  1. Does passing the modernized vehicle-inspection test show that you checked every item in the federal inspection rules?

Correct answer: No; the test samples safety-critical inspection knowledge.

Section 11M describes a safety-critical test, not every federal inspection guideline. Drivers must still know and carry out the inspections required for their operation.

  2. For the Section 11M inspection test, which checklist preparation is permitted?

Correct answer: Use the provided checklist without added notes before the test.

Alabama permits the supplied checklist and checking off completed items during the test. Do not add an inspection script, reminders or other markings beforehand. You must still identify each item and explain what you are checking.

Source: ALEA Modernized CDL Supplement — Sections 11M and 12M; September 9, 2022; 11M; Permitted checklist use; physical PDF page 4; read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Written preparation, not a practical assessment. ↗

  3. An applicant points to a steering component and says its name. What else does the modernized inspection require?

Correct answer: Explain the condition or defects being checked on that item.

Credit requires identifying the item and explaining what you are inspecting it for. Simply naming a component does not demonstrate knowledge of its safe condition.

Source: ALEA Modernized CDL Supplement — Sections 11M and 12M; September 9, 2022; 11M; Explaining inspected conditions; physical PDF page 4; read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Written preparation, not a practical assessment. ↗

  4. During the Section 11M test, must you crawl underneath the truck to earn inspection credit?

Correct answer: No; the test does not require crawling underneath it.

The handbook expressly says you will not have to crawl under the vehicle. Identify the required items and explain the inspection without putting yourself in an unsafe position.

Source: ALEA Modernized CDL Supplement — Sections 11M and 12M; September 9, 2022; 11M; Safe inspection access; physical PDF page 4; read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Written preparation, not a practical assessment. ↗

  5. A side-view camera lens is clean, but its display cannot be viewed properly from the driver's seat. Is the check complete?

Correct answer: No; the display must work and be adjusted for viewing.

For an equipped vehicle, check both the camera and the inside display. The image must be operable and viewable from the driving position, just as mirrors need proper adjustment.

Source: ALEA Modernized CDL Supplement — Sections 11M and 12M; September 9, 2022; 11M.1.1; Camera display visibility; physical PDF page 5; read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Written preparation, not a practical assessment. ↗

  6. A fire extinguisher has a satisfactory charge but is lying loose on the cab floor. What does the inspection require?

Correct answer: It must be properly charged and secured in the vehicle.

The inspection checks both charge and secure mounting. An extinguisher being present is not enough if it is unsecured or unusable.

Source: ALEA Modernized CDL Supplement — Sections 11M and 12M; September 9, 2022; 11M.1.1; Extinguisher condition and restraint; physical PDF page 4; read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Written preparation, not a practical assessment. ↗

  7. In Alabama's Section 11M hydraulic-brake check, how should the pedal behave during the hold?

Correct answer: It should remain firm without sinking.

The described test pumps the pedal three times and holds it for five seconds, unless the manufacturer specifies a different procedure. The pedal must remain firm without depressing further. Follow the actual system's procedure, including the separate power-assist checks and ignition or engine requirements; an incorrect hydraulic check fails the inspection test.

  8. A bus entrance closes securely, but a step tread is loose. Is the entrance inspection satisfactory?

Correct answer: No; the steps and secure walking surfaces also need inspection.

The entrance check includes the door, handrails, step lights when equipped, clear steps and secure tread. A working door does not make a loose walking surface acceptable.

Source: ALEA Modernized CDL Supplement — Sections 11M and 12M; September 9, 2022; 11M.2; Passenger entrance condition; physical PDF page 7; read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Written preparation, not a practical assessment. ↗

  9. You check the tractor's air and electrical connections. What other location must be included?

Correct answer: The corresponding connections at the trailer end.

Both power-unit and trailer connections must be inspected. Check seating, sealing, security and damage, along with safe routing that avoids tangling, pinching and dragging.

Source: ALEA Modernized CDL Supplement — Sections 11M and 12M; September 9, 2022; 11M.6.1; Both ends of trailer connections; physical PDF page 11; read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Written preparation, not a practical assessment. ↗

  10. Your test combination uses a ball-type coupler rather than a fifth wheel. What should you explain?

Correct answer: How that coupler works and the condition of its actual locking parts.

Coupling systems vary. Inspect the system actually installed, including secure mounting, coupler and tongue condition, and the applicable locking and safety devices.

Source: ALEA Modernized CDL Supplement — Sections 11M and 12M; September 9, 2022; 11M.6.1; Matching the actual coupling type; physical PDF page 12 (locking devices continue on page 13); read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Written preparation, not a practical assessment. ↗

  11. On a non-fifth-wheel combination equipped with safety chains and a breakaway cable, what should you check?

Correct answer: Secure crossed chains without excessive slack, and an engaged breakaway cable.

For the equipped non-fifth-wheel systems described, the handbook checks chains or cables for security, crossing, kinks and excessive slack, and calls for the breakaway cable to be engaged. This is not a claim that every trailer type uses the same devices.

Source: ALEA Modernized CDL Supplement — Sections 11M and 12M; September 9, 2022; 11M.6.1; Coupling safety devices; physical PDF page 13; read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Written preparation, not a practical assessment. ↗

  12. After a trailer's tandem assembly has been positioned, what does the inspection need to confirm?

Correct answer: The tandem release lever and locking pins are secure.

The handbook specifically includes the trailer tandem release lever and pins. Their security is a separate check from the axle's chosen position.

Source: ALEA Modernized CDL Supplement — Sections 11M and 12M; September 9, 2022; 11M.5.3; Trailer tandem locking check; physical PDF page 11; read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Written preparation, not a practical assessment. ↗

  13. Which contact is counted as an encroachment under Section 12M's stated vehicle-part rule?

Correct answer: A low-mounted attachment crossing an exercise boundary.

Alabama's encroachment rule excludes mirrors and the stated unique parts at door-mirror height or higher. Lower parts count if they touch or cross a boundary. The supplement says an encroachment causes the examiner to stop the vehicle and end the test; follow the actual examiner's instructions.

Source: ALEA Modernized CDL Supplement — Sections 11M and 12M; September 9, 2022 / Basic Control Skills update February 9, 2024; 12M.1; Modernized boundary exception; physical PDF page 18; read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Written preparation, not a practical assessment. ↗

  14. In the modernized forward-stop exercise, what should be positioned in the stop box?

Correct answer: The frontmost part identified by the examiner.

Judge the vehicle's frontmost reference point as explained by the examiner, with the stated high-part exceptions. Section 12M allows one stop for this exercise; front-wheel position alone is not the target.

Source: ALEA Modernized CDL Supplement — Sections 11M and 12M; September 9, 2022 / Basic Control Skills update February 9, 2024; 12M.2.1; Forward-stop reference point; physical PDF page 19; read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Written preparation, not a practical assessment. ↗

  15. After completing the modernized forward stop, how do you signal that you are ready to be scored?

Correct answer: Set the parking brake, select neutral and sound the horn.

After the controlled stop, Alabama's Section 12M instructions say to set the parking brake, select neutral and sound the horn. This signals completion so the examiner can score the position; follow the one-stop instruction.

  16. How far do you back through the alley in modernized straight-line backing?

Correct answer: Until the front of the vehicle clears the last set of cones.

The end condition uses the front of the vehicle clearing the final cones at the far end of the alley. Watch the whole vehicle's position rather than stopping as soon as the rear gets through.

Source: ALEA Modernized CDL Supplement — Sections 11M and 12M; September 9, 2022 / Basic Control Skills update February 9, 2024; 12M.2.2; Straight-back completion reference; physical PDF page 19; read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Written preparation, not a practical assessment. ↗

  17. You must stop while waiting to make a turn in the road test. How should the front wheels be positioned?

Correct answer: Aimed straight ahead while waiting.

Section 13 specifies straight front wheels while stopped before the turn. Keep the vehicle from rolling and recheck traffic before starting the maneuver.

Source: ALEA CDL Manual — Section 13, On-road Driving; July 2017 Section 13 text; road test unchanged in ALEA's June 13, 2025 transition notice; 13.1.1; Waiting with straight front wheels; physical PDF page 153; read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Written preparation, not a practical assessment. ↗

  18. A stop is required at an intersection with a marked stop line. What should the road-test stop demonstrate?

Correct answer: A complete controlled stop behind the line, without rolling.

Section 13 evaluates a smooth complete stop at the required position, a safe gap behind vehicles ahead and no forward or backward roll. Vehicle size does not remove the need to respect the stop line.

Source: ALEA CDL Manual — Section 13, On-road Driving; July 2017 Section 13 text; road test unchanged in ALEA's June 13, 2025 transition notice; 13.1.2; Intersection stopping position; physical PDF page 153; read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Written preparation, not a practical assessment. ↗

  19. The examiner requests a lane change on a multi-lane road. What should precede lateral movement?

Correct answer: Traffic checks and the proper signal, followed by a safe gap.

Make the necessary traffic checks, signal and change lanes smoothly when safe. An examiner's request does not make an unsafe lane change acceptable.

Source: ALEA CDL Manual — Section 13, On-road Driving; July 2017 Section 13 text; road test unchanged in ALEA's June 13, 2025 transition notice; 13.1.4; Controlled lane-change sequence; physical PDF page 154; read and reviewed September 21, 2026. Written preparation, not a practical assessment. ↗

  20. What should an expressway entrance demonstrate during the road test?

Correct answer: Traffic checks, signaling and a smooth merge into the proper lane.

The road-test guidance emphasizes a checked, signaled and smooth merge. Once in the traffic stream, maintain suitable lane position, spacing and speed while continuing traffic checks.

Alabama CDL inspection and skills preparation

60 written questions on inspection demonstrations, basic-control exercises and road-test procedures. Learn the instructions before supervised practice in your actual vehicle.

Selected practice, not a complete Alabama CDL course or an official exam.

Topics and coverage

Driving basics, air-brake, combination, tank, doubles/triples, passenger, school-bus, hazardous-materials, initial licensing, written skills preparation, selected driver responsibilities, and road conditions and emergencies are available. Additional Alabama licensing requirements, intrastate exceptions and complete endorsement and skills coverage are still needed; this is not a complete CDL course.

Prepare for the demonstration, not just the quiz

The three numbered tests partition the same 60 records. Random practice and mistake review reuse them. Our 20-question quiz format is not the official hands-on test format or scoring system. A written quiz result cannot establish that you can inspect or maneuver a vehicle safely.

Use Alabama's modernized Sections 11M and 12M for vehicle inspection and basic control. The supplement identifies September 9, 2022, with a February 9, 2024 update to Section 12M. ALEA announced the change for July 1, 2025; its notice says Road Skills remained unchanged. Road-test questions use Section 13 of the linked manual, whose section text is dated July 2017. Reviewed September 21, 2026; these are not new 2026 handbook editions.

Alabama requires wheel chocks for the vehicle-inspection test. Its basic-control supplement states that an encroachment ends the test. Follow the actual examiner's instructions, the vehicle manufacturer's procedures and safe supervised training; do not import another state's scoring assumptions.

The question set covers explaining inspections, safe access, visibility and controls, hydraulic brakes, bus equipment, selected chassis and coupling checks, all four basic-control exercise instructions, and selected road-test procedures. Detailed air-system checks and previously covered coupling topics remain in their existing question sets rather than being counted again here.

These original study scenarios are not official exam questions, a complete vehicle-specific inspection checklist, ELDT or a complete practical training course. They do not certify training, replace supervised driving or pass any official testing stage. Study the full official instructions and equipment-specific requirements with your qualified instructor.
