Lane ends
What does it mean?
The number of lanes carrying traffic in your direction will decrease ahead. This pictured version shows the right lane ending, so traffic in that lane must join the continuing lane when it is safe and as traffic controls direct.
What to do when you see it
- Identify which lane ends from the symbol and any accompanying words.
- Check mirrors and your blind spot before moving into an available gap.
- Follow posted merge instructions and cooperate with nearby drivers.
How to recognize it
- Yellow diamond with two black lane boundaries.
- The right boundary bends toward the straight left boundary.
On the road
Two lanes approach a section that continues as one. If you are in the ending right lane, you signal and join a safe gap while following any posted merge directions.
Don’t confuse it with

Added lane
Added Lane shows an extra lane continuing, while Lane Ends narrows the available lanes.

Merge Sign (Merging Traffic)
Merge shows an arrow with a joining branch; the Lane Ends symbol uses tapering lane boundaries.
