  1. A rider believes a prescription medicine cannot interfere with motorcycle operation because it was legally prescribed. What is correct?

Correct answer: Prescription and over-the-counter medicines can affect riding ability.

Legal availability does not establish fitness to ride. Medicines can impair the mental and physical processes needed for riding, and combining drugs with alcohol can increase the danger. Do not ride while impaired.

  2. A rider says a small amount of alcohol improves confidence and therefore makes riding safer. What is the correct assessment?

Correct answer: Alcohol can reduce judgment and riding skill even when the rider feels confident.

Feeling confident is not a measure of unimpaired ability. Alcohol can interfere with judgment, reactions and the coordination needed to control a motorcycle. Choose a sober ride.

  3. On a long ride, what rest pattern does the handbook recommend?

Correct answer: Stop and get off the motorcycle at least every two hours, and sooner if tired.

Regular breaks help manage fatigue; stop earlier if your alertness or control declines. This is a riding-safety recommendation, not a commercial hours-of-service rule.

  4. Cold rain has made your hands numb and your clothing soaked. Why is continuing without addressing it unsafe?

Correct answer: Cold and wet exposure can impair control and increase fatigue.

Clothing must help keep the rider warm and dry as well as protected. Stop safely and address the exposure instead of riding with reduced feeling and control.

  5. An experienced solo rider plans a first trip with a passenger. Where should they first learn how the added weight changes handling?

Correct answer: In a controlled area away from traffic.

A passenger changes acceleration, balance, turning and braking. Equip the motorcycle correctly, brief the passenger and practice before joining traffic.

  6. Before carrying a passenger, which motorcycle adjustments should you check in the owner's manual?

Correct answer: The appropriate tire pressures and suspension settings for the added load.

Passenger weight changes the motorcycle's response and rear ride height. Use the manufacturer's load-specific instructions for tire pressure, suspension and other preparations.

  7. You brief a passenger before leaving. What should you tell them about their feet at a traffic stop?

Correct answer: Keep both feet on the passenger pegs.

The passenger should keep their feet supported even at stops and avoid moving parts and hot exhaust. Unexpected passenger movement can disturb the rider’s balance.

  8. On a normal two-wheel turn, how should a passenger position their body?

Correct answer: Stay directly behind the rider and lean with the rider.

A predictable passenger position helps the operator manage balance. Brief the passenger to hold securely and avoid unnecessary movement.

  9. You are carrying a passenger and preparing to enter a stream of traffic. What change should you make compared with solo riding?

Correct answer: Wait for a larger usable gap.

Added weight affects how quickly the motorcycle responds. Allow more time and space when crossing, joining or merging with traffic.

Source: South Carolina Motorcycle and Moped Operator's Manual, currently posted PDF; printed 8-2 (PDF page 81); Larger gaps with passengers. ↗

  10. With a passenger aboard, a stop ahead requires planning. What is the appropriate adjustment?

Correct answer: Begin slowing earlier and leave a larger space cushion.

A loaded motorcycle responds differently and may take longer to slow. Adjust speed and space in advance, particularly before curves, bumps and stops.

  11. You are deciding between a high stack on a rear rack and properly mounted low luggage within the bike’s limits. Which better supports balance?

Correct answer: Keeping the load low and securely attached.

High cargo raises the center of gravity and can disturb balance. Use approved mounting points and respect the motorcycle and luggage system’s load limits.

Source: South Carolina Motorcycle and Moped Operator's Manual, currently posted PDF; printed 12-9–12-10 (PDF page 116); Keep loads low. ↗

  12. A rider hangs a heavy bag far behind the rear axle. Why should the placement be reconsidered?

Correct answer: It can change steering and braking and contribute to a wobble.

The handbook advises carrying weight over or ahead of the rear axle. Keep luggage within the manufacturer’s limits and clear of controls; rearward weight can impair handling.

Source: South Carolina Motorcycle and Moped Operator's Manual, currently posted PDF; printed 12-10 (PDF page 117); Keep loads forward. ↗

  13. One saddlebag is heavily loaded while the other is almost empty. What is the better arrangement?

Correct answer: Distribute the weight more evenly between the sides.

Uneven loading can cause the motorcycle to pull or drift. Balanced, securely attached cargo reduces an avoidable handling problem.

Source: South Carolina Motorcycle and Moped Operator's Manual, currently posted PDF; printed 12-10 (PDF page 117); Even load distribution. ↗

  14. A luggage bundle was secure when you started. What should you do during the trip?

Correct answer: Stop periodically to check that it has not shifted or loosened.

Vibration and motion can change a load’s security. Make checks while safely stopped, and keep straps and luggage from contacting wheels, chains or controls.

Source: South Carolina Motorcycle and Moped Operator's Manual, currently posted PDF; printed 12-10 (PDF page 117); Check load security. ↗

  15. Many friends want to join one motorcycle ride. Which group arrangement does the handbook recommend?

Correct answer: Keep the riding group small and plan ahead.

Small groups, advance planning and adequate spacing help riders communicate and avoid interfering with traffic. Group membership does not give anyone priority over other road users.

Source: South Carolina Motorcycle and Moped Operator's Manual, currently posted PDF; printed 8-4 (PDF page 83); Group size. ↗

  16. Your hands remain on the grips, but you are absorbed in an argument you had earlier. Can this still affect riding safety?

Correct answer: Yes. Mental distraction can take attention away from riding.

Distraction can involve the mind as well as the eyes or hands. Ride only when you can give the road and the control task your attention.

Source: South Carolina Motorcycle and Moped Operator's Manual, currently posted PDF; printed 9-3 (PDF page 89); Mental distraction. ↗

  17. A long motorcycle trip starts early tomorrow. Which preparation helps reduce fatigue risk before departure?

Correct answer: Get a good night's sleep before the trip.

Rest before departure matters, as do appropriate clothing and regular breaks. Do not start a demanding trip already fatigued.

Source: South Carolina Motorcycle and Moped Operator's Manual, currently posted PDF; printed 9-4 (PDF page 90); Rest before a trip. ↗

  18. South Carolina permits no more than two motorcycles abreast. Why does the riding manual still advise against traveling directly alongside another rider?

Correct answer: Each rider has less room to avoid a hazard.

Legal permission is not a safety recommendation. Side-by-side riding leaves less room to maneuver; use an appropriate staggered or single-file formation for the road and conditions.

Source: South Carolina Motorcycle and Moped Operator's Manual, currently posted PDF; printed 8-4 (PDF page 83); Do not pair up. ↗

  19. A group reaches a slower vehicle on a two-lane highway where passing is permitted. How should riders pass?

Correct answer: One at a time, each checking their own safe opening.

Each rider needs a safe, lawful opportunity and enough return space. A gap that worked for the leader may not remain available for the rest of the group.

Source: South Carolina Motorcycle and Moped Operator's Manual, currently posted PDF; printed 8-5 (PDF page 84); Passing in a group. ↗

  20. A group riding in a staggered formation approaches a series of curves. Which formation is generally preferable there?

Correct answer: Single file with adequate following space.

Single file gives riders room to choose a safe path through curves. The handbook also recommends it for turns and entering or leaving a highway; keep enough space for the conditions.
