Review all 20 questions with answers
  1. A 30-year-old Ohio resident has only a noncommercial learner's permit and wants a commercial learner's permit. Which credential must the applicant obtain first?

Correct answer: A valid Ohio driver license.

An Ohio commercial permit applicant must already hold a valid Ohio driver license; a noncommercial learner's permit is not enough. ORC 4506.06(A) also excludes a restricted license from this prerequisite.

Source: ORC 4506.06(A), first sentence, age and existing-driver-license prerequisites; effective October 3, 2023. ↗

  2. A 17-year-old already has a valid Ohio driver license and wants an ordinary commercial learner's permit. What is the earliest age at which the applicant can meet the CLP age requirement?

    Correct answer: 18 years.

Ohio sets the minimum CLP age at 18. Meeting that age alone does not waive the other permit requirements or grant interstate commercial-driving authority.

Source: ORC 4506.06(A), first sentence, minimum age of eighteen; effective October 3, 2023. ↗

  3. According to Ohio BMV's current commercial-permit instructions, how long is a CLP valid?

    Correct answer: 12 months.

Ohio BMV states that a CLP is valid for 12 months. The permit's expiration still matters; passing part of a test does not automatically extend its term.

Source: CDL Application Eligibility > Commercial Learner Permits (CLP), permit-validity bullet; reviewed September 12, 2026. ↗

  4. An applicant's initial Ohio CLP was issued nine days ago. All other skills-test prerequisites are satisfied. What minimum elapsed time from initial issuance must the applicant reach before taking the skills test?

    Correct answer: 14 days.

At least 14 days must have elapsed since initial CLP issuance before an applicant is eligible to take the CDL skills test. Finishing training early does not shorten that hold.

Source: ORC 4506.09(E)(2), first sentence, minimum fourteen-day CLP hold before skills testing; effective June 30, 2025. ↗

  5. An Ohio CLP holder will practice in a Class A freight-truck combination that requires no special endorsement. The accompanying instructor will sit beside and directly supervise the applicant. Which license must that instructor hold?

Correct answer: A valid Class A CDL.

The supervising driver must hold a valid CDL appropriate for the vehicle and any required endorsements. A lower CDL class or lengthy noncommercial driving experience cannot substitute for Class A authority here.

Source: ORC 4506.06(B)(1)–(3), accompanying driver's license, seating and direct-supervision requirements; effective October 3, 2023. ↗

  6. A first-time Class B applicant has no ELDT exemption. Under Ohio BMV's application instructions, when must proof of the required entry-level driver training be available?

Correct answer: Before scheduling or attempting the skills test.

Ohio BMV requires electronic proof of the appropriate ELDT completion, or proof of an exemption, before scheduling or attempting skills testing. This is not a claim that ELDT must precede every general-knowledge test.

Source: CDL Application Eligibility > First-Time Applicants, electronic ELDT proof or exemption bullet preceding skills-test scheduling; reviewed September 12, 2026. ↗

  7. A CDL holder seeks an H endorsement for the first time and has no ELDT exemption. When must the required hazardous-materials training be completed?

Correct answer: Before taking the H endorsement knowledge test.

For a first H endorsement, required ELDT precedes the hazardous-materials knowledge test. That differs from first A/B or P/S credentials, where the applicable training is tied to skills-test eligibility.

Source: ORC 4506.09(F)(1)(c) and following electronic-verification paragraph, training before initial H knowledge testing; effective June 30, 2025. ↗

  8. An Ohio applicant needs federally required ELDT. Which provider listing should the applicant check when choosing the training provider?

Correct answer: FMCSA's Training Provider Registry.

Required ELDT must come from a provider listed on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry. Medical-examiner, fingerprinting and registration-agency listings serve different purposes.

Source: Overview, entry-level training paragraph and Training Provider Registry link, immediately before Classes of License and Commercial Learner's Permits; updated February 4, 2026. ↗

  9. An Ohio CDL holder in non-excepted interstate driving completes a new qualifying medical examination in 2026. Under Ohio BMV's current electronic-process notice, how does the examination information normally reach BMV?

Correct answer: FMCSA transmits the examination information electronically.

Ohio BMV's June 23, 2025 process update says FMCSA electronically transmits examination results and variance information. It says CDL and CLP holders no longer need to submit a paper Medical Examiner's Certificate; required medical examinations and self-certification continue.

Source: CDL Medical Self-Certification > Important Regulatory Changes for CDL and CLP Holders, electronic-transmission notice effective June 23, 2025; reviewed September 12, 2026. ↗

  10. An Ohio CDL applicant expects to haul freight across state lines and is subject to, and meets, the federal Part 391 medical requirements. Which self-certification category fits this operation?

    Correct answer: Non-excepted interstate.

Cross-state operation that is subject to the federal medical requirements belongs in non-excepted interstate. Excepted status depends on a qualifying exception, not merely on having a current medical certificate.

    Source: ORC 4506.10(A)(1)(a)(i)–(ii) and (b)(i)–(ii), four medical self-certification categories; effective October 3, 2023. ↗

  11. A commercial freight combination has a gross combination weight rating of 28,000 pounds. The towed trailer's GVWR is 12,000 pounds. Actual weights do not exceed those ratings, and no CDL exemption applies. Which license class covers this combination?

    Correct answer: Class A.

The combination is rated at least 26,001 pounds and the towed unit is rated over 10,000 pounds, making it Class A. The over-10,000-pound test applies to the towed unit, not merely to the towing truck.

    Source: ORC 4506.12(B)(1), Class A combined-weight and towed-vehicle thresholds; effective July 1, 2015. ↗

  12. A commercial straight truck has a GVWR of 30,000 pounds and tows a trailer rated at 9,000 pounds. Actual weights do not exceed those ratings, and no exemption applies. What is the lowest license class that covers this combination?

    Correct answer: Class B.

Class B covers a qualifying single vehicle of at least 26,001 pounds towing a vehicle not over 10,000 pounds. The lighter trailer does not turn this combination into Class A.

Source: ORC 4506.12(B)(1)–(2), Class A and Class B towing thresholds; effective July 1, 2015. ↗

  13. A commercial shuttle is designed for 16 people including the driver. It is not a school bus, has a GVWR of 12,000 pounds, tows nothing and carries no hazardous material. Which is its lowest CDL class?

    Correct answer: Class C.

A vehicle outside Classes A and B that is designed for at least 16 people, including the driver, falls in Class C. The driver also needs the appropriate passenger endorsement; the number actually aboard does not replace design capacity.

Source: ORC 4506.12(B)(3) and (C)(3), Class C passenger design capacity and P endorsement; effective July 1, 2015. ↗

  14. Which Ohio CDL restriction bars vehicles equipped with air brakes, rather than only vehicles equipped with full air brakes?

    Correct answer: L.

L restricts the driver to vehicles without air brakes. Z is the separate restriction against full-air-brake vehicles; E concerns transmission type and O concerns tractor-trailers.

    Source: ORC 4506.12(D)(1), (3), (6) and (9), E/L/O/Z restrictions; effective July 1, 2015. ↗

  15. The letter N appears in the restrictions section of an Ohio CDL, not in its endorsement list. What does that N mean?

Correct answer: The driver may not operate Class A or B passenger vehicles.

As a CDL restriction, N excludes Class A and B passenger vehicles. N as an endorsement means tank vehicles, so the label's location matters.

    Source: ORC 4506.12(C)(4) and (D)(5), tank endorsement N versus passenger-vehicle restriction N; effective July 1, 2015. ↗

  16. An applicant sees X in the full-CDL endorsement list and X in the CLP restriction list. Which reading is correct?

Correct answer: CDL X combines tank/hazmat; CLP X prohibits tank cargo.

The CDL X endorsement combines tank-vehicle and placarded-hazardous-material authority. The CLP X restriction means no cargo in a tank vehicle. A restriction must not be mistaken for an endorsement.

    Source: ORC 4506.12(C)(6) and (G)(7), full-CDL X endorsement versus CLP X no-cargo restriction; effective July 1, 2015. ↗

  17. An Ohio CDL is issued with an E restriction. What transmission limitation does that restriction impose?

Correct answer: The commercial vehicle must have an automatic transmission.

Ohio's E restriction limits the driver to automatic-transmission commercial vehicles. It is not an air-brake or trailer restriction.

    Source: ORC 4506.12(D)(1), automatic-transmission restriction E; effective July 1, 2015. ↗

  18. Which minimum test size and passing percentage does Ohio's rule specify for general commercial-driver knowledge?

Correct answer: 50 questions and 80 percent correct.

Ohio's rule calls for a minimum of 50 equally weighted general commercial-knowledge questions and 80 percent correct. This statement does not establish a knowledge-test timer or a number of answer choices.

Source: Rule 4501:1-1-08(B), opening sentence, minimum general-commercial-knowledge test size and passing percentage; effective April 10, 2016. ↗

  19. A driver seeks a full passenger (P) endorsement for the first time and qualifies for no testing waiver. Besides applicable training and other requirements, which testing is required for P?

Correct answer: Both passenger knowledge and skills tests.

A full passenger endorsement requires both knowledge and skills testing when no waiver applies. A CLP passenger endorsement is not the same as completing the requirements for a full P endorsement.

Source: Endorsements and Restrictions > Endorsements, P entry: Passenger, Knowledge and Skills Tests; updated February 4, 2026. ↗

  20. A driver holds an Ohio Class A CDL but has never obtained motorcycle authorization. Does the CDL alone authorize riding a conventional two-wheel motorcycle on public roads?

Correct answer: No; separate motorcycle authorization is required.

Ohio allows a CDL holder to drive lesser vehicle classes subject to endorsements and restrictions, but expressly excludes motorcycle operation unless the person is separately licensed for it under Chapter 4507.

Source: ORC 4506.12(A), motorcycle exception to the commercial-license lesser-class privilege; effective July 1, 2015. ↗
