Pavement ends
What does it mean?
The paved roadway changes to an unpaved surface such as gravel or earth ahead. The road may continue beyond that transition; the message is about the surface rather than the end of the road.
What to do when you see it
- Reduce speed before crossing onto the different surface.
- Use smooth steering and braking as traction changes.
- Increase space if loose material or dust affects visibility.
How to recognize it
- Yellow diamond.
- Black PAVEMENT ENDS lettering.
On the road
The asphalt on a rural road gives way to gravel beyond the sign. You slow on the paved approach and continue with gentler control inputs on the loose surface.
Don’t confuse it with

Soft shoulder
Soft Shoulder applies to the area beside the travel lane, while Pavement Ends affects the road surface ahead.

Road narrows
Road Narrows describes width; Pavement Ends describes a surface change.
