  1. The crossing gate is down but you cannot see a train. May you drive around it?

Correct answer: No; stay stopped until the gate is raised, lights stop flashing and the tracks are clear.

A lowered gate is not optional merely because the train is out of view. Check all tracks before proceeding after the warnings end.

  2. At an intersection without stop signs or signals, another car entered before you. What should you do?

Correct answer: Yield to the vehicle already in the intersection.

The vehicle that entered first has priority. Yield rather than creating a conflict inside the intersection.

  3. You and a driver on your right arrive at a four-way stop at the same time. Your paths conflict. What should you do?

Correct answer: Yield to the driver on your right.

At a simultaneous four-way stop, yield to the driver on your right. Continue watching for errors rather than forcing your way through.

  4. Another vehicle occupies the freeway gap you hoped to use. Who must adjust?

Correct answer: You must yield and find a safe gap before entering the through lane.

A signal states your intention but does not create a gap or right-of-way. Entering traffic must yield to traffic already on the freeway.

  5. An approaching motorcycle has its turn signal on, but its actual intended movement is not yet clear. Should you pull from your driveway in front of it?

Correct answer: No; wait until its actual movement and a safe gap make entry safe.

A motorcycle's signal may not cancel automatically. Do not treat it as proof the rider will leave your path; wait for a safe, confirmed opening.

  6. You want to turn left across an approaching vehicle's path at an intersection without a protected turn signal. What should you do?

Correct answer: Yield and wait for a safe gap in oncoming traffic.

A left-turning driver yields to oncoming traffic that presents a conflict. A turn signal announces intent; it does not grant priority.

  7. You are waiting at a roundabout entrance and a vehicle is circulating across your intended path. What should you do?

Correct answer: Wait for a safe gap and yield before entering.

Traffic entering a roundabout yields to vehicles already circulating and to pedestrians. Enter only when there is a safe gap.

  8. Your light turns green while another vehicle is still crossing the intersection. What should you do?

Correct answer: Allow that vehicle to clear before proceeding.

A green signal does not clear an occupied intersection. The manual requires allowing crossing traffic to clear before proceeding.

  9. Under Utah's rule effective May 6, 2026, is a turn-intention signal required solely for entering or exiting a roundabout?

Correct answer: No; the roundabout entry/exit signal requirement was removed.

HB 128 removed the requirement to signal an intention to turn when navigating a roundabout. This does not remove safe yielding duties or ordinary lane-change signaling requirements.

  10. You use a continuous-flow intersection's displaced left-turn path. After crossing opposing lanes on the first green signal, what must you do at the main intersection?

Correct answer: Obey the second signal before completing the left turn.

The handbook describes two separately controlled stages: first cross on green, then observe the far-left second signal and complete the left turn when permitted.

  11. You are driving downhill on a narrow mountain road and meet an uphill vehicle where both cannot safely pass. What does Utah's handbook direct?

Correct answer: Yield to the vehicle traveling uphill.

The mountain-driving guidance requires a downhill driver to yield to an uphill vehicle on a narrow road. Reduce speed and make room safely.

Source: Utah Driver Handbook, current catalog-linked 2026–2027 edition; printed 60 / physical 70: Mountain Driving — uphill vehicle. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗
