Review all 32 questions with answers
  1. Indiana describes its minimum motor-vehicle liability coverage as 25/50/25. What do those numbers represent?

Correct answer: $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, $25,000 property damage.

The minimums are $25,000 for injury or death of one person, $50,000 for injury or death of two or more people in one accident, and $25,000 for property damage in one accident. They are minimum coverage requirements, not a cap on crash losses.

  2. You borrow a car with the owner’s permission. Does that permission alone establish the financial responsibility required to operate it in Indiana?

Correct answer: No; the required coverage must apply to the vehicle or your operation.

Permission to borrow is not proof of insurance. Indiana requires financial responsibility for the vehicle being operated or applicable insurance covering the person’s operation of it. Confirm the coverage before driving.

  3. BMV mails a request to verify insurance after an incident. You had insurance at the time. What is the appropriate next step?

Correct answer: Ask your insurer to submit the required COC electronically to BMV.

Arrange for the insurance provider to file a Certificate of Compliance, or COC. Being insured does not by itself satisfy BMV’s separate request for verification.

Source: BMV proof of financial responsibility — When Does the BMV Require Proof of Insurance?; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  4. A COC is requested for a collision last month. Which coverage must it verify?

Correct answer: Coverage for that incident date and the specific vehicle involved.

A COC verifies financial responsibility for a particular past accident or citation and vehicle. Buying insurance later does not prove coverage on the incident date.

Source: BMV reinstatement and insurance forms — Certificate of Compliance (COC); reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  5. For a BMV financial-responsibility verification request, what deadline does BMV give for receiving and processing the COC?

Correct answer: 90 days from BMV’s mailing of the request.

The published deadline is 90 days from BMV’s mailing, not from when the envelope is opened. Contact the insurer promptly so submission and processing can occur within the deadline.

Source: BMV proof of financial responsibility — When Does the BMV Require Proof of Insurance?; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  6. You showed an insurance card to the officer after a crash. Later, BMV asks for proof. Has showing the card to the officer already satisfied that request?

Correct answer: No; arrange the insurer’s electronic verification for BMV.

BMV says insurance information shown to law enforcement is not transmitted to BMV or entered on the driver record for this purpose. Follow the separate verification notice.

Source: BMV proof of financial responsibility — When Does the BMV Require Proof of Insurance?; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  7. You were driving a company-owned car during your employment and need the employer-vehicle insurance affidavit. Who should complete State Form 55434?

Correct answer: The employer’s administrator who manages its vehicle insurance.

The employer or rental company’s insurance administrator completes this affidavit for qualifying company or rental use. It is not a substitute form for incidents involving an ordinary personal vehicle.

Source: BMV reinstatement and insurance forms — Affidavit — Employer or Rental Vehicle; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  8. Your driver record shows a court-ordered suspension. Who should you contact first to learn how to satisfy that court’s requirements?

Correct answer: The court that ordered the suspension.

BMV directs drivers with court-ordered suspensions to the relevant court. BMV requires documentation from that court to close its suspension; administrative insurance filings are a different matter.

Source: BMV reinstating driving privileges — Step One — Understand Your Situation; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  9. How does an SR22 differ from a COC requested for a past incident?

Correct answer: An SR22 is proof of future financial responsibility.

An SR22 is the insurer’s filing of future financial responsibility and must remain effective for the required period. A COC addresses coverage for a specified past incident and vehicle.

Source: BMV reinstatement and insurance forms — SR-22 Proof of Future Financial Responsibility; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  10. While an SR22 requirement is still in force, the insurer sends BMV an SR26. What does that filing indicate?

Correct answer: Cancellation of the SR22 insurance.

An SR26 notifies BMV of cancellation. A lapse during the required period can suspend driving privileges; it is not evidence that the requirement was completed.

Source: BMV proof of financial responsibility — Insurance Requirements — SR22 and SR26; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  11. BMV has identified your current insurance suspension as eligible for its 180-day SR22 route. What kind of coverage period is required to terminate that insurance suspension?

Correct answer: 180 consecutive days with no lapse in coverage.

The stated route requires 180 consecutive days without a lapse. This is not a universal duration for every SR22 obligation; other suspensions and court-ordered requirements must be resolved separately.

Source: BMV reinstating driving privileges — Step Two — Proof of Financial Responsibility; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  12. Your SR22 requirement is ongoing, but coverage lapses before it is satisfied. May you treat the original filing as continuing permission to drive?

Correct answer: No; a lapse can cause driving privileges to be suspended.

An original filing does not keep canceled coverage effective. BMV can suspend privileges when an effective SR22 is no longer on file during the required period. Confirm current status before driving.

Source: BMV proof of financial responsibility — Insurance Requirements — SR22 and SR26; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  13. You pay a reinstatement fee, but your record still shows an unmet SR22 requirement and suspended privileges. Does payment alone authorize driving?

Correct answer: No; the remaining requirements must also be satisfied.

BMV warns that paying fees without required SR22 coverage can leave privileges suspended. Review the requirements and status on the driver record rather than treating a receipt as a license.

Source: BMV reinstating driving privileges — Reinstatement Fee(s); reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  14. Your insurer resolves one insurance suspension, but another court-ordered suspension remains active. May you assume the insurance filing cleared both?

Correct answer: No; check and resolve the separate outstanding suspension.

A driver record can contain several outstanding requirements. Satisfying an insurance requirement is not proof that a separate court suspension has ended. Check the record and contact the relevant court.

Source: BMV reinstating driving privileges — Step One and Step Three — Review Your Record; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  15. You drive under court-granted specialized privileges with Restriction 5. What must accompany you besides the valid restricted license?

Correct answer: A copy of the court order in the vehicle.

The court order must be carried in the vehicle and produced on an officer’s request. The driver must also carry the validly issued Restriction 5 license and stay within the order’s limits.

Source: BMV endorsements and restrictions — Restriction 5 — Conditional; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  16. A court grants specialized driving privileges that continue beyond 180 days. Can the driver cancel the required SR22 merely because 180 days have passed?

Correct answer: No; SR22 must remain effective for the specialized-privileges period.

For specialized driving privileges, BMV requires an effective SR22 for the duration of those privileges. Do not confuse this obligation with a particular insurance-suspension termination route.

Source: BMV endorsements and restrictions — Restriction 5 — Conditional; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  17. For how long do Indiana violation points remain active, and from which date is that period measured?

Correct answer: Two years from the conviction date.

BMV states that points remain active for two years from conviction. The date of a traffic stop and the later conviction date may differ.

Source: BMV Driver Safety Program — Indiana Point Values Table; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  18. You receive a four-point credit for a BMV-approved Driver Safety Program, then take another approved course a month later. Does the second course stack another four-point credit?

Correct answer: No; the credit cannot be stacked within the three-year period.

The four-point credit may be applied once every three years. Another completed course can extend the credit period for three years from the new completion date, not stack a second credit.

Source: BMV Driver Safety Program — Driver Safety Program FAQs — How many points?; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  19. After you complete a BMV-approved DSP, is the citation itself removed from your driver history?

Correct answer: No; a point credit does not remove the citation.

BMV expressly distinguishes a four-point credit from removal of a citation. The course does not erase the underlying entry from driver history.

Source: BMV Driver Safety Program — Driver Safety Program FAQs — Will DSP remove a citation?; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  20. A course advertises defensive-driving tips but is not a BMV-approved DSP. Is completion enough to earn the Indiana four-point DSP credit?

Correct answer: No; the credit requires a BMV-approved DSP provider.

Provider approval matters. A course’s subject matter or a completion certificate alone does not establish eligibility for BMV’s four-point credit.

Source: BMV Driver Safety Program — Driver Safety Program FAQs — Can I use any vendor?; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  21. A court orders a driver to attend a course that is not on the BMV-approved DSP list. Does complying with that order automatically earn BMV’s four-point credit?

Correct answer: No; the BMV credit still requires an approved provider.

A court can specify a course without requiring a BMV-approved provider. Comply with the court order, but do not assume that court compliance also qualifies for the separate BMV credit.

Source: BMV Driver Safety Program — About the Driver Safety Program and provider approval; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  22. BMV sends a notice requiring completion of a Driver Safety Program. What completion window does its published requirement specify?

    Correct answer: 90 days.

BMV specifies completion within 90 days and warns of suspension for failure to complete the required course. Follow the date and instructions in the notice; enrollment alone is not completion.

Source: BMV Driver Safety Program — About the Driver Safety Program — mailed notification; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  23. An Indiana driver under 21 is convicted of two traffic offenses. Does BMV’s published DSP rule cover this situation?

Correct answer: Yes; the under-21 rule requires a DSP after two or more offenses.

BMV lists a DSP requirement for under-21 drivers convicted of two or more traffic offenses. Read and comply with the BMV notice rather than assuming age excuses the requirement.

Source: BMV Driver Safety Program — About the Driver Safety Program; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  24. A 30-year-old is convicted of two traffic offenses within 12 months. What may BMV require under its published DSP rule?

Correct answer: Completion of a BMV-approved Driver Safety Program.

The published rule allows a DSP requirement after two or more offenses within a 12-month period. The separate under-21 rule does not make adult drivers exempt.

Source: BMV Driver Safety Program — About the Driver Safety Program; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  25. A new driver completes a DSP refresher course. Does that count as the approved driver education needed for Indiana’s driver-education licensing route?

Correct answer: No; DSP does not take the place of driver education.

DSP improves defensive-driving knowledge; BMV says it does not teach a person how to drive or replace driver education. This practice quiz also does not provide DSP credit.

Source: BMV Driver Safety Program — Driver Safety Program FAQs — Does DSP replace Driver Education?; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  26. An employer asks for a certified Indiana driver record. Which BMV record option supplies a certified copy?

Correct answer: The Official Driver Record.

The Official Driver Record supplies a certified copy and certification letter. The free Viewable Driver Record is useful for checking information but is not the certified transcript requested here.

Source: BMV reinstating driving privileges — Viewable Driver Record and Official Driver Record; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  27. You want to understand why your Indiana driving privileges have not been reinstated. What should you review first?

Correct answer: The driver record’s reinstatement requirements and suspension information.

The record identifies outstanding reinstatement requirements and whether the suspension is administrative or court-ordered. The license card’s printed expiration date does not show every active suspension.

Source: BMV reinstating driving privileges — Step One — Understand Your Situation; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  28. You move to a new permanent residence within Indiana. What does BMV require for updating the residential address on your credential?

Correct answer: Visit a branch within 30 days with two approved residency documents.

A residential-address change requires a branch visit and two approved proofs within 30 days. Updating where mail is sent is not the same as amending permanent residency information.

Source: BMV amending a license or ID — Address Change — Residential Address; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  29. Your Indiana residence is unchanged, but you want BMV correspondence sent elsewhere. Can you update that separate mailing address online?

Correct answer: Yes; the mailing address may be updated through myBMV.

BMV maintains residential and mailing addresses separately. The mailing address can be changed online, while changing the residential address requires a branch visit with the prescribed documents.

Source: BMV amending a license or ID — Address Change — Mailing Address; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  30. Your legal name has changed. Before visiting BMV for the name amendment, what should you do about Social Security records?

Correct answer: Update SSA first, then wait at least one business day.

BMV directs applicants to update the Social Security Administration record first and wait at least one business day before the branch visit. Bring acceptable supporting documents.

Source: BMV amending a license or ID — Name Change; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  31. After a legal name change, how soon must you visit an Indiana BMV branch to apply for the updated license or ID?

    Correct answer: Within 30 days.

BMV requires the branch application within 30 days of the name change; the amendment cannot be completed online. The SSA update and at-least-one-business-day wait still apply.

Source: BMV amending a license or ID — Name Change; reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  32. Your plastic license has not expired, but your driver record shows suspended privileges and you have no specialized permission to drive. Does keeping the card make driving lawful?

Correct answer: No; the current suspension still prevents lawful driving.

Driving authority depends on current privileges, not merely possession of an unexpired card. Resolve the outstanding requirements and verify the status before returning to the road.
