 filename is not a new edition. This cargo-journey classification does not establish an Alabama age/class eligibility rule. Read the ALEA-linked CDL manual
