Review all 11 questions with answers
  1. What does this sign mean for your planned route?

Correct answer: The road is closed; use an available lawful alternate route.

ROAD CLOSED applies to traffic using that road. Do not assume that an absence of visible workers makes the closure optional.

  2. An OPEN RANGE sign appears beside a rural Idaho highway. What should you expect?

Correct answer: Livestock may roam freely and enter the road; slow and be ready to give way.

Open-range warnings identify areas where livestock may be loose and unfenced. Idaho’s manual gives livestock the right-of-way there; watch beyond the immediate pavement and leave time to react.

  3. What does this orange warning ask drivers to do?

Correct answer: Follow the shift in the roadway while staying in their lane.

Both paths bend together: the lanes shift rather than one lane ending. Follow the lane markings carefully and maintain space.

  4. A work-zone sign reads ROAD CLOSED TO THRU TRAFFIC. You are using the road only as a shortcut to a destination beyond the work zone. May you continue?

Correct answer: No; take the signed alternate route because you have no destination inside the work zone.

A local-traffic-only closure allows access to destinations inside the work zone. It does not permit a continuous trip through the zone merely because the driver lives nearby.

  5. A blue sign beside a railroad crossing lists a railroad telephone number and a unique crossing number. What is that information for?

Correct answer: Reporting an emergency or warning-device malfunction and identifying the exact crossing.

An Emergency Notification System sign helps the caller reach the railroad and identify the crossing. It is not a substitute for observing crossing controls.

  6. A bicycle warning sign has a SHARE THE ROAD plaque below it on a highway without bike lanes. What message should you take from it?

Correct answer: Expect bicycles and motor vehicles to use the highway together.

The combination warns that drivers and bicyclists share the roadway, especially where space is limited. It does not create an exclusive bicycle road or remove the need for safe passing clearance.

  7. On which side should you pass the barricade shown?

Correct answer: The left side, in the marked traffic path.

The stripes descend toward the left and indicate passage on that side. Follow the open traffic path and other work-zone controls.

  8. Which path follows the diagonal stripes on this barricade?

Correct answer: Pass on its right side, following the open traffic path.

The stripes descend toward the right. They direct drivers to pass on that side, subject to the other traffic controls.

  9. What instruction is conveyed by this V-pattern barricade and its sign?

Correct answer: The road is closed; traffic may proceed no farther.

The V-shaped closure pattern and ROAD CLOSED message mark a road that cannot be used for continuation. Follow an authorized alternate route rather than moving the barrier.

  10. A road has a daytime SPEED LIMIT 50 sign and a NIGHT 45 sign. Under otherwise ideal conditions at night, what posted maximum applies?

    Correct answer: 45 mph.

The NIGHT plaque gives the nighttime maximum in this example. Weather, visibility and traffic may still require a speed below the posted maximum.

Source: Idaho Driver's Manual, July 2026, Posted nighttime speed; printed page 45, physical PDF page 45. Current linked handbook text and relevant page illustration read September 29, 2026. ↗

  11. A sign shows SPEED LIMIT 50 and MINIMUM SPEED 30. In clear, uncongested conditions, how should you interpret the numbers?

Correct answer: 50 mph is the posted maximum and 30 mph is the posted minimum.

The labels distinguish the maximum from the minimum. Neither number excuses driving at an unsafe speed when traffic or conditions change.
