  1. You want to move into an adjacent marked lane. What must be established before you leave your lane?

Correct answer: That the movement can be made safely.

On marked-lane roadways, keep within one lane as nearly as practicable and determine that the movement is safe before leaving it. A signal does not replace that safety check.

Source: 23 V.S.A. § 1038(1): single-lane travel and ascertain safety before leaving lane. Vermont Statutes Online: compilation includes actions of the 2025 session; unofficial VSA copy. Read October 1, 2026; no full 2026 session-law reconciliation. ↗

  2. A two-way road has three marked lanes. The center lane is not assigned exclusively to your direction. You are not passing or preparing a left turn. May you use it as your regular through lane?

Correct answer: No; the unallocated center lane is not available for ordinary through travel in that situation.

The center lane is limited to a safely available same-direction pass, left-turn preparation, or officially designated exclusive use by traffic in your direction. None of those circumstances is present.

Source: 23 V.S.A. § 1038(2): restricted center-lane uses on a three-lane two-way roadway. Vermont Statutes Online: compilation includes actions of the 2025 session; unofficial VSA copy. Read October 1, 2026; no full 2026 session-law reconciliation. ↗

  3. Traffic is moving at the same speed as before, but the road surface and visibility have deteriorated. How should you judge your following gap?

Correct answer: Reassess whether the gap is reasonable and prudent for the changed conditions, not just the unchanged speed.

The following rule considers speed, traffic and highway conditions together. An unchanged speed does not mean that a gap remains reasonable and prudent after conditions worsen.

Source: 23 V.S.A. § 1039(a): reasonable and prudent following distance considering speed, traffic and highway conditions. Vermont Statutes Online: compilation includes actions of the 2025 session; unofficial VSA copy. Read October 1, 2026; no full 2026 session-law reconciliation. ↗

  4. Outside a business or residential district, you are following another vehicle and conditions permit a larger gap. What space must you leave for a vehicle overtaking from behind?

Correct answer: Enough for it to enter and occupy the gap without danger.

This provision applies to any following vehicle outside the named districts when conditions permit. Leave enough space for an overtaking vehicle to enter safely; it is not a rule limited to trucks.

Source: 23 V.S.A. § 1039(b): outside business or residential districts, entry space when conditions permit. Vermont Statutes Online: compilation includes actions of the 2025 session; unofficial VSA copy. Read October 1, 2026; no full 2026 session-law reconciliation. ↗

  5. You miss a turn on a divided highway. A gap in traffic would let you drive across the grass dividing strip, but there is no established crossover there. What should you do?

Correct answer: Continue to an established, permitted place to change your route.

A dividing space is not an ordinary crossing route. The statute permits established openings or crossovers unless prohibited by public authority, not an improvised shortcut across the divider.

Source: 23 V.S.A. § 1040: divider prohibition; established openings subject to public restrictions. Vermont Statutes Online: compilation includes actions of the 2025 session; unofficial VSA copy. Read October 1, 2026; no full 2026 session-law reconciliation. ↗

  6. A service track appears to connect a nearby parking area directly to a controlled-access roadway, but it is not an established public entrance. May you use it to join the roadway?

Correct answer: No; use an entrance established by public authority.

Access is limited to entrances and exits established by public authority. Physical space or an apparently safe traffic gap does not make an unofficial connection an authorized entrance.

Source: 23 V.S.A. § 1041: use only entrances and exits established by public authority. Vermont Statutes Online: compilation includes actions of the 2025 session; unofficial VSA copy. Read October 1, 2026; no full 2026 session-law reconciliation. ↗
