  1. You approach a wide farm machine that slows and moves left near a field entrance. What should you consider before attempting to pass?

Correct answer: It may be positioning for a wide right turn; wait until its movement is clear and a pass is safe.

Farm machinery may take more than one lane and swing wide to turn. Do not interpret a wide approach as a safe passing invitation.

  2. You approach a horse-drawn vehicle on a rural road. How should you pass when there is a safe opening?

Correct answer: Use caution, reasonable space and speed, without sounding the horn or revving the engine.

Loud noise can frighten a horse and cause an unpredictable movement. Treat animal-drawn vehicles as legitimate road users and pass patiently.

  3. A railroad gate is lowering, but you believe there is enough time to get under it. What should you do?

Correct answer: Stop and wait; do not go through, under or around the gate.

An active crossing warning requires stopping. Judging that a train looks distant is not a safe reason to bypass the gate.

  4. Traffic is stopped just beyond railroad tracks, leaving less room than the length of your car. The crossing lights are off. What should you do?

Correct answer: Wait before the tracks until the entire car can clear them.

Do not enter unless the full vehicle can clear the crossing. A traffic queue is no place to depend on the warning system to keep you safe.

  5. A freight train has passed across a crossing with two tracks. Before moving when the warning permits, what should you check?

Correct answer: That another train is not approaching on the other track and the crossing is clear.

One train can hide another. Check every track and obey the lights and gates before proceeding.
