  1. A 15-year-old wants a first South Carolina motorcycle beginner's permit. Which statement is correct?

Correct answer: The minimum age is met, but an authorized adult must give consent.

Class M permits are available from age 15. Applicants under 18 need consent from a qualified adult and must still meet the testing and documentation requirements.

  2. It is 7 p.m. during standard time. May a South Carolina motorcycle beginner ride alone merely because the street is well lit?

Correct answer: No. Solo practice ends at 6 p.m. in standard time.

Solo Class M practice is allowed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., extended to 8 p.m. during daylight saving time. Riding outside those hours requires the specified supervision.

  3. For Class M practice outside solo hours, a supervisor stays within safe viewing distance. Which qualifications are required?

Correct answer: Motorcycle license, age 21 or older, and at least one year of driving experience.

The supervisor must have a motorcycle license, be at least 21 and have at least one year of driving experience. The supervisor must remain a safe distance away and able to see the learner riding.

  4. A 19-year-old first-time driver is following South Carolina's beginner-permit route. What minimum permit holding period does SCDMV currently list?

Correct answer: 30 days for applicants age 18 or older.

SCDMV currently lists 30 days for applicants 18 or older and 180 days for those under 18. Use the current permit requirements rather than an older all-ages rule.

Source: SCDMV Beginner's Permit; required holding period ↗

  5. You bring a motorcycle for a skills test but it fails the pre-trip inspection. Does this count as the attempt required before renewing a Class M permit?

Correct answer: No. You must pass the pre-trip inspection and make a bona fide skills-test attempt.

SCDMV explicitly excludes a failed pre-trip inspection from the required attempt. The process includes taking the motorcycle to the test pad, passing inspection and genuinely attempting the skills test.

Source: SCDMV Beginner's Permit; renewing Class M / bona fide skills attempt ↗

  6. After three failed South Carolina motorcycle skills tests, what route does SCDMV require?

Correct answer: Complete an authorized motorcycle safety course and pass its skills test.

After three failures, another motorcycle permit is not available through that route. An SCDMV-authorized course and a passing skills test within it are required.

  7. A rider has a valid South Carolina Class D license and wants to drive a trike. Is a Class M license required solely because it has three wheels?

Correct answer: No. A trike may be driven with a license other than a moped-only license.

SCDMV does not require Class M for a trike; a moped-only license is insufficient. An automotive three-wheel vehicle with a bench seat requires at least Class D.

  8. You attach a detachable sidecar to a two-wheel motorcycle. Which licensing rule applies in South Carolina?

Correct answer: A motorcycle Class M license is required.

A motorcycle with a detachable sidecar remains subject to the Class M requirement. Passing the sidecar road test results in an S3 restriction; do not confuse it with the separate trike rule.

  9. A 20-year-old rides as a passenger on a two-wheel motorcycle. Who must comply with the under-21 helmet rule?

Correct answer: The passenger, as well as any operator who is under 21.

The helmet requirement applies to both operators and passengers under 21. Use an approved helmet with the required retention strap and reflective features; protective equipment is advisable for older riders too.

Source: South Carolina Code 56-5-3660; helmets for operators and passengers under 21 ↗

  10. A 19-year-old operates a motorcycle without a windscreen meeting state specifications. What eye protection does South Carolina law require?

Correct answer: Approved goggles or an approved face shield.

Under-21 operators need approved goggles or a face shield unless the motorcycle has a qualifying windscreen. That exception does not remove the separate under-21 helmet requirement.

  11. You plan to carry a box under one arm while operating a motorcycle. Why is that arrangement prohibited?

Correct answer: It prevents you from keeping both hands on the handlebars.

Do not carry an article that prevents both hands from being kept on the handlebars. Secure suitable cargo without obstructing your view or control.

Source: South Carolina Code 56-5-3630(C); carrying articles ↗

  12. A passenger on the rear seat cannot reach both footrests while sitting astride. May the passenger ride there?

Correct answer: No. A rear-seat passenger must be able to reach the footrests with both feet.

South Carolina requires both feet to reach the footrests in this seating position. The statute treats sidecar passengers separately; that exception does not apply to a rear-seat passenger.

Source: South Carolina Code 56-5-3630(E) and 56-5-3650(A); passenger footrests ↗

  13. A car driver tries to squeeze alongside your motorcycle within your lane. What right does the motorcycle have?

Correct answer: Full use of the lane; the car must not deprive you of that space.

A motorcycle is entitled to a full lane. Do not interpret the separate rule allowing two motorcycles abreast as permission for a car to crowd a rider.

Source: South Carolina Code 56-5-3640(a); full use of a lane ↗

  14. Traffic is queued in two adjacent lanes. May an ordinary motorcycle rider travel between the rows in South Carolina?

Correct answer: No. Riding between lanes or adjacent rows of vehicles is prohibited.

South Carolina does not allow an ordinary rider to lane-split between rows of traffic. The statutory police-duty exception is not a general rider exemption.

Source: South Carolina Code 56-5-3640(c) and (e); between-lane operation ↗

  15. Three motorcycle riders propose riding abreast in one traffic lane. What does South Carolina law permit?

Correct answer: No more than two motorcycles abreast in a single lane.

The legal maximum is two abreast. A legal maximum is not a recommendation to ride side by side; keep adequate maneuvering space and use appropriate group-riding technique.

Source: South Carolina Code 56-5-3640(d); riding abreast ↗

  16. There is spare width beside a car ahead. May an ordinary motorcycle rider overtake it without leaving the car's lane?

Correct answer: No. Do not overtake within the same lane occupied by that car.

For an ordinary rider, South Carolina prohibits overtaking in the same lane as the vehicle being passed. Wait for a legal and safe opportunity to change lanes and pass.

Source: South Carolina Code 56-5-3640(b) and (e); overtaking in the occupied lane ↗

  17. You remove the motorcycle's only rear-view mirror and plan to rely entirely on head checks. Is that enough to meet South Carolina's equipment rule?

Correct answer: No. The motorcycle needs a mirror that provides an adequate view behind.

A rear-view mirror providing ample rearward vision is required. Head checks supplement mirrors; they do not remove the equipment requirement.

Source: South Carolina Code 56-5-3650(B); rear-view mirror ↗

  18. Your motorcycle is designed for one person. A friend offers to sit behind you on luggage strapped to the fender. What should you do?

Correct answer: Decline; passengers need a motorcycle and attached seating designed for them.

A passenger may ride only when the motorcycle is designed to carry more than one person and has the required seat. Passenger position must not obstruct the rider's view or control.

Source: South Carolina Code 56-5-3630(A), (B) and (D); passenger seating and control ↗

  19. Your motorcycle has remained fully stopped at a steady red light for 120 seconds. What does South Carolina's motorcycle exception require before proceeding?

Correct answer: Exercise due care, treat it as a stop sign and proceed only when safe.

The exception requires a full 120-second stop plus due care and a safe opportunity to proceed as at a stop sign. It grants no priority over conflicting traffic. Act 173 retains this motorcycle/moped rule separately from the bicycle rules.

    Source: South Carolina Act 173 of 2026, section 1; 56-5-970(C)(5), effective May 18, 2026 ↗

  20. A friend offers to tow your moving motorcycle by letting you hold onto the side of a truck. Is this permitted?

Correct answer: No. A rider must not attach themselves or the motorcycle to another roadway vehicle.

South Carolina prohibits this attachment while riding on the roadway. Arrange appropriate roadside assistance or transport instead of holding onto another vehicle.

Source: South Carolina Code 56-5-3630(F); attachment to another vehicle ↗
