  1. Six children were waiting, but you counted five boarding. What is the correct response?

Correct answer: Account for the missing child before moving.

Count students and know where each one is. Ask about a missing child and, if necessary, secure the bus and physically check around and underneath before moving.

  2. Everyone you first saw at the stop is seated. Why check the mirrors again before departure?

Correct answer: A late-arriving child may now be approaching the bus.

Children may run toward a bus after the original group boards. Make the final exterior checks before returning safely to traffic.

  3. When are newly boarded students ready for the bus to depart?

Correct answer: When they are seated and facing forward.

Wait until students are seated and facing forward, then complete the exterior and traffic checks. A clear stairwell alone does not mean they are safely settled.

  4. At a drop-off stop, when should students leave their seats?

Correct answer: After the driver tells them to unload.

Students stay seated until the driver releases them to unload. The driver counts them off and verifies that each has moved to a safe, visible position.

  5. A student drops a notebook close to a bus wheel. What should the student do?

Correct answer: Leave it and get the driver's attention from a safe place.

Teach students not to retrieve objects near or under the bus. They should move to safety and alert the driver so the situation can be handled with the bus secured.

  6. Why watch a student's clothing and backpack while the student steps off?

Correct answer: They can catch on the handrail or door area.

Loose straps or clothing can snag during exit. Watch each student clear the doorway and reach a safe location before departure.

  7. Before crossing in front of the bus, where should a student wait for the driver's signal?

Correct answer: At the right edge, far enough ahead for the driver to see their feet.

The handbook teaches moving at least 10 feet ahead to a visible position at the right edge of the roadway. Students check traffic and wait for the driver's signal; local crossing procedures also apply.

  8. A student has crossed in front of the bus to its left edge. What comes next?

Correct answer: Stop, check traffic and confirm it is safe to continue.

The bus can hide approaching traffic. At its left edge the student makes another traffic check and follows the driver's crossing signal before continuing.

  9. One unloading student is no longer visible and you cannot account for them. What should you do?

Correct answer: Secure the bus, take the key and check around and underneath.

Do not move until every student is accounted for. When an outside check is needed, secure the bus and take the key before leaving the driving compartment.

  10. You have driven past a student's assigned stop. What should you do?

Correct answer: Follow the authorized missed-stop procedure without backing to it.

The handbook directs drivers not to back after missing a stop. Follow local procedures to arrange a safe, authorized drop-off.

  11. On an Indiana state route outside a city or town, a proposed stop would require a student to cross the roadway. A safe alternative stop is available. What should happen?

Correct answer: Use the safe alternative that avoids requiring the crossing.

Outside city or town boundaries, the rule prohibits loading or unloading on a U.S. or state route at a location requiring a student to cross unless no other safe alternatives are available. Follow the authorized route-approval process.

  12. A public school governing body has designated an off-road special bus loading area. What does Indiana law say about the stop arm there?

Correct answer: The driver is not required to extend it while loading or unloading in that designated area.

The exemption applies to the governing body-designated off-road loading area. It is not a general waiver for unapproved roadside or parking-lot stops, and safe loading duties remain.

  13. At an approved Indiana student stop on a street that is not a U.S. or state route, where should the driver position the bus to load or unload?

Correct answer: As close to the right-hand curb or roadway edge as practicable.

For streets and highways other than U.S. or state routes, Indiana requires loading and unloading as close to the right-hand curb or edge as practicable. Other stop and warning requirements still apply.

  14. Which crossing fits the stated Indiana exception for abandoned or unused railroad tracks?

Correct answer: An INDOT-designated crossing marked with a compliant tracks out of service sign.

The abandoned-or-unused crossing exception requires both the official designation and the prescribed sign. Do not infer the exception from track appearance or a quiet warning system.

  15. An Indiana school bus carrying passengers approaches a railroad crossing where the stopping requirement applies. Where must it stop?

Correct answer: Between 15 and 50 feet from the nearest rail.

The statutory range is not less than 15 feet and not more than 50 feet from the nearest rail. The question assumes a crossing where the requirement applies, without a statutory exception or direction to proceed.

  16. Before reaching a railroad crossing on your school-bus route, what should you do?

Correct answer: Slow down and prepare the bus for the required crossing procedure.

Begin preparing before the crossing and follow Indiana and district procedures. Warning devices and a clear-looking track do not replace the required stop, observation and safe-clearance checks.

Indiana school buses: test 2

Student movement and Indiana loading rules. 16 questions with immediate explanations. Independent study, not a BMV examination or registered ELDT.

Study sources and operating limits

Indiana-specific operating questions cite the DOE July 2026 preservice statutes, not another state’s school-bus rules. Shared safety scenarios retain their actual sources and were compared with Indiana manual Section 10. The handbook chapter is general guidance; follow Indiana law, district instructions and equipment-specific training. The railroad stopping questions identify the applicable conditions and exceptions. This practice does not replace P and S qualification, ELDT, state training, drills or a practical examination.

These original DMV Practice Lab scenarios cite their actual sources: Indiana requirements for local rules and the identified handbook or federal source for shared safety topics. We compared the relevant specialist topics with the Indiana manual on September 14, 2026. The short tests and random draws use these 64 practice questions.

Independent knowledge practice, not a BMV examination, registered entry-level driver training (ELDT), medical certification or permission to operate a commercial vehicle. Complete the applicable BMV and training requirements separately. Short tests and random draws are our study formats, not verified official exam lengths or topic weighting.
