Massachusetts motorcycle study sources
Use the official RMV materials alongside practice. The explanations keep Massachusetts law separate from general riding guidance.

What the practice covers
- Massachusetts licensing, permits and equipment — 16 questions.
- Preparation, controls and braking — 16 questions.
- Traffic, surfaces and weather — 16 questions.
- Passengers, cargo and riding readiness — 16 questions.
- Helmet choices and pre-ride checks — 16 questions.
- Mechanical trouble, skids and obstacles — 16 questions.
- Massachusetts traffic and vulnerable road users — 16 questions.
- Trikes and sidecars — 20 separate questions on conventional non-leaning trikes and right-mounted sidecars.
The 132 questions are selected coverage, not the complete motorcycle manual or the official exam question set. More Massachusetts-specific procedures, pictured hazards and other riding situations still need broader coverage. Vehicle-specific instructions and hands-on rider education remain essential.
How we built this practice
- M.G.L. Chapter 90, Section 8B: permit age, possession, duration and motorcycle passenger/daylight restrictions.
- M.G.L. Chapter 90, Section 7: motorcycle helmets, eye protection and passenger seating.
- RMV Driver’s Manual, revised April 2026: Class M training and road-test notes on printed pages 20–22, plus traffic and vulnerable-road-user rules. PDF page numbers are eight higher than printed numbers in this edition.
- NHTSA Motorcycle Safety and its entry-level rider-training standards: general preparation, control, traffic search, passengers, cargo and impairment.
- NHTSA helmet guide and MSF Motorcycle Operator Manual, 18th edition: helmet fitting, pre-ride checks, mechanical problems and three-wheel handling.
Source review date: September 14, 2026. The RMV motorcycle-manual download was unavailable during our source check, so it is linked for your study but is not presented as the source of answers we could not verify there. Our local answers instead cite the accessible statute text and RMV Driver’s Manual; general answers retain their national references.
Under 18, the MREP basic rider course and driver’s education certificate are required for Class M, alongside applicable Junior Operator requirements. A permit never authorizes passengers or riding outside daylight. Check current RMV guidance before applying.
