  1. An adult has a valid car driver’s license but no motorcycle permit or endorsement. May they take an ordinary two-wheel motorcycle onto Minnesota public streets?

Correct answer: No; the car license alone does not authorize that ride.

Ordinary motorcycle operation requires the applicable motorcycle authority in addition to a valid driver’s license. An instruction permit allows practice subject to its restrictions. Autocycles and specially restricted permits have separate provisions.

Source: Minnesota Statutes 169.974, subdivision 2(a) and 2(d); Authority to ride. ↗

  2. A 17-year-old is applying for a Minnesota motorcycle endorsement. Which additional evidence is required by the motorcycle licensing statute?

Correct answer: Successful completion of an approved motorcycle safety course.

Applicants under 18 must present evidence of completing an approved motorcycle safety course, in addition to the other endorsement requirements. Course completion does not by itself grant unrestricted riding authority.

Source: Minnesota Statutes 169.974, subdivision 2(b); Under-18 endorsement training. ↗

  3. For how long is a Minnesota motorcycle instruction permit effective when issued?

    Correct answer: One year.

The motorcycle instruction permit is effective for one year. Renewal is governed by DVS rules; the permit is not a permanent endorsement.

Source: Minnesota Statutes 169.974, subdivision 2(c); Permit duration. ↗

  4. A Minnesota motorcycle permit holder wants to carry an adult friend who has years of riding experience. Is that allowed on public streets?

Correct answer: No; a permit holder may not carry a passenger.

Passenger experience and age do not remove Minnesota’s instruction-permit passenger restriction. Do not import another state’s supervised-passenger exception.

Source: Minnesota Statutes 169.974, subdivision 2(d)(1); Permit passengers. ↗

  5. A rider has only a Minnesota motorcycle instruction permit. An endorsed friend offers to accompany them after dark. What applies?

Correct answer: The permit holder still must not ride at night.

Minnesota prohibits motorcycle operation at night under an instruction permit. Accompaniment by an experienced rider does not create an exception.

Source: Minnesota Statutes 169.974, subdivision 2(d)(2); Permit night restriction. ↗

  6. A 35-year-old is practicing on a two-wheel motorcycle under a Minnesota instruction permit. What head protection is required?

Correct answer: A helmet meeting the applicable protective-headgear standards.

The instruction-permit helmet requirement applies regardless of the rider’s age. Eye protection is also required for ordinary motorcycle operators.

Source: Minnesota Statutes 169.974, subdivision 2(d)(3); Helmet for adult permit holder. ↗

  7. An endorsed adult carries a 16-year-old passenger on an ordinary two-wheel motorcycle outside any parade. What applies to the passenger?

Correct answer: The passenger must wear compliant protective headgear.

Minnesota’s under-18 helmet rule covers both operators and passengers. Reaching the footrests is a separate requirement, not a substitute for protective headgear.

Source: Minnesota Statutes 169.974, subdivision 4(a); Helmet for a young passenger. ↗

  8. An adult rides an open two-wheel motorcycle on an ordinary Minnesota road. Does a tall windshield remove the operator’s eye-protection requirement?

Correct answer: No; the operator must still wear an eye-protective device.

The statute requires an eye-protective device for the operator. A windshield is not a stated exemption; the separate exceptions concern authorized parades and enclosed-cab autocycles.

Source: Minnesota Statutes 169.974, subdivision 4(a) and 4(b); Eye protection and windshield. ↗

  9. On a bright afternoon, may a Minnesota motorcyclist switch off the headlight while riding on a public street?

Correct answer: No; the headlight must remain on while the motorcycle is operated there.

Minnesota requires the motorcycle’s headlight or headlights to be lighted whenever it is operated on a street or highway. Daylight does not remove that requirement.

Source: Minnesota Statutes 169.974, subdivision 5(l); Daytime headlight. ↗

  10. A motorcycle has a proper passenger seat, but the proposed passenger cannot reach both passenger footrests. What should the rider do?

Correct answer: Do not carry that passenger in that seating arrangement.

Passenger footrests or floorboards must be provided, and the passenger must be able to reach them with both feet. A suitable seat alone does not meet both requirements.

Source: Minnesota Statutes 169.974, subdivision 3(a) and 5(b); Passenger reach. ↗

  11. A package can be carried only by holding it against the tank with one hand while riding. Is this acceptable under Minnesota’s motorcycle cargo rule?

Correct answer: No; cargo must not prevent keeping both hands on the handlebars.

Arrange cargo so it does not interfere with using both hands on the handlebars. A low speed or light package does not remove that requirement.

Source: Minnesota Statutes 169.974, subdivision 5(d); Cargo and handlebars. ↗

  12. Two motorcyclists want to ride abreast within a single Minnesota traffic lane. What conditions does the specific two-motorcycle provision require?

Correct answer: Both drivers consent and both motorcycles fit safely within the lane.

Minnesota permits no more than two motorcycles abreast with both drivers’ consent and a safe fit. Legal permission is not a recommendation to give up maneuvering room.

Source: Minnesota Statutes 169.974, subdivision 5(e); Two motorcycles abreast. ↗
