Review all 14 questions with answers
  1. You park beside the right-hand curb on a hill. How should the front wheels differ when facing uphill versus downhill?

Correct answer: Uphill: away from the curb. Downhill: toward the curb.

With a curb, turn the wheels away when facing uphill and toward it when facing downhill, so an unintended roll meets the curb. Also secure the vehicle with the parking brake and appropriate transmission setting.

  2. You are waiting to enter a road. An approaching car has its turn signal on but has not begun turning. What should you base your decision on?

Correct answer: A safe gap and the car's actual movement, not the signal alone.

The other driver may turn beyond you or may have left the signal on accidentally. Wait until you can safely enter without depending on that driver turning.

Source: Kentucky Driver Manual, July 23, 2026 - Intersections, final paragraph on an approaching vehicle with an active turn signal; physical PDF page 51 (printed page 43). ↗

  3. After turning left from a side road onto a highway, may you use its shared two-way left-turn lane while preparing to merge into a through lane?

Correct answer: Yes; Kentucky permits this use, but you must wait for a safe opportunity to merge.

Kentucky permits use of this center lane when merging onto the highway after a left turn from a side road or entrance. This permission does not make it a passing lane or give you priority over approaching traffic.

  4. A funeral procession with headlights on is crossing the intersection behind an escort displaying flashing yellow lights. Your light turns green. No officer directs you forward. What should you do?

Correct answer: Wait and avoid driving between or interfering with the procession vehicles.

A qualifying escorted funeral procession has intersection priority, and an ordinary driver outside it must not cut between its vehicles. Emergency vehicles, trains and directions from a police or safety officer are exceptions to procession priority.

Source: KRS 189.378(1)-(5), identified funeral processions, escorted intersection priority and noninterference; physical PDF page 1. Corroborated by Kentucky Driver Manual physical PDF page 76, Funeral Processions. Current statute checked September 28, 2026. ↗

  5. You approach a stationary garbage collection truck displaying flashing amber lights while its crew works nearby. What does Kentucky's Slow Down to Get Around law require?

Correct answer: Reduce to a safe speed and proceed with due care, yielding to the truck and its workers.

For a stationary solid waste collection vehicle displaying the specified flashing lights, slow to a speed safe for the conditions and proceed cautiously. Account for workers as well as the truck.

  6. At an intersection without operating traffic signals, a pedestrian is already crossing your lane in an unmarked crosswalk. How should you respond?

Correct answer: Slow down or stop as needed to yield to the pedestrian.

A crosswalk does not need painted lines for the pedestrian-yielding duty to apply. When signals are absent or inoperative, slow or stop as needed for a pedestrian crossing in your path.

  7. You have safely stopped for a police officer, who has not yet requested your documents. What does the Kentucky handbook recommend doing with your hands?

Correct answer: Keep them on the steering wheel and wait for the officer's request.

Keep your hands visible and limit movement. When documents are requested, tell the officer where they are before reaching for them. This is handbook traffic-stop guidance.

  8. A 17-year-old with a Kentucky intermediate license plans a 1 a.m. drive solely to visit a friend. No emergency, school, work or other good cause applies. Is the trip allowed?

Correct answer: No; the midnight-to-6 a.m. restriction applies without demonstrated good cause.

An intermediate-license holder under 18 may not drive from midnight to 6 a.m. unless good cause can be demonstrated. The law includes emergency, school-related and work-related activities as examples.

Source: KRS 186.452(4), intermediate-license nighttime restriction for drivers under 18 and good-cause examples; physical PDF page 1. Current legislature text checked September 28, 2026. ↗

  9. A 17-year-old with a Kentucky intermediate license wants to take two unrelated 17-year-old friends on an ordinary social trip. No driving-instructor or agricultural exception applies. What is permitted?

Correct answer: Carry no more than one of those unrelated passengers.

For an intermediate-license holder under 18, the ordinary limit is one unrelated passenger under 20. Seat belts do not remove this separate passenger restriction.

Source: KRS 186.452(5), intermediate-license limit of one unrelated person under 20, instructor and specified agricultural exceptions; physical PDF page 1. Current legislature text checked September 28, 2026. ↗

  10. A 16-year-old intermediate-license holder is convicted of a moving violation for which Kentucky assesses points. What happens to eligibility for a full operator's license while the driver is under 18?

Correct answer: An additional minimum 180 days runs from the violation date before applying.

The listed conviction adds a minimum 180-day period measured from the violation date. Completing the original intermediate holding period alone does not satisfy this additional requirement.

Source: KRS 186.452(6), point-assessed moving conviction and additional minimum 180 days from violation before an applicant under 18 may obtain an operator license; physical PDF pages 1-2. Current legislature text checked September 28, 2026. ↗

  11. The parent who accepted responsibility for a Kentucky minor's permit submits a withdrawal form, and the Regional Office receives and enters it. What happens to the permit?

Correct answer: It is canceled until another application accepting responsibility is signed.

KYTC states that an entered withdrawal cancels the minor's permit or license until another application accepting responsibility is signed. Possessing the old card does not preserve driving permission.

Source: KYTC Graduated Driver Licensing Program - Information for Parents and Guardians / Withdrawal of Responsibility; current page checked September 28, 2026. Corroborated by Kentucky Driver Manual physical PDF page 13. ↗

  12. A Kentucky resident receives a first learner's permit at age 19 and remains 19 when applying for the road test. What minimum permit period applies?

    Correct answer: 180 days.

KYTC requires first-time drivers ages 18-20 to hold their permit for 180 days before the road skills test. Being over 18 does not put a 19-year-old into the age-21-and-older 30-day route.

Source: KYTC Licensing Steps for 18-20 Year Olds - Permit Phase / Practice Driving and Full License / Schedule Road Test Appointment; current page checked September 28, 2026. ↗

  13. An adult U.S. citizen moving to Kentucky lost the card for a still-valid out-of-state driver's license. Which special transfer requirement does KYTC list?

Correct answer: Bring a driving record or clearance letter dated within 30 days and complete vision screening.

A lost credential is handled differently from presenting a valid out-of-state card. KYTC lists a recent Driver History Record or clearance letter and vision screening when the underlying license is valid or expired less than one year.

Source: KYTC New To Kentucky - Applying for a Kentucky Credential / Out-of-State Driver's License, lost-license bullet; Driver History Record or clearance letter dated within the last 30 days and vision screening; current page checked September 28, 2026. ↗

  14. An adult wants to use a rental car for a Kentucky road test. Which rental paperwork condition does KSP require in addition to the vehicle meeting the other test requirements?

Correct answer: The agreement must name the applicant as renter and show the applicant is insured.

KSP permits a rental test vehicle when the applicant provides the rental agreement, is listed as the renter and is shown as insured. Registration, equipment and other testing requirements still apply.

Source: Kentucky State Police Driver Testing - Testing FAQs / Can I use a rental car to take my road test? Current page checked September 28, 2026; KSP renter-and-insurance wording retained rather than assuming any additional operator qualifies. ↗
