  1. An interstate bus has a steering defect listed on its required inspection report that is likely to affect safe operation. Dispatch wants it used before repair. What is required?

Correct answer: Repair the safety-affecting defect before operating the bus.

A carrier must have a listed defect likely to affect safe operation repaired before using the vehicle again. A signature, lighter load or lower speed does not correct that defect.

  2. Before taking over a bus with a required defect report, what does the incoming driver's signature acknowledge?

Correct answer: Review of the report and certification that required repairs were performed.

The signature records the driver's review and the existence of repair certification. It is not a waiver of defects or a promise to perform repairs personally.

    Source: 49 CFR 396.13(b)–(c); eCFR displayed current through September 11, 2026; reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  3. Under the current federal inspection-report rule, no defect was discovered by or reported to a bus driver. Does that rule itself require a no-defect written report?

Correct answer: No; the federal rule does not require one in that situation.

The current rule does not require a report when no defect or deficiency is discovered or reported. That does not remove inspection duties or any separate employer or applicable local requirement.

    Source: 49 CFR 396.11(a)(2)(i); eCFR displayed current through September 11, 2026; reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  4. A bus driver is told about a safety-affecting equipment defect during the shift but did not personally discover it. How should a required daily report treat it?

Correct answer: Include the reported defect and identify the affected bus.

Report content includes safety-affecting or breakdown-related defects discovered by or reported to the driver. Identifying the correct vehicle is essential.

    Source: 49 CFR 396.11(a)(2)(i); eCFR displayed current through September 11, 2026; reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  5. The previous bus inspection report has the required repair certification. What must the new driver still establish before driving?

Correct answer: That the bus is currently in safe operating condition.

Reviewing a report does not replace the driver's duty to be satisfied that the vehicle is safe to operate now.

    Source: 49 CFR 396.13(a)–(c); eCFR displayed current through September 11, 2026; reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  6. A bus has an onboard restroom. Which interior item should be included in its safety check?

Correct answer: The restroom emergency buzzer or signaling device.

A restroom emergency signal lets a passenger call for help. Check it along with handholds, railings, floor condition and emergency-exit handles.

  7. Your bus was parked unattended between assignments. What should you do before accepting passengers?

Correct answer: Inspect the interior for damage and unsafe conditions.

Damage can occur while a bus is unattended. An interior check can reveal loose seats, damaged handholds or problems with exits before passengers rely on them.

  8. A passenger suggests leaving an emergency exit door open to cool the bus while it moves. What should you do?

Correct answer: Close the emergency exit door before driving.

The handbook directs drivers not to drive with an open emergency exit door or window. A passenger guarding it does not make it a safe ventilation method.

  9. A temporary advertisement covers the label on a bus emergency exit door. What needs correction?

Correct answer: The emergency-exit identification must be clearly visible.

Passengers need to identify emergency exits promptly. Do not obscure the emergency-exit sign with temporary material.

Source: Missouri Commercial Driver License Manual, revised August 2025; Section 4 (July 2017), 4.1.3 Bus Interior; physical PDF page 65 (printed 4-1); reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  10. Your bus has a red emergency-door light. According to the handbook, when should you use it?

Correct answer: At night and whenever the outside lights are being used.

If fitted, the red emergency-door light must work and be used at night or whenever the outside lights are in use.

Source: Missouri Commercial Driver License Manual, revised August 2025; Section 4 (July 2017), 4.1.3 Bus Interior; physical PDF page 65 (printed 4-1); reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  11. After baggage loading and restroom service, what should the driver check before pulling away?

Correct answer: That the baggage and other exterior access panels are closed.

The exterior check includes emergency exits and service access panels. Close the appropriate panels before driving rather than leaving them open after servicing.

Source: Missouri Commercial Driver License Manual, revised August 2025; Section 4 (July 2017), 4.1.2 Access Doors and Panels; physical PDF page 65 (printed 4-1); reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗

  12. A bus has a roof hatch designed to lock partly open for ventilation, and its use is permitted. What extra clearance issue must the driver consider?

Correct answer: The open hatch increases the bus's required overhead clearance.

A raised hatch increases height. Follow the vehicle's instructions, account for that clearance and do not treat open hatches as a routine practice.

Source: Missouri Commercial Driver License Manual, revised August 2025; Section 4 (July 2017), 4.1.4 Roof Hatches; physical PDF page 65 (printed 4-1); reviewed September 15, 2026. ↗
