  1. A bus leans toward the outside of a banked curve. What does this indicate?

Correct answer: Its speed is too high for that curve

The manual treats outward lean on a banked curve as a sign of excessive speed. A curve speed suitable for a car may still cause a bus to slide or roll.

  2. Your bus is making a short trip between closely spaced city stops. How should you use the driver's safety belt?

Correct answer: Wear it while driving

The passenger chapter instructs the driver to use the safety belt while driving. Short distances and frequent stops do not change that instruction.

  3. A New York passenger bus must stop for a railroad crossing. Where should the stop be made relative to the nearest rail?

Correct answer: Between 15 and 50 feet from the nearest rail

New York's required railroad stop is 15 to 50 feet from the nearest rail. Then look and listen, and proceed only when safe. The law has specified exceptions; this question assumes the stop is required.

  4. A bus approaches a drawbridge with no traffic-control attendant or signal light. What should the driver do?

Correct answer: Stop at least 50 feet before the draw and confirm it is fully closed

The manual requires a stop at least 50 feet from the draw in this situation. An attendant or a green control signal changes the stated procedure, so the question specifies neither is present.

  5. A transit bus's brake-door interlock holds the brakes while its rear door is open. May you rely on it instead of the parking brake?

Correct answer: No; the interlock is not a substitute for the parking brake

The interlock applies the brakes and holds the engine at idle with the rear door open. It does not replace the parking brake.

  6. At the end of a bus shift, why should you recheck the passenger compartment's safety equipment?

Correct answer: It may have been damaged during passenger service

Riders may damage safety-related equipment during a trip. An end-of-shift inspection finds problems that need reporting and correction before the bus returns to service.

  7. For an interstate bus operation subject to 49 CFR 396.11, does that federal rule require a written report when no defect was discovered or reported?

Correct answer: No; the federal rule does not require a no-defect report

The current federal rule does not require a no-defect report. Applicable defect reports and safe-operation checks remain required. Separate state or employer requirements may be stricter, and section 396.11 also exempts certain operations.

  8. A passenger bus needs fuel while parked inside a closed building. May it be refueled with riders aboard?

Correct answer: No; the riders must not remain aboard for refueling there

Do not refuel a bus inside a closed building with passengers aboard. The manual also says to avoid refueling with passengers aboard generally unless absolutely necessary. Separate school-bus rules can be stricter.

  9. Passengers cannot safely leave a disabled bus at its present location. If it must be towed with them aboard, how far may that emergency move continue?

Correct answer: Only to the nearest safe place to unload them

The manual permits the exceptional occupied tow only when getting off is unsafe. It limits the move to the nearest safe discharge point, not continued passenger service.

  10. At an intermediate stop with several similar coaches, what information should you announce to help riders return to the correct bus?

Correct answer: The location, reason for the stop, next departure time and bus number

The passenger chapter directs the driver to announce those details at a destination or intermediate stop. Riders need to know where they are, what the stop is for, when to return and which bus to board.
