  1. A non-exempt South Carolina commercial combination has a GCWR of 32,000 pounds and a towed vehicle rated at 12,000 pounds. Which CDL class covers these ratings?

    Correct answer: Class A.

The combination meets the 26,001-pound threshold and its towed vehicle exceeds 10,000 pounds GVWR, placing it in Class A. Actual cargo weight alone does not replace the stated ratings.

  2. A non-exempt commercial straight truck has a GVWR of 28,000 pounds and tows a trailer rated at 8,000 pounds. Which CDL weight class applies?

Correct answer: Class B because the heavy single vehicle tows no more than 10,000 pounds GVWR.

Class B covers a single vehicle rated at least 26,001 pounds, including one towing a vehicle rated no more than 10,000 pounds. Pulling any trailer does not automatically require Class A.

  3. A non-exempt shuttle is below the Class A and B weight thresholds and is designed for 15 passengers plus the driver. Does an empty passenger compartment remove its CDL requirement?

Correct answer: No. Its design capacity is 16 people including the driver, bringing it within Class C.

For a vehicle outside Classes A and B, the Class C passenger criterion is design capacity of 16 or more including the driver. The current head count does not erase that capacity-based requirement; passenger qualification is also needed.

  4. A non-exempt commercial vehicle is below Class A and B weight thresholds but transports hazardous material in an amount requiring placards. Which statement is correct?

Correct answer: It falls within Class C and requires the applicable hazardous-material qualification.

Placard-required hazardous-material transport can trigger Class C even below the heavy-vehicle weight thresholds. Weight alone does not settle the license and endorsement requirements.

  5. A South Carolina driver has a K intrastate-only restriction. A proposed delivery stays inside the state, but it is one leg of a shipment that began outside South Carolina. Is the local leg automatically permitted?

Correct answer: No. Staying inside the state does not make an interstate shipment intrastate.

SCDMV's K restriction permits intrastate shipments that start and finish within South Carolina. An in-state leg of an interstate shipment does not become eligible merely because this driver stays inside the border.

    Source: Code K - Intrastate Only. Reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  6. An otherwise qualified South Carolina applicant is 19. Which age-related limit applies to ordinary CDL operation?

Correct answer: The driver may qualify for intrastate operation; the minimum age for interstate driving is 21.

South Carolina lists 18 as the minimum age for intrastate driving and 21 for interstate driving. Meeting the age threshold is only one condition; the applicant still must satisfy the other licensing requirements.

  7. A first-time applicant received an original South Carolina CLP seven days ago and has finished all required training. May the applicant take the CDL skills test now?

Correct answer: No. The original CLP must be held for at least 14 days.

The original CLP has a minimum 14-day holding period before the skills test. Training completion does not shorten that separate wait.

  8. According to South Carolina's posted CDL manual, how long is a state-issued commercial learner's permit valid?

    Correct answer: One year.

The current posted manual states a one-year CLP term. A permit is not an unrestricted CDL, and renewing it requires the applicable knowledge and endorsement tests again.

  9. Who must accompany a South Carolina CLP holder during ordinary truck-driving instruction on a public road?

Correct answer: A valid CDL holder qualified for that vehicle and its endorsements, seated beside the learner to instruct.

The accompanying instructor must hold a valid CDL and the applicable endorsements for the vehicle and occupy the seat beside the learner. Remote supervision or an ordinary car license is not enough.

  10. A learner has passed a hazardous-material knowledge test but still holds only a South Carolina CLP. May an H endorsement be added to that permit?

Correct answer: No. A CLP cannot carry a hazardous-material endorsement.

SCDMV lists only S, P and N as permitted CLP endorsements and prohibits an H endorsement on a CLP. Passing a knowledge test alone does not authorize hazardous-material transport as a learner.

    Source: Licensing procedures, Commercial Learner's Permits, items 3 and 6; printed 10 / PDF page 12. Reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  11. A driver seeking a Class B CDL for the first time received the CLP after February 7, 2022, and has no applicable exemption. What training must be completed before attempting the skills test?

Correct answer: Applicable entry-level driver training through a registered training provider.

For this first-time Class B applicant, required ELDT must be completed with a registered provider before the skills test. These quizzes support study but do not replace approved training.

Source: Licensing procedures, Step-by-Step Procedures to Apply, item 3; printed 8 / PDF page 10. Reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  12. A CLP is marked with a P restriction, and its holder is practicing in a bus. May that learner carry ordinary fare-paying passengers?

Correct answer: No. The restriction allows only the specified instructional or official occupants, not ordinary passengers.

A P restriction means no ordinary passengers in the CMV bus. SCDMV limits occupants to the supervising driver, other trainees and specified auditors, inspectors or examiners; a restriction must not be confused with the P endorsement.

Source: Code P - No Passengers in CMV Bus. Reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  13. A South Carolina CDL has restriction L. What equipment may its holder not operate?

Correct answer: An air-brake-equipped commercial motor vehicle.

Restriction L prohibits operating an air-brake-equipped CMV. It is different from K (intrastate only), E (no manual transmission) and O (no tractor-trailer CMV).

    Source: Code L - No Airbrake Equipped CMV; compare Codes K, E and O. Reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  14. A South Carolina applicant takes the CDL skills test in a CMV with air-over-hydraulic brakes and receives restriction Z. What does Z limit?

Correct answer: It prohibits operating a CMV equipped with full air brakes.

Z distinguishes air-over-hydraulic testing from full-air-brake qualification. The holder may not operate a CMV equipped with full air brakes until the restriction is properly removed.

Source: Code Z - No Full Air Brake Equipped CMV. Reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  15. A South Carolina applicant tests in an automatic-transmission CMV and receives restriction E. May the driver then operate an otherwise matching manual-transmission CMV?

Correct answer: No. Restriction E must be removed before operating a manual-transmission CMV.

E means no manual-transmission-equipped CMV. Testing in an automatic does not demonstrate manual-transmission qualification, and the restriction is not removed just by the passage of time.

Source: Code E - No Manual Transmission Equipped CMV. Reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  16. In what order does South Carolina require the three CDL skills-test sections?

Correct answer: Vehicle inspection, basic control skills, then the road test.

The test progresses from inspection to basic controls to on-road driving. Each required section must be passed before proceeding; a written quiz cannot substitute for the skills assessment.

  17. An adult South Carolina CDL driver plans to haul ordinary freight across state lines, with no applicable medical exemption. Which self-certification and medical status fit this operation?

Correct answer: Non-excepted interstate; current medical certification is required.

Ordinary interstate freight work without an applicable exception belongs in the non-excepted interstate category and requires current medical certification. A CDL alone does not replace that qualification.

Source: SCDMV DL-405A, Medical Certification Requirements, Rev.03/06/2026; physical PDF page1, NON-EXCEPTED INTERSTATE (NI) category; physical page3, FAQ non-excepted interstate medical-certificate requirement. Reviewed September29,2026. ↗

  18. A South Carolina CDL holder needs new medical-examination results recorded. Which division of responsibilities matches SCDMV's current instructions?

Correct answer: The driver self-certifies as required; the medical provider submits examination results electronically through FMCSA's National Registry.

Driver self-certification and medical-provider reporting are separate duties. DL-405A requires electronic reporting through FMCSA's National Registry and says SCDMV cannot manually update medical-examiner certificates.
