  1. A rider has only an Illinois Class L motorcycle classification. Which gasoline-powered cycle is within that classification's displacement limit?

    Correct answer: A motor-driven cycle with a 125cc engine

Class L is limited to motor-driven cycles with less than 150cc displacement. A cycle at exactly 150cc is outside that limit.

  2. An Illinois driver has Class D only and wants to ride a 500cc motorcycle on public roads without a permit. Does the car license authorize that ride?

Correct answer: No; the rider needs the appropriate motorcycle authorization

Class D does not authorize motorcycles or motor-driven cycles. A 500cc motorcycle calls for Class M authorization, or an appropriate motorcycle instruction permit used within its limits.

  3. A qualified 24-year-old is issued an Illinois motorcycle instruction permit. What is its ordinary validity period under the adult-permit statute?

    Correct answer: 12 months

Section 6-105(a)(2) specifies a 12-month motorcycle or motor-driven-cycle instruction permit for a person age 18 or older. It is not an unrestricted motorcycle license.

  4. A 30-year-old motorcycle permit holder wants to practice on a highway after dark with a fully qualified supervisor. Is supervision enough to make this permit ride lawful?

Correct answer: No; the adult motorcycle permit authorizes daylight riding only

The adult motorcycle permit combines daylight riding with direct supervision. A qualified supervisor and good lighting do not remove the daylight condition.

  5. Each proposed supervisor has the same motorcycle classification as the adult permit holder. Which person meets the statute's minimum age-and-driving-experience requirements?

Correct answer: A 21-year-old with one year of driving experience

The supervisor must be at least 21 and have at least one year of driving experience, as well as the same or greater classification. Meeting just one of those conditions is insufficient.

Source: 625 ILCS 5/6-105(a)(2); supervisor age, experience and classification ↗

  6. An adult Class M permit holder plans a daylight ride on a 500cc motorcycle. A 35-year-old friend with ten years of driving experience offers to supervise, but the friend has Class D only. Does that qualify?

Correct answer: No; the supervisor also needs the same or greater motorcycle classification

The permit rule requires a licensed motorcycle or motor-driven-cycle operator with the same or greater classification. Age and general experience alone do not make a Class D-only driver an eligible Class M supervisor.

  7. A 26-year-old with a valid Illinois driver's license has just successfully completed the IDOT Basic Rider Course and received the appropriate completion card. Which motorcycle tests does IDOT say the card waives?

Correct answer: The motorcycle written and driving tests

For riders 18 and older, IDOT says successful Basic Rider Course completion waives the Secretary of State motorcycle written and driving tests. The card does not erase other licensing requirements or itself issue a license.

Source: IDOT Rider Courses > Basic Rider Course > Licensing; 92 Ill. Administrative Code 1030.88(f)(1) road-test documentation; SOS > Motorcycle License > Requirements ↗

  8. A rider finishes the IDOT Advanced Rider Course and assumes its completion card can replace the motorcycle licensing tests. Is that assumption correct?

Correct answer: No; Advanced Rider Course completion does not waive those tests

IDOT explicitly says the Advanced Rider Course requires a valid motorcycle license and does not waive the tests for obtaining one. Do not confuse it with the qualifying basic-course route.

Source: IDOT Rider Courses > Advanced Rider Course > Eligibility and Licensing ↗

  9. A newly issued motorcycle license carries the J11 restriction after testing on a three-wheel cycle. What does J11 limit the rider to?

Correct answer: A three-wheel cycle of the appropriate license class

IDOT explains that J11 restricts the holder to a three-wheel cycle of the appropriate Class L or M. Passing on three wheels does not establish unrestricted two-wheel authorization.

Source: IDOT Rider Courses > Three Wheel Basic Rider Course > J11 Restriction ↗

  10. An adult Illinois resident has a valid car driver's license but no motorcycle classification. Which IDOT statement correctly describes Basic Rider Course enrollment?

Correct answer: A valid driver's license or permit can meet its credential requirement

IDOT's Basic Rider Course accepts otherwise eligible Illinois residents with a valid driver's license or permit. Eligibility to register for training is not permission to ride a motorcycle on public roads without the proper license or permit.

Source: IDOT Rider Courses > Basic Rider Course > Eligibility; SOS > Motorcycle License > valid proper classification ↗

  11. You complete an approved motorcycle course and receive its completion card, but your Illinois license has not yet been updated. What should you do to obtain full motorcycle licensing authorization?

Correct answer: Complete the Secretary of State licensing application requirements

A completion card supports an applicable test waiver; it is not the issued motorcycle classification. Present the required proof and finish the Secretary of State process, including applicable identification and fees.

Class L and M licensing supplement

11 questions about the application and supervised-learning process. This focused supplement is separate from our rider-safety sets and random rider practice, not a claim about official test exclusions.

Requirements differ with age, existing licenses and the test vehicle. Check the current Secretary of State application steps before applying. A practice score does not establish eligibility.
