Review all 20 questions with answers
  1. A child disappears beside your stopped bus. Which area needs attention?

Correct answer: The danger zones around every side of the bus.

Children can be hidden close to the front, sides or rear. The left side also exposes them to passing traffic; a single mirror view is not a complete check.

  2. You take over a school bus from a taller driver. What should happen before you operate it?

Correct answer: Check and adjust each mirror for your own seated view.

Mirror coverage depends on the driver's position. Check all mirrors before operation and have any inadequate view corrected.

Source: Kentucky State Police, current-linked 2025 Commercial Driver's License Manual; section 10.1.2 Correct Mirror Adjustment, physical PDF page 136, printed page 10-1. Section footer July 2017; reviewed September 22, 2026. Selected safety guidance, not a complete endorsement course. Follow Kentucky and district operating requirements where they differ. ↗

  3. What should properly adjusted outside flat mirrors show on a school bus?

Correct answer: Bus sides, rear tires at ground level and traffic behind.

Flat mirrors help monitor side clearances and rear traffic. They do not remove the close-in blind spots in front of or behind the bus.

  4. A vehicle looks small in a school bus's convex mirror. What must the driver remember?

Correct answer: Its apparent size and distance can be distorted.

Convex mirrors widen the viewing area but distort apparent size and distance. Use them together with the other mirrors and direct observation.

  5. Before signaling students to board or exit in Kentucky, what must the driver confirm about visible approaching traffic?

Correct answer: It has stopped completely and is not moving again or attempting to pass.

Kentucky requires the driver to check that visible approaching traffic is fully stopped and is neither starting to move nor attempting to pass before signaling students. Warning lights alone are not proof that motorists will stop.

  6. At the designated school unloading area, how should students leave once the bus is stopped and secure?

Correct answer: In an orderly manner after the driver tells them to exit.

Wait for the stopped, secure bus and the driver's instruction. Orderly movement lets the driver observe students leaving and moving clear.

  7. At the school's loading area, you saw six children but counted five boarding. What is the correct response?

Correct answer: Account for the missing child before moving.

Count students and know where each one is. Ask about a missing child and, if necessary, secure the bus and physically check around and underneath before moving.

  8. Everyone you first saw at the stop is seated. Why check the mirrors again before departure?

Correct answer: A late-arriving child may now be approaching the bus.

Children may run toward a bus after the original group boards. Make the final exterior checks before returning safely to traffic.

  9. While students are boarding or leaving a Kentucky school bus, where must the driver be?

Correct answer: On the bus throughout loading and unloading.

Kentucky requires the driver to remain on the bus whenever students are loading or unloading. General handbook language about supervising at school does not override this state rule.

  10. Which license does Kentucky require of a school-bus driver under the cited licensing rule?

Correct answer: A current, valid CDL with the applicable endorsements and restrictions.

A current, valid CDL with the appropriate endorsements and restrictions is required. This licensing condition is separate from required school-bus training and other qualifications.

  11. After stopping a Kentucky school bus at a grade-level railroad crossing, which preparation follows the state rule?

Correct answer: Set the parking brake, select Neutral, quiet equipment and open the service door and driver window.

Kentucky requires the parking brake, Neutral, the noise-abatement switch, and the open service door and driver's window. Look carefully both ways and listen before proceeding. When safe to cross, close the service door, select the lowest gear and release the parking brake.

Page generated August 28, 2026; read September 22, 2026. Selected requirement, not a complete licensing, medical or district-operating checklist. ↗

  12. At a passive crossing where the school bus is required to stop, how should the driver respond to the absence of flashing lights and gates?

Correct answer: The driver must stop, observe carefully and decide whether it is safe to cross.

At a passive crossing there is no active warning system to make the decision for the driver. Recognize the crossing, make the required stop, check for rail traffic and ensure there is enough room to clear the tracks.

Section footer July 2017; reviewed September 22, 2026. Selected safety guidance, not a complete endorsement course. Follow Kentucky and district operating requirements where they differ. ↗

  13. If time and conditions permit, how should you secure the bus before directing an emergency evacuation?

Correct answer: Set the brake, use Park (Neutral if no Park), stop the engine and take the key.

For evacuation, secure the bus with the parking brake and Park, or Neutral if there is no Park position. Stop the engine and take the key so an unattended bus cannot be set in motion.

Section footer July 2017; reviewed September 22, 2026. Selected safety guidance, not a complete endorsement course. Follow Kentucky and district operating requirements where they differ. ↗

  14. Why teach emergency-exit procedures to all students, even when trained student helpers are assigned?

Correct answer: The assigned helpers may be absent when an emergency occurs.

Assigned helpers are useful, but every student needs basic evacuation knowledge. Planning must account for an emergency on a day when those helpers are not riding.

  15. Once students have reached the evacuation meeting place, what must the driver establish?

Correct answer: That all students are accounted for and any injuries are identified.

Keep students together at the safe meeting location, account for everyone and check their condition. Communicate with dispatch and responders rather than allowing students to wander back.

Source: Kentucky State Police, current-linked 2025 Commercial Driver's License Manual; section 10.3.2 Evacuation Procedures, physical PDF page 142, printed page 10-7. Section footer July 2017; reviewed September 22, 2026. Selected safety guidance, not a complete endorsement course. Follow Kentucky and district operating requirements where they differ. ↗

  16. A train is approaching a bus trapped on the rails. In which direction should evacuees move?

Correct answer: Away from the tracks, angled toward the approaching train.

Move well away from both the bus and the tracks. Angling toward the approaching train takes evacuees away from the direction debris may be carried after impact.

  17. Your authorized pickup requires unavoidable backing. In what order should you handle students?

Correct answer: Board them before backing, then watch for late arrivals.

For a necessary backing point, board pupils before backing and unload them after backing. Do not leave pupils outside to guide or wait beside the maneuver.

Section footer July 2017; reviewed September 22, 2026. Selected safety guidance, not a complete endorsement course. Follow Kentucky and district operating requirements where they differ. ↗

  18. A Kentucky school-bus trip is finished and the bus seems quiet. What inspection is still required?

Correct answer: Walk through and check for sleeping or hiding students.

At the completion of each bus trip, Kentucky requires an inspection to ensure no students remain. Silence or a quick look in the interior mirror cannot reliably establish that a sleeping or hidden student is absent.

Source: Kentucky Legislative Research Commission, 702 KAR 5:080 — Bus drivers' qualifications, responsibilities, and training; Section 14(2): Inspection after each bus trip. Page generated August 28, 2026; read September 22, 2026. Selected requirement, not a complete licensing, medical or district-operating checklist. ↗

  19. Students are boarding a school bus before daylight. Which boarding arrangement follows the handbook's guidance?

Correct answer: Use the dome light, and have students board in single file using the handrail.

The handbook recommends lighting the interior during dark boarding conditions and having students enter slowly, one at a time, using the handrail. These precautions support visibility and balance.

Section footer July 2017; reviewed September 22, 2026. Selected safety guidance, not a complete endorsement course. Follow Kentucky and district operating requirements where they differ. ↗

  20. A school-bus driver realizes that a student's approved drop-off stop has just been passed. What should happen next?

Correct answer: Follow the local missed-stop procedure without backing to the stop.

The handbook says not to back after missing an unloading stop and directs drivers to local procedures. Do not improvise an unauthorized drop-off or reverse toward children.

Kentucky school-bus practice

Study 60 questions about danger zones, student stops, rail crossings, emergencies and selected Kentucky school-bus requirements. Start with the first 20 below.

Selected practice, not a complete Kentucky CDL course or an official exam.

Topics and coverage

580 questions: 100 general-knowledge plus 40 each on air brakes, combination vehicles, passenger transport, doubles/triples and tank vehicles, plus 60 school-bus, 80 hazardous-materials, 80 licensing/training and 60 skills-test knowledge questions. This is not complete CDL coverage: further endorsements, licensing and practical skills need separate study.

Sources and coverage

The three numbered tests divide 60 original study scenarios without overlap. The random mix draws 20 from the same questions. Repeat attempts are not extra unique questions. No competitor or official examination question set was extracted.

Forty-eight questions use section 10 of the 2025 CDL manual currently linked by Kentucky State Police, physical PDF pages 136–146. The section footer is July 2017; the cover year does not mean every passage was revised in 2025 or 2026. Twelve questions use Kentucky regulations 702 KAR 5:080 and 702 KAR 5:030, on pages generated August 28, 2026. Sources were read September 22, 2026.

Kentucky requirements take precedence where general handbook procedures differ. For example, the driver must stay on the bus throughout loading and unloading; the state also specifies the railroad-stop procedure. Handbook questions about waiting-student distance and crossing storage space are identified as guidance, not separate statutory minimums.

This is selected school-bus knowledge, not a complete school-bus endorsement course or a substitute for required training. District procedures, individual medical eligibility, accessible transportation, preschool supervision and practical skills require further study and instruction. These quizzes do not certify an operator or reproduce the official exam.
