  1. At what minimum age may an otherwise eligible applicant apply for a Massachusetts motorcycle learner’s permit?

    Correct answer: 16 years.

The learner-permit minimum is 16. Reaching that age does not waive the other application requirements or turn a permit into a full license.

Source: M.G.L. Chapter 90, Section 8B, opening paragraph: minimum age. ↗

  2. You have a valid motorcycle learner’s permit but leave it at home. What does the permit-possession rule require while riding?

Correct answer: Keep the permit in your immediate possession.

Section 8B requires immediate possession of the permit while operating under it. Owning a valid document is not the same as having it with you.

Source: M.G.L. Chapter 90, Section 8B, permit possession provision. ↗

  3. An adult with a Massachusetts motorcycle learner’s permit wants to carry an experienced licensed rider as a passenger. Is that permitted?

Correct answer: No; a motorcycle permit does not allow a passenger.

The motorcycle-permit passenger restriction applies regardless of the passenger’s experience or the permit holder’s adult age.

Source: M.G.L. Chapter 90, Section 8B, motorcycle learner passenger restriction. ↗

  4. Sunset has passed, but streetlights make the road easy to see. May a Massachusetts motorcycle permit holder continue riding on that basis?

Correct answer: No; the permit prohibits riding after sunset.

A motorcycle learner’s permit does not authorize riding after sunset or before sunrise. Lighting conditions and adult age do not remove that restriction.

Source: M.G.L. Chapter 90, Section 8B, motorcycle learner daylight restriction. ↗

  5. Absent an earlier loss of validity, how long is a Massachusetts learner’s permit valid?

Correct answer: Two years from issue or until a license is received, whichever is first.

The statute sets two years from issue or receipt of the license, whichever occurs first. A printed permit still must be otherwise valid and not suspended.

Source: M.G.L. Chapter 90, Section 8B, permit validity paragraph. ↗

  6. An adult fails two Class M road tests. What must happen before another road test can be scheduled?

Correct answer: Successfully complete a beginner rider course.

After two Class M road-test failures, the RMV requires enrollment in and successful completion of a beginner rider course before scheduling another test.

Source: Massachusetts Driver’s Manual, revised April 2026, printed page 20 (physical PDF page 28), Taking the Road Test: Class M failures. ↗

  7. A 17-year-old wants a Massachusetts Class M license. Which rider-training requirement applies?

Correct answer: Complete the MREP basic rider course.

For applicants under 18, the MREP basic rider course is required to obtain Class M. Junior Operator eligibility and other required documents still apply.

Source: Massachusetts Driver’s Manual, revised April 2026, printed page 21 (physical PDF page 29), Massachusetts Rider Education Program continuation. ↗

  8. A 17-year-old completes the required MREP basic rider course. Which education document is also required for the Class M license?

Correct answer: A driver’s education certificate.

The RMV manual requires both the MREP basic rider course and a driver’s education certificate for someone under 18. Completing one does not remove the other.

Source: Massachusetts Driver’s Manual, revised April 2026, printed page 21 (physical PDF page 29), under-18 Class M requirements. ↗

  9. An applicant successfully completes the RMV-approved Massachusetts Rider Education Program. Which test requirement can that completion satisfy?

Correct answer: The separate RMV Class M road test.

Successful MREP completion removes the need for the separate RMV Class M road test. It does not itself make every licensing condition disappear.

Source: Massachusetts Driver’s Manual, revised April 2026, printed page 20 (physical PDF page 28), MREP road-test waiver. ↗

  10. An adult has a Class D car permit but wants to schedule a Class M motorcycle road test. What permit condition applies?

Correct answer: Have a learner’s permit for the proper motorcycle class.

To schedule a road test, the applicant needs a learner’s permit of the proper class. A car permit is not a substitute for motorcycle authorization.

Source: Massachusetts Driver’s Manual, revised April 2026, printed page 20 (physical PDF page 28), Taking the Road Test: proper-class permit. ↗

  11. An eligible adult is preparing for a Class M road test with the proper permit, application and motorcycle. Is a sponsor required for that test?

Correct answer: No; a sponsor is not required for Class M.

Unlike the Class D sponsor requirement, the manual says a Class M road test does not require a sponsor. The printed permit, application and properly equipped, legally registered motorcycle are still required.

Source: Massachusetts Driver’s Manual, revised April 2026, printed page 22 (physical PDF page 30), Class M road-test note. ↗

  12. A 17-year-old asks to take an RMV Class M road test instead of the MREP basic rider course. What does the RMV manual say?

Correct answer: Applicants under 18 must use the required MREP course.

The manual says an applicant under 18 is not eligible for the RMV Class M road test and must complete the MREP basic rider course.

Source: Massachusetts Driver’s Manual, revised April 2026, printed page 22 (physical PDF page 30), under-18 Class M road-test eligibility. ↗
