Review all 16 questions with answers
  1. You move to Missouri with another state’s commercial learner’s permit. What does Missouri require instead of simply transferring that CLP?

Correct answer: Obtain the Missouri base license and pass the required Missouri CDL written tests for a Missouri CLP.

Missouri’s CLP FAQ says an out-of-state CLP cannot be transferred. A new resident must obtain the Missouri base license and pass the necessary written tests. The base-license transfer and Missouri CLP application may be completed on the same day when all requirements are met.

    Source: Missouri DOR, CDL/CLP FAQ; out-of-state CLP transfer and new-resident base-license questions; reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  2. TSA denies a Missouri CDL holder’s hazardous-material security approval. What does that decision alone affect?

Correct answer: It affects H or X authority; the driver must update the license, but other otherwise-valid CDL privileges are not canceled by that decision alone.

Missouri’s hazardous-material FAQ distinguishes the H/X endorsement from the rest of the CDL. A TSA denial or revocation affects hazardous-material authority, and the driver must surrender the affected document and obtain a license without that endorsement. Other independent disqualifications can still apply.

Source: Missouri DOR, Hazardous Materials FAQ; effect of TSA denial or revocation on existing CDL privileges; reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  3. An applicant asks to take Missouri’s CDL examination through a language translator. What does the state statute require?

Correct answer: CDL testing is in English; language translators are not allowed.

Section 302.720.2(1) requires CDL testing in English and does not allow language translators. Disability accommodations are addressed separately; the language rule is not a statement that all accommodations are prohibited.

Source: Missouri Revised Statutes 302.720.2(1), with disability accommodations in subsection 7; reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  4. A 76-year-old Missouri driver wants to retain an existing school-bus endorsement at renewal. Which testing requirement applies?

Correct answer: The required basic-control and road testing is biennial; the pretrip inspection portion is waived for this renewal.

Missouri requires drivers age 75 or older to meet the school-bus renewal testing requirement every two years, excluding the pretrip inspection portion. This renewal provision does not waive the initial requirements for obtaining a school-bus endorsement.

Source: Missouri Revised Statutes 302.272.1(3), effective August 28, 2025; also Missouri DOR School Bus FAQ, renewal testing at age 75 or older; reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  5. A Missouri driver renews the same CDL class without adding an endorsement. Does DOR still check the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse?

Correct answer: Yes; the check applies to CDL and CLP applications, including renewals.

Missouri checks the Clearinghouse for CDL/CLP transactions including new, renewal and duplicate applications. Keeping the same class does not exempt the transaction.

Source: Missouri DOR, Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse; licensing-transaction query requirements; reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  6. A Missouri applicant passes the required knowledge tests, but the Clearinghouse lists the driver as prohibited. Can DOR issue the CDL anyway?

Correct answer: No; passing the tests does not remove the prohibition, and DOR cannot override it.

Missouri denies the commercial licensing transaction while the Clearinghouse status is prohibited. The driver must complete the applicable return-to-duty process and meet licensing requirements; DOR cannot simply override the federal status.

Source: Missouri DOR, Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse; prohibited status, denial and return-to-duty process; reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  7. A Missouri truck stays within Missouri while carrying a local leg of a shipment that originated outside the state. Must the operation be intrastate commerce merely because this truck crosses no state line?

Correct answer: No; an in-state leg can be part of interstate commerce when it is part of a movement originating or ending outside the state.

The federal definition includes transportation between two places in one state when it is part of trade, traffic or transportation originating or terminating outside that state or the United States. A driver’s own short route is not the only factor.

Source: 49 CFR 390.5 Interstate commerce definition (3); official eCFR XML dated September 11, 2026; reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  8. A Missouri CDL has a K intrastate-only restriction. May the driver take the commercial vehicle briefly into a neighboring state and return on the same trip?

Correct answer: No; the K restriction does not authorize commercial driving outside Missouri.

Missouri’s restriction table states that K limits commercial driving to intrastate operation and prohibits commercial driving outside Missouri or in interstate commerce. A short detour or immediate return does not remove the restriction.

Source: Missouri Commercial Driver License Manual, August 2025 cover revision; Section 14, restriction K; physical PDF page 161 (printed 14-3); reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  9. Which endorsement group may appear on a Missouri commercial learner’s permit, subject to the permit’s operating restrictions?

Correct answer: Passenger, school bus and tank: P, S and N.

Missouri’s CLP FAQ permits P, S and N endorsements on a CLP, with their learner restrictions. H, X and T are not available on the learner permit. A permit endorsement is not unrestricted authority to carry passengers or cargo.

Source: Missouri DOR, CDL/CLP FAQ; endorsements allowed on a CLP; reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  10. An applicant passed the Missouri CDL written tests 14 days ago but never obtained the CLP at a license office. Does the written-test result alone satisfy the CLP holding requirement?

Correct answer: No; the applicant must obtain the actual CLP and hold it for the required period.

The DOR FAQ distinguishes the examination record from the issued CLP. Passing the written tests does not itself issue the learner permit. Obtain the CLP at a license office and hold it at least 14 days before the applicable skills test.

Source: Missouri DOR, CDL/CLP FAQ; obtaining the CLP after written testing and the 14-day holding period; reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  11. A 20-year-old Missouri CDL holder meets the other school-bus endorsement requirements. What minimum age does Missouri require for the S endorsement?

    Correct answer: 21 years.

Missouri’s school-bus endorsement statute requires the applicant to be at least 21. Eligibility for another CDL class or operation at a younger age does not remove the S-endorsement age requirement.

    Source: Missouri Revised Statutes 302.272.1(2), effective August 28, 2025; reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  12. Under Missouri’s procedure effective June 23, 2025, a CDL driver has a current medical examiner’s certificate correctly reflected on the driving record. Must the driver carry the paper MEC solely to satisfy that CDL medical-certificate carrying requirement?

Correct answer: No; in these circumstances the electronic record removes the paper-MEC carrying requirement, not the duty to stay medically qualified.

Missouri says CDL/CLP drivers with a current MEC reflected on their driving record no longer need to carry the paper MEC from June 23, 2025. Keep the medical status current and correct. This does not waive certification, license carrying, or any separate medical-variance documentation requirement.

Source: Missouri DOR, Medical Certification Requirements; electronic medical certification effective June 23, 2025; reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  13. Which statement matches Missouri’s statute for a commercial learner’s permit, rather than merely the federal maximum framework?

Correct answer: It is nonrenewable and valid for a period not exceeding one year.

Missouri Revised Statutes 302.720.1 describes the commercial instruction permit as nonrenewable and valid for no more than one year. A federal rule allowing states a limited renewal option does not mean Missouri offers that option. Follow the expiration on the actual permit and current DOR application requirements.

Source: Missouri Revised Statutes 302.720.1, commercial instruction permit term; reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  14. A third-party CDL tester shows a Missouri examiner certification that expired without renewal. Does that expired certificate establish current authority to administer the test?

Correct answer: No; Missouri’s third-party certification is valid for one year and must be current.

Section 302.720.2(2) provides for certification of third-party examiners and specifies a one-year certification period. A past certificate is not evidence of current authorization; confirm the testing provider’s current status before arranging a test.

Source: Missouri Revised Statutes 302.720.2(2), third-party examiner certification; reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  15. You pass the required Missouri CDL skills test. What remains before the license-office issuance process is complete?

Correct answer: Take the completed examination record, current license, CLP and required documents to a license office to complete issuance.

Missouri’s commercial-license instructions direct successful applicants to take the completed examination form, current driver license, CLP and required documents to a license office. A skills-test pass alone is not the issued CDL and does not excuse any remaining eligibility requirement.

Source: Missouri DOR, Commercial Drivers; steps after passing the CDL skills examination; reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  16. As reviewed September 15, 2026, what does Missouri DOR’s notice say about nondomiciled CDL/CLP issuance and the associated testing?

Correct answer: The listed new, renewal and duplicate transactions and associated testing are suspended until further notice.

DOR’s current notice says these nondomiciled CDL/CLP transactions and associated knowledge and skills testing have been suspended since September 29, 2025, until further notice. This is a dated administrative status, not a permanent eligibility rule; check the current DOR notice before making plans.

Source: Missouri DOR, Commercial Drivers; Nondomiciled CDL/CLP suspension notice effective September 29, 2025, status checked September 15, 2026; reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗
