  1. What is the minimum age to enter South Dakota's ordinary teen instruction-permit route?

    Correct answer: 14.

The ordinary teen instruction-permit route starts at 14. A permit is a supervised driving privilege, not permission to drive alone.

  2. At 3 p.m., a South Dakota teen instruction-permit holder practices in a car. Which nonparent supervisor meets the ordinary requirement?

Correct answer: A validly licensed adult at least 18 with at least one year of driving experience, seated beside the learner.

Daytime practice requires the qualified supervisor beside the learner. Being in a following vehicle or sitting elsewhere is not the stated arrangement.

  3. A teen instruction-permit holder wants to practice at 11 p.m. Who must direct the practice from the seat beside the learner?

Correct answer: The learner's parent or guardian.

From 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., the instruction-permit rule requires the parent or guardian beside the learner. The daytime nonparent-supervisor rule does not extend through the night.

Source: Current South Dakota Codified Laws §32-12-11, nighttime accompaniment. Cross-checked against current Teen Driver pamphlet effective July 1, 2025. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  4. A teen received an instruction permit in 2026 and has not completed approved driver education. What minimum continuous permit-holding period applies before the restricted minor's permit?

    Correct answer: 275 days.

For current permits, the ordinary hold is 275 continuous days. Approved driver education provides a separate 180-day route; the other requirements still apply.

Source: Current South Dakota Codified Laws §32-12-11, current instruction hold. Cross-checked against current Teen Driver pamphlet effective July 1, 2025. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  5. How does approved driver education affect the permit-holding period for a South Dakota teen with a permit issued in 2026?

Correct answer: It reduces the minimum hold to 180 continuous days.

Approved education reduces the current 275-day hold to 180 days. It does not eliminate supervised practice or the remaining licensing conditions.

Source: Current South Dakota Codified Laws §32-12-12, approved driver education. Cross-checked against current Teen Driver pamphlet effective July 1, 2025. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  6. Which supervised-practice total is required in South Dakota's current teen permit route?

Correct answer: 50 hours, including 10 in inclement weather and at least 10 at night.

The current rule includes both difficult-weather and nighttime experience within the 50-hour total. A parent or guardian must attest that the requirements were met.

  7. A restricted minor's permit holder has parental permission but no accompanying parent or guardian and no listed exception. During which period may the teen ordinarily drive alone?

    Correct answer: 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The ordinary unsupervised window is 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The nighttime rule has specific supervised and trip-purpose exceptions.

Source: Current South Dakota Codified Laws §32-12-12, time restrictions. Cross-checked against current Teen Driver pamphlet effective July 1, 2025. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  8. A restricted minor's permit holder drives directly home from a job at 11 p.m., with parental permission and no other violation. Does the nighttime restriction itself prohibit this trip?

Correct answer: No; the most direct route to or from employment is a listed exception.

The current statute permits the most direct route to, from, or in connection with employment. This does not authorize unrelated recreational detours or remove other restrictions.

Source: Current South Dakota Codified Laws §32-12-12(4), employment exception. Cross-checked against current Teen Driver pamphlet effective July 1, 2025. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  9. A teen has held a restricted minor's permit for two months. With no qualifying accompanying adult, may an unrelated friend from another household ride along?

Correct answer: No; the first six months allow only immediate-family or household passengers without the statutory adult exception.

The first-six-month passenger limit is separate from the time-of-day rule. An unrelated friend from another household does not qualify.

Source: Current South Dakota Codified Laws §32-12-12.5, first-six-month passenger limit. Cross-checked against current Teen Driver pamphlet effective July 1, 2025. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  10. After the first six months of a restricted minor's permit, and without a qualifying accompanying adult, how many passengers under 18 who are neither immediate family nor household members may ride?

Correct answer: No more than one.

After six months, the rule permits at most one under-18 passenger outside the immediate family or household. The statutory adult exception is separate.

Source: Current South Dakota Codified Laws §32-12-12.5, later passenger limit. Cross-checked against current Teen Driver pamphlet effective July 1, 2025. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  11. Which accompanying person meets South Dakota's nonparent adult exception to the restricted-permit passenger limits?

Correct answer: A household member at least 18 with at least one year of driving experience.

Besides a parent or guardian, the exception requires a passenger at least 18, with one year's driving experience, whose primary residence is the same household. Mere adulthood is not enough.

Source: Current South Dakota Codified Laws §32-12-12.5, final paragraph. Cross-checked against current Teen Driver pamphlet effective July 1, 2025. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  12. Which combination is required for a teen's ordinary operator license, along with the other applicable requirements?

Correct answer: At least age 16, at least six months with a restricted minor's permit, and no traffic convictions in the preceding six months.

Turning 16 is not sufficient by itself. The restricted-permit period and recent conviction-free period are part of the progression.

Source: Current South Dakota Codified Laws §32-12-12, operator-license progression. Cross-checked against current Teen Driver pamphlet effective July 1, 2025. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  13. A teen with a South Dakota instruction permit wants to make a routine hands-free phone call while driving. Does hands-free operation remove the permit restriction?

Correct answer: No; the instruction-permit rule prohibits any type of wireless communication device while driving.

The permit-specific restriction covers any type of wireless communication device. Do not substitute the adult driver's narrower exceptions for the permit rule.

Source: Current South Dakota Codified Laws §32-12-11, wireless-device prohibition. Cross-checked against current Teen Driver pamphlet effective July 1, 2025. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  14. A parent who signed a minor's license application later wants the driving privilege canceled. What does South Dakota law allow?

Correct answer: The signer may submit a verified written cancellation request to the Department of Public Safety.

The person who signed the minor's application may file a verified written request; the department then cancels the privilege.

Source: Current South Dakota Codified Laws §32-12-7. Cross-checked against current Teen Driver pamphlet effective July 1, 2025. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  15. An ordinary noncommercial driver becomes a South Dakota resident. Within what period does the manual say a South Dakota license must be obtained?

    Correct answer: 90 days.

The manual gives new noncommercial residents 90 days. The separate 30-day commercial deadline must not be substituted for an ordinary car driver.

  16. You need corrective lenses to meet the licensing vision standard. What should you expect when driving?

Correct answer: A requirement to wear the corrective lenses.

If corrective lenses are needed to meet the vision standard, the driving privilege carries that condition. Passing the test with glasses does not remove the need to use them.

Source: South Dakota Driver License Manual, current catalog-linked edition, REVISED 11/2024; printed/physical page 10: Vision Test. Text reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  17. What should an ordinary South Dakota driver do about proof of financial responsibility?

Correct answer: Maintain the required coverage or responsibility and carry proof when driving.

The manual requires financial responsibility and proof in the vehicle. Registration alone does not establish current coverage.

Source: South Dakota Driver License Manual, current catalog-linked edition, REVISED 11/2024; printed/physical pages 13–14: Financial Responsibility. Text reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  18. You hit an unattended parked car and cannot find the owner. Which response follows the handbook?

Correct answer: Leave your identifying and contact information and contact law enforcement.

The handbook directs an effort to find the owner, leaving the required information if unsuccessful, and contacting law enforcement. Do not treat an unattended vehicle as permission to leave anonymously.

Source: South Dakota Driver License Manual, current catalog-linked edition, REVISED 11/2024; printed/physical page 60: Exchange Information — unattended parked vehicle. Text reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  19. You are having difficulty staying alert during a long trip. What is the safer response?

Correct answer: Stop in a safe place and rest rather than continue driving tired.

Fatigue can affect vision and decision time. Temporary stimulation does not replace adequate rest or remove the need to stop driving when too tired.

Source: South Dakota Driver License Manual, current catalog-linked edition, REVISED 11/2024; printed/physical page 18: Fatigue. Text reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  20. You intend to turn right at a circular red light. No sign or officer prohibits it. What must you do first?

Correct answer: Stop completely, then yield to pedestrians and conflicting traffic before turning if safe.

South Dakota’s stated right-on-red exception requires a complete stop and yielding. Rolling through is not enough.

Can I get a South Dakota instruction permit at 14?

Yes. South Dakota's instruction permit is available at 14. It is an initial supervised-driving credential, not an unrestricted license. Teen applicants must complete the applicable examination or driver-education pathway and the permit application requirements before beginning permitted practice.

How does driver education affect a South Dakota teen's permit application?

A teen must visit a driver exam station with the required application documents. The knowledge-test requirement can be met through testing or qualifying state-approved driver education. A course-completion certificate provides the testing waiver for one year after completion; an exam-station testing appointment is otherwise needed.

How much practice is required before South Dakota's restricted minor permit?

A teen normally holds the instruction permit for 275 days, reduced to 180 with approved driver education. Required parent- or guardian-supervised practice totals 50 hours, including 10 at night and 10 in inclement weather. A parent or guardian must certify completion of the required practice.
