Review all 12 questions with answers
  1. Before driving after frost or snow, how much of the glass should you clear?

Correct answer: All windows needed for a clear view, not merely a small opening in the windshield.

The handbook says to clear snow, ice and frost from all windows. Side and rear visibility matter as well as the forward view.

  2. Before getting into a car to back out of a driveway, what is especially important?

Correct answer: Check behind the car for children and objects hidden from the driver's seat.

Small children and objects may be invisible from the seat or mirrors. Inspect the area first and keep checking while backing slowly.

  3. Where must you avoid placing a rear-facing child safety seat?

Correct answer: In front of an active passenger airbag.

The handbook warns against a rear-facing seat in front of a passenger airbag. Use a suitable rear seating position and follow the restraint and vehicle instructions.

  4. Which arrangement correctly positions an ordinary lap-and-shoulder belt?

Correct answer: Lap belt low over the hips and shoulder belt across the shoulder and chest.

The handbook places the lap belt over the hips, not the stomach, and the shoulder belt across the chest. Routing it under the arm or behind the back removes intended protection.

  5. Where should you find the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle?

Correct answer: The vehicle's tire-pressure label inside the door jamb.

The handbook directs using the vehicle's recommended PSI and checking with a tire-pressure gauge. Visual appearance alone is not an adequate pressure check.

  6. Before a trip you discover that a required brake or light is not working properly. What should you do?

Correct answer: Have the defect corrected before operating an unsafe vehicle on the highway.

Required equipment must be in good working order, and the vehicle must be mechanically safe. The driver's convenience does not remove that duty.

  7. What dimming distances apply for an approaching vehicle and one you are following, when not overtaking?

Correct answer: 500 feet approaching and 200 feet following.

Current law requires avoiding high-beam glare within 500 feet of oncoming traffic and using a lower distribution within 200 feet behind another vehicle, except during overtaking.

  8. It is daytime but raining on a highway. Must an ordinary car display its required headlights?

Correct answer: Yes; rain is an expressly listed condition requiring lights.

The law requires ordinary vehicle headlights from sunset to sunrise, during fog, smoke, rain or other unfavorable conditions, and when persons or vehicles cannot be clearly seen 500 feet ahead.

  9. May you coast an ordinary car down a long grade with the transmission in neutral?

Correct answer: No; coasting downhill in neutral is prohibited.

Keep a suitable gear engaged for control. The statute prohibits neutral coasting on a downgrade.

  10. Under the ordinary current state schedule, how often must a West Virginia-registered passenger car receive a safety inspection?

Correct answer: Once every two years.

The current statute specifies a two-year inspection interval. Separate annual federal commercial-vehicle requirements are not the ordinary private-car schedule.

  11. Where should an adjustable head restraint be positioned for protection in a rear impact?

Correct answer: Against the back of the head, not the neck.

The handbook explains that head restraints reduce whiplash risk and should fit against the back of the head.

    Source: West Virginia Driver's Licensing Handbook, Revised 07/2026 — printed p 68 (physical PDF p 78), Head Restraints. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  12. How does the handbook direct you to check tire pressure accurately?

Correct answer: Use a pressure gauge when the tires are cold and compare with the vehicle's label.

Cold-tire gauge measurements should be compared with the vehicle's recommended PSI. Tire appearance is not a substitute for a measurement.
