Road warnings

Soft shoulder

What does it mean?

The shoulder beside the traveled roadway is soft and may not support a vehicle like the main road surface. It is a warning about the road edge, not permission to use the shoulder as a traffic lane.

What to do when you see it

  1. Keep your vehicle on the traveled roadway when safely possible.
  2. Do not use the shoulder to pass.
  3. If you need to pull off, assess the shoulder and select a safer location when available.

How to recognize it

  • Yellow diamond.
  • Black SOFT SHOULDER lettering.

On the road

A queue forms beside an unpaved shoulder after this warning. You stay in the traffic lane instead of trying to bypass the queue on the soft edge.

Don’t confuse it with

Yellow diamond reading PAVEMENT ENDS.

Pavement ends

Pavement Ends concerns the surface on the road ahead; Soft Shoulder concerns the area alongside it.

Yellow diamond with black ROAD NARROWS lettering.

Road narrows

Road Narrows warns of reduced roadway width rather than a soft supporting surface.
