  1. What is the minimum age to apply for Utah's ordinary learner permit?

    Correct answer: 15.

The current DLD learner-permit page sets the minimum at 15. A learner permit authorizes supervised practice, not solo driving.

  2. A 16-year-old first-time Utah applicant has completed driver education but has held a learner permit for only three months. Is the ordinary minimum holding period complete?

Correct answer: No; a 16- or 17-year-old must hold the permit for six months.

For applicants 16 and 17, DLD specifies a six-month learner-permit hold. The adult 90-day alternative does not replace this requirement.

Source: Current Utah DLD source: 16 and 17 Years of Age — Learner Permit Holding Period. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  3. A first-time applicant turns 18 before completing the six-month permit period. Which Utah requirement applies?

Correct answer: There is no holding period at 18, but approved driver education is still required.

DLD distinguishes age 18 from both younger teens and applicants 19 or older: no minimum hold at 18, but driver education remains required.

Source: Current Utah DLD source: 18 Years of Age — holding period and driver education. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  4. A 20-year-old first-time applicant chooses not to complete approved driver education. What minimum learner-permit hold applies?

    Correct answer: 90 days.

For a first-time applicant 19 or older, DLD specifies 90 days unless approved driver education is completed. Other practice and testing requirements still apply.

Source: Current Utah DLD source: 19+ Years of Age — Learner Permit Holding Period. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  5. What supervised-practice total does Utah require for a 17-year-old first-time applicant?

Correct answer: 40 hours, including 10 after sunset.

The current age-specific DLD table requires 40 practice hours, with 10 after sunset. Nighttime experience is part of the total, not an optional substitute.

Source: Current Utah DLD source: 16 and 17 Years of Age — Practice Driving Hours Required. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  6. An 18-year-old learner practices driving a car. Which supervisor arrangement meets Utah's ordinary requirement?

Correct answer: A licensed driver at least 21 seated beside the learner.

For an 18-year-old permit holder, the supervisor must be licensed, at least 21 and in the adjacent seat. A following car does not satisfy that arrangement.

Source: Current Utah DLD source: 18 Years of Age — Required Front Seat Supervision. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  7. Under the change effective May 6, 2026, may a licensed stepparent seated beside a minor supervise ordinary learner-permit driving as a parent?

Correct answer: Yes; the parent definition includes a stepparent or foster parent.

DLD's current legislation notice says SB 22 includes a parent, stepparent or foster parent in the learner-supervision definition. The normal licensing and seating conditions still apply.

    Source: Current Utah DLD source: New Legislation 2026 — SB 22, effective May 6, 2026; handbook physical 4 and printed 6/physical 16. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  8. A 16-year-old learner's parent is not licensed. Which arrangement follows the stated alternative supervision route?

Correct answer: The parent provides evidence authorizing a licensed adult at least 21 to sit beside the learner.

The handbook and current learner page provide this alternative when the parent or guardian is not licensed. It is not a general rule allowing any friend to supervise without authorization.

Source: Current Utah DLD source: 16 and 17 Years of Age — Required Front Seat Supervision; handbook printed 6/physical 16. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  9. A licensed 16-year-old plans a recreational solo trip at 1 a.m., with no listed exception. What does Utah's nighttime rule require?

Correct answer: Do not make the trip; the ordinary restricted period is midnight to 5 a.m.

For the stated 16-year-old, midnight to 5 a.m. is restricted unless a listed exception applies. A recreational trip alone does not become exempt through ordinary parental permission.

Source: Current Utah DLD source: Nighttime Driving Restrictions; age 16 scope also handbook printed 8/physical 18. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  10. A 16-year-old has been licensed for two months. May an unrelated friend ride on a recreational trip when no licensed 21-or-older driver is beside the driver and no exception applies?

Correct answer: No; the first-six-month rule restricts non-immediate-family passengers.

DLD states the restriction lasts the first six months or until 18, with specified exceptions. This clearly under 18, newly licensed scenario does not qualify for one.

Source: Current Utah DLD source: Passenger Restrictions — first six months or until 18. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  11. You hold a Utah learner permit and are beginning a supervised drive. Where must the permit be?

Correct answer: In your immediate possession while driving.

The learner page and handbook require possession while driving. Supervision does not replace carrying the permit.

Source: Current Utah DLD source: Learner Permit in Possession While Driving; handbook printed 7/physical 17. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  12. Which Utah license class is the ordinary noncommercial car license, without assuming motorcycle authority?

    Correct answer: Class D.

DLD identifies the regular car license as Class D. Commercial vehicles and motorcycles require their own applicable qualifications.

Source: Current Utah DLD source: What is a Regular Driver License? — Class D and vehicle scope. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  13. A health condition may impair your ability to drive safely. What responsibility does the Utah handbook place on you?

Correct answer: Report it to DLD and seek evaluation and advice from a qualified health-care professional.

The handbook requires reporting a condition that may affect safe driving and obtaining competent medical evaluation. A license does not override a new safety concern.

Source: Current Utah DLD source: 2026–2027 handbook printed 20 / physical 30 — Health Conditions and Driving Safety. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  14. Your driving privilege is suspended in another state. Does moving to Utah let you obtain a regular Utah license to bypass that suspension?

Correct answer: No; DLD says the privilege cannot be suspended, revoked, disqualified or denied in another state when applying.

An interstate move is not a way around a withdrawn driving privilege. The current regular-license page expressly addresses this condition.

Source: Current Utah DLD source: Final paragraph — other-state suspended/revoked/disqualified/denied privilege. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  15. You are having difficulty staying alert during a long trip. What is the safer response?

Correct answer: Stop in a safe place and rest rather than continue driving tired.

Fatigue can affect vision and decision time. Temporary stimulation does not replace adequate rest or remove the need to stop driving when too tired.

    Source: Utah Driver Handbook, current catalog-linked 2026–2027 edition; printed 58 / physical 68: Fatigue. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  16. You intend to turn right at a circular red light. No sign or officer prohibits it. What must you do first?

Correct answer: Stop completely, then yield to pedestrians and conflicting traffic before turning if safe.

Utah permits an ordinary right turn on circular red after a complete stop unless prohibited. Yield to pedestrians and conflicting traffic before turning.

    Source: Utah Driver Handbook, current catalog-linked 2026–2027 edition; printed 46 / physical 56: Traffic Signals — red; printed 50 / physical 60, Yielding Right-of-Way. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  17. A left-turn arrow is flashing yellow while an oncoming car approaches. What is required?

Correct answer: Yield and turn only when the path is safely clear.

A flashing yellow arrow permits a yielding, unprotected turn. It is not the same as a green protected-turn arrow.

Source: Utah Driver Handbook, current catalog-linked 2026–2027 edition; printed 46 / physical 56: Flashing Yellow Arrow. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  18. You approach a flashing red traffic light. What should you do?

Correct answer: Stop completely, then proceed cautiously after yielding as required.

Flashing red requires a full stop. After stopping, use the applicable right-of-way rules and enter only when safe.

Source: Utah Driver Handbook, current catalog-linked 2026–2027 edition; printed 46 / physical 56: Flashing Red. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  19. Your approach has a flashing yellow traffic light. What is the appropriate response?

Correct answer: Slow down and proceed with caution while checking the intersection.

Flashing yellow calls for caution, not a guarantee of a clear path. It differs from flashing red’s full-stop instruction.

Source: Utah Driver Handbook, current catalog-linked 2026–2027 edition; printed 45 / physical 55: Flashing Yellow. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  20. The crossing gate is down but you cannot see a train. May you drive around it?

Correct answer: No; stay stopped until the gate is raised, lights stop flashing and the tracks are clear.

A lowered gate is not optional merely because the train is out of view. Check all tracks before proceeding after the warnings end.

    Source: Utah Driver Handbook, current catalog-linked 2026–2027 edition; printed 87 / physical 97: Gates. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

How old must I be to apply for a Utah learner permit?

Utah's minimum learner-permit age is 15. If you are younger than 18, a parent or legal guardian must sign for financial responsibility. Receiving the permit begins supervised learning; a 15-year-old must still hold it for six months and reach 16 before licensing.

Do Utah's adult learner requirements change at age 19?
