Merge Sign (Merging Traffic)

What does it mean?

Traffic from another roadway will join the main stream ahead. In this example the joining roadway is on the right, and its traffic will need space to enter rather than continue in a separate added lane.

What to do when you see it

  1. Check the joining roadway and nearby vehicles.
  2. Adjust your spacing smoothly when safe.
  3. If entering, use a suitable gap and follow the yield controls and markings.

How to recognize it

  • Yellow diamond with a main upward arrow.
  • A branch from the right joins the arrow's stem.

On the road

You are driving beside a freeway entrance ramp. This symbol prompts you to watch the entering car and preserve a safe gap without an abrupt lane change.

Don’t confuse it with

Yellow diamond with two upward arrows separated by a dashed line, the right arrow curving inward.

Added lane

Added Lane keeps two separate arrows continuing side by side; Merge joins the paths.

Yellow diamond with a straight left line and a right line tapering left.

Lane ends

Merge concerns another roadway joining; Lane Ends concerns a lane ending on the same roadway.
