  1. A passenger can sit on the motorcycle's proper passenger seat but cannot reach its passenger footrests. What should the rider do?

Correct answer: Do not carry that person on this setup; the passenger needs proper supported footing.

The Idaho handbook's passenger-equipment section requires passenger footrests and says the passenger must be able to reach them. Proper seating alone does not make this setup suitable.

  2. May an ordinary motorcycle rider move through a narrow gap between rows of stopped cars at an Idaho traffic light?

Correct answer: No. Lane filtering through the stopped queue is not legal in Idaho.

The July 2026 Idaho handbook expressly says lane filtering and lane splitting are not legal. Stopped traffic does not make the maneuver permissible, and doors or unexpected movement create additional risks.

Source: Idaho Motorcycle Rider's Handbook, July 2026, Lane filtering/sharing/splitting; printed and physical PDF pages 45-46. Currently linked official handbook reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  3. An Idaho resident has a valid Class D driver's license but neither a motorcycle endorsement nor a motorcycle instruction permit. Does the car license alone authorize riding an ordinary motorcycle on public roads?

Correct answer: No. The rider needs the motorcycle endorsement or the appropriate temporary motorcycle instruction permit.

The handbook requires a valid driver license with an M endorsement for ordinary licensed riding. A motorcycle instruction permit provides temporary practice authority with restrictions; a plain car license does not provide it.

  4. A person already holds a valid Idaho driver's license and wants a motorcycle instruction permit. What testing step is required before obtaining that permit?

Correct answer: Pass the motorcycle knowledge test.

The motorcycle permit requires a valid Idaho driver license and passing the motorcycle knowledge test. It is not acquired merely by showing experience with a car.

Source: Idaho Motorcycle Rider's Handbook, July 2026, Instruction permit; printed and physical PDF page 16. Currently linked official handbook reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  5. What validity period does the July 2026 Idaho motorcycle handbook give for a new motorcycle instruction permit?

    Correct answer: One year.

The current handbook gives a one-year motorcycle permit period. Older six-month guidance should not be substituted for that current period.

Source: Idaho Motorcycle Rider's Handbook, July 2026, Instruction permit; printed and physical PDF page 16. Currently linked official handbook reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  6. An Idaho motorcycle instruction-permit holder wants to practice after dark on a quiet local road. Is this allowed simply because traffic is light?

Correct answer: No. Motorcycle permit riding is limited to daylight.

Daylight-only riding is an express motorcycle instruction-permit restriction. Low traffic, age, lighting equipment or a following rider does not remove it.

Source: Idaho Motorcycle Rider's Handbook, July 2026, Instruction permit - daylight riding only; printed and physical PDF page 16. Currently linked official handbook reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  7. A motorcycle instruction-permit holder plans to use an Idaho freeway for only one exit. What restriction applies?

Correct answer: The permit does not allow freeway riding, even for a short trip.

The handbook lists no freeway riding among motorcycle instruction-permit restrictions. A short distance or careful lane choice does not remove that restriction.

Source: Idaho Motorcycle Rider's Handbook, July 2026, Instruction permit - no freeway riding; printed and physical PDF page 16. Currently linked official handbook reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  8. An experienced adult offers to ride on the back while an Idaho motorcycle permit holder practices. Does that allow the permit holder to carry the passenger?

Correct answer: No. The motorcycle permit prohibits passengers.

A passenger cannot act as an exception to the motorcycle permit's no-passenger condition. Passenger equipment and the passenger's experience do not remove the restriction.

Source: Idaho Motorcycle Rider's Handbook, July 2026, Instruction permit - no passengers; printed and physical PDF page 16. Currently linked official handbook reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  9. A 20-year-old Idaho applicant wants to add an M endorsement and says prior informal riding experience should replace a course. What does the state require?

Correct answer: Successful completion of an approved motorcycle rider training course, along with the required knowledge test.

Idaho requires the approved rider course for applicants under 21. Informal experience or adulthood at 18 does not remove that training requirement.

Source: Idaho Motorcycle Rider's Handbook, July 2026, Riding requirements - applicants under 21; printed and physical PDF page 16. Currently linked official handbook reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  10. An Idaho applicant presents a currently qualifying approved rider-course completion for a motorcycle skills-test waiver. Which test is still required?

Correct answer: The motorcycle endorsement knowledge test.

An accepted course can waive the motorcycle skills test, not the required motorcycle endorsement knowledge test.

Source: Idaho Transportation Department, Motorcycle Endorsement, Knowledge and skills test; Motorcycle Safety Foundation course. Current official guidance reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  11. A rider moving to Idaho for the first time is transferring a valid out-of-state license with a motorcycle endorsement. What motorcycle test does current ITD guidance require?

Correct answer: The Idaho motorcycle endorsement knowledge test.

ITD's transfer instructions require the motorcycle knowledge test for a valid out-of-state endorsement. This scenario is not a foreign-license transfer or an expired-credential case.

Source: Idaho Transportation Department, Motorcycle Endorsement, Motorcycle endorsement transfers. Current official guidance reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  12. An applicant passed the Idaho motorcycle knowledge and skills tests more than a year ago but never added the endorsement. Under current ITD guidance, what should the applicant expect?

Correct answer: The expired test results must be replaced by passing the applicable tests again.

Current ITD guidance gives motorcycle knowledge and skills test results a validity of up to one year. Passing tests does not leave those results usable indefinitely.

Source: Idaho Transportation Department, Motorcycle Endorsement, Knowledge and skills test - one-year test-result validity. Current official guidance reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗
