  1. You are nearing your exit from a roundabout. How should you communicate and complete the exit?

Correct answer: Use your right turn signal and watch for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The handbook directs using the right signal as the exit approaches and yielding to pedestrians and bicyclists when leaving.

  2. What advance signaling does the handbook specify before an ordinary turn or lane change?

Correct answer: At least 100 feet in business/residential areas or five seconds on highways/freeways.

Idaho uses a distance in business or residential areas and a five-second interval on highways or freeways. Signal before moving, not as a substitute for checking the gap.

  3. Your mirrors show a gap beside your car. What should you do before changing lanes?

Correct answer: Signal, check over your shoulder for the blind spot, and move gradually only when safe.

The procedure includes mirrors, the advance signal, a shoulder check, a safe gradual movement and canceling the signal afterward.

  4. From a single right-turn lane, how should you normally turn onto a road with two lanes in your direction?

Correct answer: Approach near the right curb and turn into the right-hand lane, yielding as required.

Do not swing wide. Watch for bicycles on the right, yield to pedestrians and other priority traffic, and enter the right-hand lane.

  5. With one left-turn lane and no contrary lane guidance, where should a left turn normally finish?

Correct answer: In the nearest lane traveling in the intended direction.

Approach in the appropriate left lane, yield and turn into the nearest lane in the desired direction without cutting the corner.

  6. Two marked lanes turn left together. What should you do through the turn?

Correct answer: Stay in your own turning lane until the turn is complete.

When parallel left-turn lanes are provided, each vehicle stays in its lane through the turn. Make any later lane change separately and safely.

  7. You want to make a U-turn near a hillcrest where approaching traffic cannot see your car within 500 feet. Is this a permitted location?

Correct answer: No; that restricted visibility makes the U-turn prohibited.

The handbook prohibits a U-turn on or near a curve or hillcrest with visibility below the stated 500-foot requirement. The absence of a sign does not make it safe or lawful.

  8. On a two-lane road posted 60 mph outside a work zone, your passenger car is not towing. You safely pass a vehicle traveling below the limit. What narrow speed exception does the handbook describe?

Correct answer: Up to 15 mph above the posted limit during the pass, returning right and reducing speed as soon as practicable.

The exception is limited to specified non-towing vehicles passing a below-limit vehicle on a two-lane road posted at least 55 mph, outside work zones. It does not excuse an unsafe pass.

  9. You are towing a small trailer behind a passenger car on a road posted 60 mph. May you use the handbook's extra-15-mph passing exception?

Correct answer: No; the exception excludes a vehicle that is towing another vehicle.

The passing-speed exception expressly requires that the passenger vehicle, pickup or motorcycle not be towing another vehicle.

    Source: Idaho Driver's Handbook, July 2026; printed/PDF p. 77 — Passing Speed Limit Exception — towing exclusion ↗

  10. You are completing a lawful pass on a two-lane road. What helps establish enough clearance before returning right?

Correct answer: See the passed vehicle in the rearview mirror, signal, and return with safe clearance.

The handbook says to wait until the overtaken vehicle is visible in the rearview mirror before moving back. Do not cut closely in front of it.

  11. Another car begins passing you on a two-lane road. How should you respond?

Correct answer: Keep right within your lane and do not speed up.

Help the other driver pass safely by providing room and maintaining speed or slowing as appropriate. Never accelerate to block the pass.

  12. A vehicle ahead signals left, but passing it on the right would require leaving the roadway. What should you do?

Correct answer: Wait; the right-passing permission does not authorize driving off the roadway.

A right pass is allowed only in the described situations and only safely without going off the roadway.
