  1. Your light turns green, but vehicles ahead block the far side of the intersection. What should you do?

Correct answer: Wait before entering until there is room to clear it.

A green light does not make a blocked intersection safe to enter.

  2. The light changes to steady yellow while you can still stop smoothly before the stop line. What is the proper response?

Correct answer: Stop before the line.

Yellow warns that red is next. Stop when you can do so safely.

Source: Kentucky Driver Manual, July 23, 2026 — Traffic Signals — yellow light; PDF page 43 ↗

  3. You and a car to your right reach a four-way stop at the same time. Both will go straight. Who should yield?

Correct answer: You should yield to the car on your right.

When arrival is simultaneous, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right.

    Source: Kentucky Driver Manual, July 23, 2026 — Right-of-Way Rules — four-way stop; PDF page 42 ↗

  4. You are turning left without a protected arrow. An oncoming car is close and going straight. What should you do?

Correct answer: Wait for the oncoming car to pass.

An unprotected left turn yields to conflicting oncoming traffic.

    Source: Kentucky Driver Manual, July 23, 2026 — Right-of-Way Rules — left turns; PDF page 42 ↗

  5. Your mirror shows no car in the lane you want to enter. What should you do before moving over?

Correct answer: Signal and check the blind spot over your shoulder.

Mirrors do not cover every blind spot; check the space you will enter.

Source: Kentucky Driver Manual, July 23, 2026 — Changing Lanes; PDF page 54 ↗

  6. You are using a highway entrance lane and traffic is already on the highway. What is your responsibility?

Correct answer: Match traffic speed when safe and yield to find a gap.

An acceleration lane helps you enter smoothly but does not give you priority.

Source: Kentucky Driver Manual, July 23, 2026 — Merging — enter the highway; PDF page 55 ↗

  7. You park on a hill with no curb. Where should the front wheels point?

Correct answer: Toward the road edge, away from traffic.

With no curb, the wheel position should direct an unintended roll away from travel lanes.

Source: Kentucky Driver Manual, July 23, 2026 — Parking on Hills; PDF page 54 ↗

  8. You park an automatic-transmission car and are about to leave it. What secures the vehicle?

Correct answer: Set the parking brake and shift into Park.

Use the parking brake along with the correct transmission setting; switch off the engine and remove the key when leaving.

Source: Kentucky Driver Manual, July 23, 2026 — Parking; PDF page 53 ↗

  9. In favorable conditions, what following interval does Kentucky's handbook recommend as a minimum starting point?

Correct answer: Four seconds, with more space when conditions demand it.

The handbook recommends at least four seconds. Weather, visibility and other hazards can require a larger gap.

Source: Kentucky Driver Manual, July 23, 2026 — Space Ahead — four-second following rule; PDF page 59 ↗

  10. Unless a different limit is lawfully posted, what is Kentucky's statutory speed limit in a business or residential district?

    Correct answer: 35 mph.

The default is 35 mph; a posted limit and the duty to slow for conditions still apply.

    Source: KRS 189.390(2), (3)(c) — reasonable speed and business/residential default ↗

  11. You brake hard in a car with functioning ABS and feel the pedal pulse. What should you do?

Correct answer: Maintain firm brake pressure and steer as needed.

Pulsing can be normal ABS operation. Repeatedly releasing pressure interferes with its braking action.

Source: Kentucky Driver Manual, July 23, 2026 — Anti-lock Braking System; PDF page 63 ↗

  12. A tire suddenly blows out while you are driving. What is the best first response?

Correct answer: Hold the wheel firmly and ease off the accelerator.

Keep the vehicle stable and slow gradually before moving to a safe stopping place.

Source: Kentucky Driver Manual, July 23, 2026 — Emergencies — tire blowout; PDF page 65 ↗

  13. A pedestrian using a white cane is crossing your path. What should you do?

Correct answer: Yield without using the horn to hurry the pedestrian.

A white cane can identify a blind pedestrian. Yield, and avoid a horn signal that could confuse or startle them.

Source: Kentucky Driver Manual, July 23, 2026 — Pedestrians — blind pedestrians; PDF page 67 ↗

  14. You want to turn right, but a cyclist is continuing straight alongside you. What is the safe action?

Correct answer: Let the cyclist clear the conflict before turning.

Check for bicycles before turning and do not cut across their path.

Source: Kentucky Driver Manual, July 23, 2026 — Bicycles — turning; PDF page 68 ↗

  15. During a long drive, you repeatedly yawn and struggle to focus. What is the safer response?

Correct answer: Stop at a safe place and rest.

Fatigue reduces attention and reaction ability. Temporary stimulation does not replace rest.

Source: Kentucky Driver Manual, July 23, 2026 — Driver Readiness — fatigue; PDF page 30 ↗

  16. A new medicine warns that it may cause drowsiness. Before driving, what should you do?

Correct answer: Follow the warning and check with a pharmacist or clinician if unsure.

Prescription and nonprescription medicines can impair driving; check their effects and warnings.

  17. At what minimum age can a Kentucky teenager take the permit knowledge and vision tests?

    Correct answer: 15.

The current KYTC starting age is 15; other application requirements still apply.

Source: KYTC — Graduated Driver Licensing Program — Permit phase / Schedule Testing Appointment ↗

  18. A Kentucky teen's driving log totals 60 hours, but only eight were at night. What is missing?

Correct answer: Two more nighttime hours.

The minimum includes ten nighttime hours, not just sixty total hours.

Source: KYTC — Graduated Driver Licensing Program — Permit phase / Practice Driving ↗

  19. A Kentucky permit holder is 16 but has held the permit for only 100 days. Can the teen advance now?

Correct answer: No; the minimum holding period is 180 days.

Both the age and permit-holding requirements must be met.

Source: KYTC — Graduated Driver Licensing Program — Intermediate / Schedule Road Test Appointment; age 16 and 180-day requirements corroborated by KRS 186.452(1)(a)-(b), current statute id=55914 ↗

  20. A Kentucky driver turns 18 after 90 days with an intermediate license and has completed the course. What remains?

Correct answer: Wait until 180 intermediate days.

Turning 18 does not shorten the intermediate-license holding period.

How old must I be to apply for a Kentucky learner's permit?

Kentucky's current minimum permit age is 15. Applicants must pass written knowledge and vision tests before the permit is issued. A driver who gets the original permit between ages 15 and 17 follows the graduated-licensing program, with an intermediate stage before an unrestricted license.

How does a Kentucky teen receive the learner's permit after testing?

Schedule a Kentucky State Police testing appointment and bring the required documents with your parent or guardian. On the test day, present the documents at the Driver Licensing Regional Office before testing. After passing the written and vision tests, return to that office for permit issuance.
