Review all 12 questions with answers
  1. A South Carolina resident wants a Class G moped license. What is the minimum age at which SCDMV may issue it?

    Correct answer: 15 years.

South Carolina permits a moped operator's license at age 15 or older. Reaching that age does not remove the requirement to obtain a valid license.

Source: SC Code Section 56-1-1720(A) — minimum age ↗

  2. An adult has a valid, unrestricted South Carolina Class D driver's license and a properly registered moped. Must the adult obtain a separate Class G license just to ride it?

Correct answer: No; a valid driver's license satisfies the licensing requirement.

The law accepts a valid driver's license or a valid moped operator's license. Registration and the other moped operating requirements still apply.

Source: SC Code Section 56-1-1720(A) — valid driver license alternative ↗

  3. A 15-year-old holds a valid moped license and wants to ride without a qualifying accompanying driver. When may the rider do so?

Correct answer: During daylight hours only.

The special solo-riding restriction applies to a moped-license holder younger than 16. Working lights are required but do not cancel that age-based restriction.

Source: SC Code Section 56-1-1720(B)(1) — under-16 solo riding ↗

  4. A 15-year-old Class G holder wants to ride a moped at night. Which companion meets the stated age and driving-experience requirements?

Correct answer: A licensed driver age 21 with at least one year of driving experience.

For a moped-license holder under 16, the nighttime companion must be a licensed driver age 21 or older with at least a year of experience. The companion must ride as a lawful passenger or remain within a safe viewing distance.

Source: SC Code Section 56-1-1720(B)(2) — nighttime accompaniment ↗

  5. A rider has turned 16 and holds a valid moped license. Does the moped-license age rule still require an accompanying driver for every nighttime trip?

Correct answer: No; a moped-license holder age 16 or older may ride alone at any time.

The statute permits a moped-license holder age 16 or older to ride alone at any time. This does not waive the under-21 helmet rule or any other operating requirement.

Source: SC Code Section 56-1-1720(C) — age 16 or older ↗

  6. A person's car license is suspended and the person has no valid moped license. Which statement correctly distinguishes moped-license eligibility from permission to ride?

Correct answer: The person may apply for a moped license but needs a valid license before riding.

Eligibility for a moped license is considered without regard to the status of another license or permit. Eligibility is not an issued license: obtain the required valid credential before operating a moped.

Source: SC Code Section 56-1-1730(A) — eligibility versus permission to drive ↗

  7. Which areas are included in the statutory examination for a South Carolina moped operator's license?

Correct answer: Eyesight, highway signs and traffic-law knowledge.

The moped examination includes eyesight and knowledge of highway signs and traffic laws relating to moped operation. This quiz does not establish the current number of official test questions or replace SCDMV testing.

Source: SC Code Section 56-1-1740 — applicant examination ↗

  8. A licensed rider takes a registered moped onto a public highway but leaves its registration at home. What should have been carried?

Correct answer: The valid license and moped registration.

The rider must possess a valid moped operator's license or driver's license and the moped registration while operating on a public highway. Buying or applying to register the vehicle is not the same as carrying its valid registration.

Source: SC Code Section 56-2-3000 — documents while operating ↗

  9. A resident plans to use a moped on South Carolina public roads. Does its small size make registration and a moped plate unnecessary?

Correct answer: No; the moped must be registered and have its required plate.

South Carolina requires public-road mopeds to be registered and provides a distinct moped plate. The separate title and insurance exemptions do not remove registration requirements.

Source: SC Code Section 56-2-3010(A)-(B) — registration and plate ↗

  10. A moped owner can supply the required proof of ownership for registration but does not request an optional title. Is a title universally required before the moped can be registered?

Correct answer: No; South Carolina does not require mopeds to be titled.

Moped titling is optional. Registration still requires suitable ownership documentation; requesting an optional title has its own documentation requirements.

Source: SC Code Section 56-2-3010(C) and 56-2-3050 — optional title ↗

  11. Which statement about South Carolina moped registration requirements is correct?

Correct answer: State-required moped insurance and ad valorem property tax are not prerequisites.

South Carolina exempts mopeds from required titling and insurance and from ad valorem property tax. This does not mean there are no registration charges or other fees, nor does it remove financial responsibility for harm caused.

Source: SC Code Section 56-2-3010(C)-(D) — insurance and property tax ↗

  12. A seller's document calls a vehicle a motor scooter. What determines whether SCDMV treats it as a moped or motorcycle?

Correct answer: The applicable statutory vehicle definitions.

A marketing label is not the legal classification. The law directs SCDMV to apply the motorcycle and moped definitions in Section 56-1-10 to the actual vehicle.

Source: SC Code Section 56-2-3010(E) — scooter label versus legal classification ↗
