Review all 16 questions with answers
  1. An Indiana school corporation provides student bus transportation. When must it review its bus routes and safety policies under the annual-review rule?

Correct answer: On or before September 1 each year.

The annual review is due on or before September 1 and aims to improve student and adult safety. It does not replace the driver's day-to-day stop and traffic checks.

  2. Two students argue inside while other children are still unloading. What should your attention remain on first?

Correct answer: The children and traffic outside until unloading is safe.

Loading and unloading demand exterior observation. Once students are safely away, handle the behavior issue in a safely stopped and secured bus according to local procedures.

  3. A passenger's behavior prevents you from safely driving the school bus. What should you do?

Correct answer: Stop and secure the bus safely, then request authorized assistance.

Use a safe stopping location and follow the school's assistance and discipline procedures. Do not put a student out at an unauthorized location.

  4. In an emergency stop with working ABS on your school bus, what should you avoid?

Correct answer: Pumping the brake pedal.

Do not pump the brakes of an ABS-equipped bus in an emergency. Apply the braking force needed to stop safely while maintaining control.

Source: Colorado Commercial Driver License Manual (06/15/23), Section 10.6.3, physical PDF page 116. Reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  5. A school bus has working ABS, but the driver takes a curve too fast. Which risk remains?

Correct answer: The bus can still skid or lose control because ABS does not make excessive cornering speed safe.

ABS helps control brake-induced wheel lock. It does not correct excessive cornering speed, replace safe following distance or guarantee a shorter stopping distance.

  6. Strong crosswinds begin pushing your school bus sideways. What is the appropriate response?

Correct answer: Reduce speed and, if necessary, stop safely and contact dispatch.

The large side area makes the bus vulnerable to wind. Maintain a firm grip, anticipate gusts, slow down and wait in a safe place if conditions require it.

  7. As you turn away from a curb, why check the school bus's rear overhang in the mirrors?

Correct answer: Its tail can swing outward toward nearby people or objects.

A long rear overhang can sweep outward during a turn. Check before and during the movement; do not treat a handbook example as an exact clearance for every bus.

  8. Students are still outside at a stop, and the driver wants to back the bus. What does the Indiana CDL manual advise?

Correct answer: Do not back with students outside; keep them safely aboard for unavoidable backing.

The manual says never to back with students outside the bus. Avoid backing where possible; at pickup board before an unavoidable backing movement, and at drop-off back before unloading.

  9. Your authorized pickup requires unavoidable backing. In what order should you handle students?

Correct answer: Board them before backing, then watch for late arrivals.

At pickup, have all students aboard before unavoidable backing and watch for latecomers. At drop-off, complete any necessary backing before students unload.

  10. You have finished one student trip but will drive another later. When is Indiana's seat-by-seat check for remaining passengers required?

Correct answer: At the conclusion of this trip and before you exit the bus.

Visually inspect each interior seat at the conclusion of each trip that transported students or passengers, before exiting. A later trip does not postpone this check.

Source: Indiana DOE, Statutes for Preservice July 1, 2026, IC 9-21-12-19(a)-(b), physical PDF page 32. Reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  11. The route has ended and the bus seems quiet. What must the driver still do?

Correct answer: Walk through and check for sleeping or hiding students.

A physical post-trip check can find a student who is asleep or hidden from the driving position. Also check belongings, exits and visible problems and make required reports.

Source: Colorado Commercial Driver License Manual (06/15/23), Section 10.2.6, physical PDF page 112. Reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  12. During the school-bus post-trip inspection, you find a mechanical problem. What should you do with that finding?

Correct answer: Report it immediately to the responsible supervisor or maintenance personnel.

The manual requires reporting mechanical problems and special situations immediately. Follow the operator's defect and repair procedures; a post-trip finding is not something to conceal until the next service visit.

  13. An Indiana school bus is operating with passengers aboard on a bright afternoon. What does the daytime-running-light rule require?

Correct answer: Keep the daytime running lights illuminated.

Indiana requires the daytime running lights to be illuminated whenever the school bus is in operation transporting passengers. Daylight alone does not remove that requirement.

Source: Indiana DOE, Statutes for Preservice July 1, 2026, IC 9-21-12-15.5, physical PDF page 32. Reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  14. All regular seats are taken, and a school asks the Indiana bus driver to carry an additional student without a regular seat. What does the capacity rule say?

Correct answer: The governing body may not require transport of a student for whom no regular seat is available.

Indiana prohibits a governing body from requiring a driver to transport students without an available regular seat. Arrange authorized transportation instead of improvising a standing position.

Source: Indiana DOE, Statutes for Preservice July 1, 2026, IC 20-27-10-3, physical PDF page 23. Reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  15. Equipment carried for a school trip blocks the emergency-exit window while passengers are aboard. What must be corrected?

Correct answer: The obstruction must be removed so the exit is usable and not hazardous.

Indiana requires emergency exits, doors, exit windows, roof exits and service doors to remain free of obstructions that inhibit exit or make it hazardous. Carrying equipment does not waive safe access.

Source: Indiana DOE, Statutes for Preservice July 1, 2026, IC 9-21-12-18(a), physical PDF page 32. Reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  16. A student steps beyond the marked forward-area boundary near the driver while the Indiana bus is moving. Which rule applies?

Correct answer: Students may not occupy the prohibited forward area while the bus is in motion.

The statutory boundary is the vertical plane through the rear of the driver's seat, perpendicular to the bus length. Keep students out of that marked forward space while moving and handle the situation safely.

Indiana school buses: test 4

Student care, bus control and trip inspections. 16 questions with immediate explanations. Independent study, not a BMV examination or registered ELDT.

Study sources and operating limits

Indiana-specific operating questions cite the DOE July 2026 preservice statutes, not another state’s school-bus rules. Shared safety scenarios retain their actual sources and were compared with Indiana manual Section 10. The handbook chapter is general guidance; follow Indiana law, district instructions and equipment-specific training. The railroad stopping questions identify the applicable conditions and exceptions. This practice does not replace P and S qualification, ELDT, state training, drills or a practical examination.

These original DMV Practice Lab scenarios cite their actual sources: Indiana requirements for local rules and the identified handbook or federal source for shared safety topics. We compared the relevant specialist topics with the Indiana manual on September 14, 2026. The short tests and random draws use these 64 practice questions.

Independent knowledge practice, not a BMV examination, registered entry-level driver training (ELDT), medical certification or permission to operate a commercial vehicle. Complete the applicable BMV and training requirements separately. Short tests and random draws are our study formats, not verified official exam lengths or topic weighting.
