  1. What is the minimum age to apply for a regular South Carolina beginner's permit?

    Correct answer: 15.

The Class D beginner's permit minimum age is 15. Applicants must also meet the testing, documentation and consent requirements that apply to them.

  2. A Class D permit holder practices at 10 a.m. Which supervisor meets the standard requirement?

Correct answer: A licensed driver at least 21 with at least one year of driving experience, in the front seat.

From 6 a.m. to midnight, the supervisor must meet the age and experience requirements and sit in the front seat.

Source: SCDMV Beginner's Permit page; Front-seat supervision; current requirements reviewed September 21, 2026 (supersede older manual where different). ↗

  3. Does the ordinary daytime supervisor rule alone authorize a permit holder to practice at 2 a.m.?

Correct answer: No; overnight practice requires a legally qualified individual in the front seat.

The current SCDMV page applies a separate qualified-individual requirement from midnight to 6 a.m. Do not assume every otherwise eligible daytime supervisor meets that requirement.

Source: SCDMV Beginner's Permit page; Overnight supervision; current requirements reviewed September 21, 2026 (supersede older manual where different). ↗

  4. A 17-year-old first-time applicant has a South Carolina beginner's permit. What minimum holding period does SCDMV list?

    Correct answer: 180 days.

The current requirement for applicants under 18 is a minimum 180-day holding period. Other licensing conditions still apply.

Source: SCDMV Beginner's Permit page; Under-18 holding period; current requirements reviewed September 21, 2026 (supersede older manual where different). ↗

  5. What minimum beginner's-permit holding period does SCDMV currently list for a first-time applicant age 18 or older?

    Correct answer: 30 days.

The current permit page lists 30 days for applicants 18 or older. This differs from the all-ages 180-day statement in the older June 2024 manual.

Source: SCDMV Beginner's Permit page; Adult holding period; current requirements reviewed September 21, 2026 (supersede older manual where different). ↗

  6. Which tests does a regular beginner's-permit applicant need to pass?

Correct answer: Vision and knowledge tests.

A beginner's-permit application includes vision and knowledge testing. Adult consent does not replace those requirements.

Source: SCDMV Beginner's Permit page; Permit testing; current requirements reviewed September 21, 2026 (supersede older manual where different). ↗

  7. An applicant under 18 is applying for a beginner's permit. What consent step is needed?

Correct answer: An authorized adult must sign as required by SCDMV.

SCDMV requires authorized-adult consent for a minor's permit or license application. The adult must fit a legally qualified category, not simply be someone the applicant knows.

  8. While driving on a public highway, a driver rests a phone on their lap to use it. Is that hands-free compliance?

Correct answer: No; supporting the device with the body is prohibited.

The mobile-device rule includes support by a body part, not just holding in a hand. A phone on the lap does not meet that rule.

Source: South Carolina Code of Laws, Section 56-5-3890(B)(1); Body-supported phone; current official text reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  9. Your phone is mounted on the dashboard. May you type a text while driving on a public highway?

Correct answer: No; mounting the phone does not permit typing texts.

The text-use prohibition is separate from the restriction on holding or supporting a phone. A mount does not authorize typing a message while driving.

Source: South Carolina Code of Laws, Section 56-5-3890(B)(2); Mounted texting; current official text reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  10. A passenger starts a video on a device you can see. May you watch it while driving?

Correct answer: No; watching motion such as a video or video call is prohibited.

The restriction covers watching a video, movie, game or video call while driving. Hands-free mounting does not make video watching permissible.

Source: South Carolina Code of Laws, Section 56-5-3890(B)(3); Watching video; current official text reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  11. Which use fits the hands-free law's navigation allowance while driving?

Correct answer: Listening to navigation without holding or body-supporting the device.

The navigation and audio allowance does not remove the no-holding or body-support restriction. Set up the route before moving so it does not distract you.

Source: South Carolina Code of Laws, Section 56-5-3890(C)(6); Audio navigation; current official text reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  12. You pull into a lawful parking space and stop before using your phone. How does the hands-free law apply?

Correct answer: It includes an exception for a driver who is lawfully parked or stopped.

South Carolina expressly excepts a driver who is lawfully parked or stopped. Choose a safe legal place rather than stopping unlawfully to use a device.

Source: South Carolina Code of Laws, Section 56-5-3890(C)(1); Lawfully parked exception; current official text reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  13. Which call fits the law's public-safety reporting exception?

Correct answer: Reporting a road hazard to a public safety official.

The exception covers reporting an accident, emergency or safety hazard to a public safety official. An ordinary personal call does not become an emergency report just because it feels urgent.

Source: South Carolina Code of Laws, Section 56-5-3890(C)(3); Emergency reporting; current official text reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  14. What statutory penalty applies to a second hands-free violation within three years, apart from applicable court fees?

Correct answer: A $200 fine and two license points.

A first violation carries a $100 fine. A subsequent violation within three years carries $200 and two points; court fees may also apply.

Source: South Carolina Code of Laws, Section 56-5-3890(D); Repeat hands-free offense; current official text reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  15. During the official knowledge test, may you use a phone or a study sheet to look up answers?

Correct answer: No; testing aids are not permitted.

The knowledge test must reflect your own knowledge. The manual prohibits aids and communication that would compromise the test.

  16. You bring a vehicle with an unsafe brake or lighting defect for your driving test. What should you expect?

Correct answer: The test can be postponed until a safe vehicle is available.

The examiner checks vehicle readiness. A vehicle that does not meet safety requirements cannot be used simply because you have an appointment.

  17. At the beginning of the road test, what should you do about your seat belt?

Correct answer: Fasten it before driving.

The manual makes failure to use the seat belt an automatic road-test failure. Make fastening it part of your pre-drive routine.

Source: South Carolina Driver's Manual, revised June 2024 (currently posted file, not a 2026 edition); Road-test seat belt; printed page 1-12, physical PDF page 17; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  18. Which documents should you carry when operating your vehicle?

Correct answer: A valid driver's license, registration and insurance information.

The manual identifies the license, vehicle registration and insurance information as documents to carry when driving.

Source: South Carolina Driver's Manual, revised June 2024 (currently posted file, not a 2026 edition); Driving documents; printed page 1-3, physical PDF page 8; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  19. A prescribed medicine appreciably impairs your ability to drive. Does having a prescription make driving in that condition lawful?

Correct answer: No; impaired driving can involve drugs as well as alcohol.

The impaired-driving prohibition includes drugs and combined effects, not just alcohol. A prescription does not make unsafe impairment acceptable.

Source: South Carolina Code of Laws, Section 56-5-2930; Medication and impairment; current official text reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  20. When backing your car, how should you use mirrors and a rear camera?

Correct answer: Supplement them with direct checks around and behind the car.

Mirrors and cameras do not show every hazard. Check around the vehicle before backing and keep directly observing your path while moving slowly.
