Review all 20 questions with answers
  1. Kentucky's modernized vehicle-inspection test selects one axle for demonstration. What should the applicant prepare to inspect?

Correct answer: The same required axle components on any axle selected.

The manual says the test uses one axle, but applicants should be ready to perform the listed inspection on every axle. The testing sample is not permission to ignore other axles in actual vehicle inspections.

  2. An applicant wants to use the manual's inspection checklist during the Kentucky test. Which preparation follows its rules?

Correct answer: Bring the permitted checklist without added notes or markings before the test.

The manual permits the provided checklist and checking off completed items, but prohibits additional markings or writing placed on it before the test.

  3. During the inspection test, an applicant points to a steering component and says only its name. What is missing?

Correct answer: An explanation of what is being checked on that component.

The applicant must identify the item by naming, pointing to and/or touching it, and fully explain the condition being inspected. Simply naming the part does not satisfy that demonstration.

  4. A training truck has added labels naming inspection components, beyond the manufacturer's labels. What does the manual say about using it for the vehicle-inspection test?

Correct answer: It cannot be used with those added component labels.

The manual excludes vehicles with component markings or labels added by someone other than the manufacturer. Practice aids on a training vehicle are not automatically permitted on the test vehicle.

  5. A tire has ATIS or TPMS hoses connected to its valve stem. Which test explanation matches the manual's specific note?

Correct answer: Describe the automatic pressure system and inspect that it works properly.

The chapter gives a specific alternative for connected ATIS/TPMS equipment: mention how the system monitors/adjusts pressure and inspect its operation. This is not a waiver of the tire's condition checks.

Source: Kentucky KSP current-linked 2025 CDL manual, section 11.5.2, Tires, ATIS/TPMS note; physical PDF page 153. Chapter version March 2025. Read September 22, 2026. Study guidance, not a substitute for practical training or examiner instructions. ↗

  6. The battery on a test vehicle is not visible or accessible. What does the inspection chapter instruct the applicant to do?

Correct answer: Tell the examiner and describe the required battery checks.

The applicant should tell the examiner that the battery cannot be accessed and describe what would be inspected, including secure mounting, connections, cables and the enclosure as applicable.

  7. A motor coach's suspension parts cannot be seen or reached during the test. Which response follows the manual?

Correct answer: Explain the access limitation and check whether the vehicle sits level.

For inaccessible suspension components, the chapter says to inform the examiner and inspect vehicle level from front to rear and side to side. Leaning may indicate a suspension problem.

  8. Accessible brake friction surfaces are coated with oil. Why is that a concern during inspection?

Correct answer: Contamination can reduce braking friction and create a fire hazard.

The manual calls for checking accessible linings/pads and drums/discs for contamination. Grease or oil on friction surfaces is a defect concern, not beneficial lubrication.

Source: Kentucky KSP current-linked 2025 CDL manual, section 11.5.2, Brake Contaminates; physical PDF page 154. Chapter version March 2025. Read September 22, 2026. Study guidance, not a substitute for practical training or examiner instructions. ↗

  9. Which sequence of basic-control exercises is listed in Kentucky's March 2025 chapter?

Correct answer: Forward stop, straight-line backing, forward offset tracking, reverse offset backing.

The chapter names four modernized exercises in that order. These knowledge questions explain the listed course; applicants still need practical instruction and the examiner's directions.

Source: Kentucky KSP current-linked 2025 CDL manual, section 12 introduction; physical PDF page 163. Chapter version March 2025. Read September 22, 2026. Study guidance, not a substitute for practical training or examiner instructions. ↗

  10. While backing in the test alley, the applicant drives forward to improve position. How is that movement classified?

    Correct answer: A pull-up.

Driving forward during a backing exercise to improve position or clear an encroachment is a pull-up. The allowed number and scoring depend on the particular exercise.

Source: Kentucky KSP current-linked 2025 CDL manual, section 12.1, Pull-ups; physical PDF page 163. Chapter version March 2025. Read September 22, 2026. Study guidance, not a substitute for practical training or examiner instructions. ↗

  11. During a backing exercise, an applicant stops briefly without changing direction. Is the stop itself a pull-up?

Correct answer: No; stopping without changing direction is not a pull-up.

The manual distinguishes stopping from pulling forward. A pause alone is not a pull-up, though the applicant must still comply with safety and exercise instructions.

Source: Kentucky KSP current-linked 2025 CDL manual, section 12.1, Pull-ups; physical PDF page 163. Chapter version March 2025. Read September 22, 2026. Study guidance, not a substitute for practical training or examiner instructions. ↗

  12. A low-mounted vehicle component crosses the marked test boundary although the tires remain inside. Can that count as an encroachment?

Correct answer: Yes; the rule is not limited to tire contact.

The manual generally counts any vehicle part touching or crossing the boundary, with specified mirror/upper-component exceptions. A lower component can encroach even when the wheels remain inside.

  13. What free pull-up and exit allowance is listed for straight-line backing?

Correct answer: One free pull-up and one safe exit.

The straight-line exercise has one free pull-up and permits one safe exit. Do not confuse it with the two-pull-up/two-exit allowance for reverse offset backing.

Source: Kentucky KSP current-linked 2025 CDL manual, section 12.2.2, Straight Line Backing; physical PDF page 164. Chapter version March 2025. Read September 22, 2026. Study guidance, not a substitute for practical training or examiner instructions. ↗

  14. As the applicant steers left into the opposite lane during forward offset tracking, which tire must track between the cone and line?

Correct answer: The rightmost rear tire.

The exercise uses the rightmost rear tire to judge tracking clearance while moving forward. The front of the vehicle clearing the opening does not prove the rear tire meets that requirement.

Source: Kentucky KSP current-linked 2025 CDL manual, section 12.2.3, Forward Offset Tracking; physical PDF page 164. Chapter version March 2025. Read September 22, 2026. Study guidance, not a substitute for practical training or examiner instructions. ↗

  15. During the forward offset tracking maneuver, may the applicant stop, reverse or exit to correct the path?

Correct answer: No; those corrections are not permitted during that exercise.

The chapter prohibits stopping, backing up and exiting during the forward-tracking maneuver and says a stop ends the exercise. The instructed final stop is separate from stopping mid-maneuver.

Source: Kentucky KSP current-linked 2025 CDL manual, section 12.2.3, Forward Offset Tracking; physical PDF page 165. Chapter version March 2025. Read September 22, 2026. Study guidance, not a substitute for practical training or examiner instructions. ↗

  16. In reverse offset backing, where must the specified rearmost part finish?

Correct answer: Inside the three-foot box at the rear of the alley.

The rear reference point identified by the examiner must be in the three-foot end box, subject to the stated unique-upper-part exception. The entire permitted vehicle outline must also finish within the boundaries.

  17. Traffic on an urban test-route segment is moving above the posted limit. What should the applicant do?

Correct answer: Maintain a safe speed without exceeding the posted limit.

The manual combines keeping up with traffic when appropriate with an explicit instruction not to exceed the posted speed limit. Traffic flow does not cancel that limit or safe spacing.

  18. Where does the road-test chapter direct the applicant to decelerate smoothly when leaving an expressway?

Correct answer: In the exit lane, continuing controlled deceleration on the ramp.

After traffic checks and signaling, the chapter calls for smooth deceleration in the exit lane and continued control within the ramp markings, with adequate spacing.

  19. For the stop/start maneuver, which stopped position matches the manual?

Correct answer: Parallel to the curb or shoulder, safely out of traffic without blocking access.

The vehicle must be safely out of traffic and parallel to the curb or shoulder, without blocking driveways, hydrants, intersections or signs. A test stop does not excuse unsafe placement.

  20. After the test vehicle reaches the required roadside stop, which control sequence is listed?

Correct answer: Cancel the turn signal, use four-way flashers, set the parking brake and select neutral/park.

The stop/start instructions require securing the vehicle and using the four-way flashers after the stop. The applicant then removes the feet from the brake and clutch pedals as described.

Kentucky CDL skills-test knowledge

60 questions to help you understand vehicle inspection, basic-control exercises and on-road expectations. Start with 20 questions, then review the explanation and manual reference.

Selected practice, not a complete Kentucky CDL course or an official exam.

Topics and coverage

580 questions: 100 general-knowledge plus 40 each on air brakes, combination vehicles, passenger transport, doubles/triples and tank vehicles, plus 60 school-bus, 80 hazardous-materials, 80 licensing/training and 60 skills-test knowledge questions. This is not complete CDL coverage: further endorsements, licensing and practical skills need separate study.

Understand the test before practical training

The question set covers 24 vehicle-inspection scenarios, 20 basic-control scenarios and 16 on-road scenarios. The three numbered sets divide these 60 questions without overlap; random attempts reuse the same questions. Questions about scoring exceptions do not authorize unsafe actions around real obstacles.

Sources read September 22, 2026: the CDL manual currently linked by Kentucky State Police and the agency's testing page. Manual sections 11 and 12 use the modernized test chapters dated March 2025; section 13 carries a July 2017 chapter date. The manual's 2025 filename does not mean every chapter was revised that year.
