Review all 26 questions with answers
  1. You will drive a nonexempt 40,000-pound combination with a trailer rated at 14,000 pounds. Which base CDL class covers this combination?

    Correct answer: Class A.

A combination at 26,001 pounds or more falls in Class A when the towed unit exceeds 10,000 pounds. Required endorsements and restrictions still matter.

  2. A nonexempt straight truck has a GVWR of 30,000 pounds and does not tow a trailer. What is the minimum base CDL class for its weight?

    Correct answer: Class B.

Class B covers a single vehicle of 26,001 pounds or more. Intrastate operation does not by itself remove the CDL requirement.

  3. A nonexempt bus has a GVWR of 24,000 pounds and is designed for 18 people including its driver. It is nearly empty today. Which licensing conclusion is correct?

Correct answer: It falls within CDL Class C and requires the passenger endorsement.

For this below-Class-B bus, the designed seating capacity—not today's passenger count—triggers Class C passenger licensing.

  4. A nonexempt delivery truck below 26,001 pounds carries a load requiring hazardous-material placards. What is the appropriate licensing conclusion?

Correct answer: Its low weight does not exempt it; Class C and the required hazardous-material endorsement apply.

Required placarding can trigger Class C even when the vehicle is below the weight threshold for Class B. The scenario excludes specific exemptions.

  5. A 19-year-old South Dakota commercial driver has a K restriction and is offered a trip across the state line. What does that restriction mean?

Correct answer: The driver's commercial operation is restricted to intrastate driving.

South Dakota's ordinary commercial minimum age is 18, with interstate operation requiring age 21. K restricts commercial driving to intrastate operation; a higher vehicle class or an empty trailer does not remove that restriction.

  6. You obtained a South Dakota CLP five days ago and have completed the required training. Can you take the ordinary commercial skills test now?

Correct answer: No; hold a valid CLP for at least 14 days before the skills test.

Training completion and the CLP holding period are separate requirements. South Dakota requires a CLP held for 14 days before the CDL skills test.

  7. An adult applicant has no South Dakota driver license and wants a South Dakota CLP. Which starting qualification does the licensing program require?

Correct answer: Hold a valid South Dakota Class 1 or Class 2 operator's license.

The CLP requirements include being at least 18 and holding a valid South Dakota Class 1 or Class 2 operator's license. Passing a commercial knowledge test does not replace the underlying license.

  8. A South Dakota CLP holder wants to practice in a Class A combination. A friend has only a noncommercial Class 1 car license. Can that friend provide the required commercial supervision?

Correct answer: No; the supervisor must be at least 21 with the valid CDL class and endorsements for the vehicle.

South Dakota requires an accompanying CDL holder at least 21 who is licensed for the vehicle. In this truck, the supervisor sits beside the learner to give instruction; a car license alone is insufficient.

Source: South Dakota Commercial Driver License Manual, Revised 07/2025, Commercial Drivers Learner's Permit - accompanying qualified CDL holder; physical PDF page 15. ↗

  9. You have a South Dakota CLP with passenger and school-bus endorsements. May you use a practice drive to carry the regular school route's children?

Correct answer: No; the CLP is not authority to transport the regular passenger or school-bus load.

A P or S CLP does not authorize regular passenger service. The listed exceptions concern such people as authorized examiners, inspectors, trainees, and the accompanying qualified CDL holder—not the regular school route's children.

Source: South Dakota Commercial Driver License Manual, Revised 07/2025, 1 Introduction - Restrictions, (P) No passengers in CMV bus, printed 1-3; state CLP passenger prohibition, physical PDF page 15; physical PDF page 32. ↗

  10. A South Dakota CLP holder with the tank endorsement will practice with a tank vehicle. Its liquid has been drained, but hazardous residue remains. Is that permitted?

Correct answer: No; the tank must be empty and must not contain hazardous-material residue.

The CLP tank restriction requires an empty tank. A tank that carried hazardous material must also be purged of residue; draining liquid alone is insufficient.

Source: South Dakota Commercial Driver License Manual, Revised 07/2025, Commercial Drivers Learner's Permit - empty tank and purged hazardous residue; physical PDF page 15. ↗

  11. A South Dakota applicant wants hazardous-material authority on a commercial learner permit. Can an H endorsement be added to the CLP for supervised hazardous-material hauling?

Correct answer: No; the CLP endorsements are limited to P, S, and N, with their permit restrictions.

The South Dakota manual limits CLP endorsements to passenger, school bus, and tank, with permit restrictions. It does not allow an H endorsement on the learner permit.

Source: South Dakota Commercial Driver License Manual, Revised 07/2025, 1 Introduction - CDL Endorsements & Restrictions, CLP P/S/N limit, printed 1-2; physical PDF page 31. ↗

  12. A new applicant seeks a first Class A CDL and has no applicable training exemption. Is self-study alone enough to satisfy entry-level driver training requirements?

Correct answer: No; the applicant must complete the applicable ELDT requirements through a registered training provider.

A first Class A applicant without an applicable exemption must complete required ELDT through a registered provider before the skills test. Self-study does not replace that training and its reported completion.

Source: South Dakota Commercial Driver License Manual, Revised 07/2025, Entry-Level Driver Training requirements - applicable drivers and application process; Training Provider Registry, physical PDF page 9; physical PDF page 8. ↗

  13. A South Dakota CDL holder wants an H endorsement for the first time. Which preparation is required in addition to the hazardous-material knowledge test?

Correct answer: Complete the required security threat assessment and applicable ELDT.

A first H endorsement requires the federal security screening and applicable entry-level training as well as the knowledge test. Employer permission does not replace these requirements.

Source: South Dakota Commercial Driver License Manual, Revised 07/2025, Entry-Level Driver Training requirements - H Endorsement process; physical PDF page 8. 14. A driver's South Dakota CDL has an L restriction. Can the driver accept a commercial vehicle equipped with air brakes merely because its weight matches the license class?

Correct answer: No; the air-brake restriction still prohibits that operation.

The L restriction means no air-brake-equipped CMV. Matching the base weight class is necessary but does not remove equipment restrictions.

Source: South Dakota Commercial Driver License Manual, Revised 07/2025, South Dakota Commercial Driver License Restrictions - L; physical PDF page 20. ↗

  15. A driver received a Z restriction after the skills test in an air-over-hydraulic vehicle. Which offered vehicle does that restriction prohibit?

Correct answer: A CMV equipped with a full air-brake system.

Z restricts operation of full-air-brake-equipped commercial vehicles. It addresses the braking system, not the cargo or transmission.

Source: South Dakota Commercial Driver License Manual, Revised 07/2025, 1 Introduction - Restrictions, (Z) No full air brake equipped CMV, printed 1-3; physical PDF page 32. ↗

  16. You plan to operate a manual-transmission Class B truck but take the initial skills test in an automatic-transmission vehicle. What restriction should you expect?

Correct answer: An E restriction against operating manual-transmission CMVs.

Testing in an automatic vehicle results in a restriction against manual-transmission commercial vehicles. The knowledge test does not establish the missing manual-transmission skill.

Source: South Dakota Commercial Driver License Manual, Revised 07/2025, 1 Introduction - Restrictions, (E) No manual transmission, printed 1-3; physical PDF page 32. ↗

  17. You will drive a full-size school bus designed for 40 people, carrying children between home and school. In addition to its appropriate CDL class, which endorsements are required?

Correct answer: Passenger (P) and school bus (S).

The bus meets the passenger-capacity requirement and is used for school transportation. The P and S requirements address different parts of that operation.

  18. You self-certify as non-excepted interstate (NI) and complete a new required medical exam. Under South Dakota's current process, how does the certification reach your licensing record?

Correct answer: The certified examiner submits it electronically through the National Registry, and the state receives the record.

The current South Dakota form requires the medical examiner to submit NI/NA medical certification through the National Registry. Paper, emailed, or faxed certificates are not accepted at a licensing office.

Source: South Dakota Medical Self-Certification Statement, March 2026, Things to keep in mind - NI/NA electronic medical certificate submission; current official source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  19. A South Dakota CDL holder operates only within the state and does not qualify for an excepted interstate category. Under the rule effective July 1, 2026, does intrastate operation by itself remove the medical-certificate requirement?

Correct answer: No; the driver must maintain the required medical certificate.

The March 2026 form says all CDL holders must maintain medical certification beginning July 1, 2026 unless they qualify for EI exceptions. It lists non-excepted intrastate (NA), not the manual's older excepted-intrastate option.

Source: South Dakota Medical Self-Certification Statement, March 2026, Things to keep in mind - July 1, 2026 requirement and NA category; current official source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  20. Your truck never leaves South Dakota, but its delivery is one leg of cargo that originated outside the state. For medical self-certification, is physical location alone enough to call the trip intrastate?

Correct answer: No; movement within the state can still be part of interstate commerce.

Within-state transportation can still be part of interstate commerce when its cargo or passengers are part of a trip beginning or ending outside the state. Consider the shipment's movement, not only the truck's path.

Source: South Dakota Commercial Driver License Manual, Revised 07/2025, 1.2.1 Interstate or Intrastate Commerce?, printed 1-6; physical PDF page 35. ↗

  21. A South Dakota CDL holder is in prohibited status under the federal drug and alcohol Clearinghouse requirements. Does an unexpired plastic CDL alone authorize continued commercial driving?

Correct answer: No; prohibited status prevents CMV operation until the required return-to-duty process is completed and eligibility is restored.

The South Dakota manual explains that prohibited Clearinghouse status results in loss or denial of commercial privileges. The required return-to-duty process must be completed; an unexpired card alone does not authorize CMV operation.

  22. A South Dakota CDL holder is convicted of a first DUI while driving a personal, noncommercial car. What federal consequence applies to commercial driving?

Correct answer: A one-year disqualification from operating a CMV.

The federal disqualification table applies a one-year CMV disqualification to a first DUI conviction by a CDL holder in a noncommercial vehicle. A personal vehicle does not insulate commercial privileges.

Source: Electronic Code of Federal Regulations, 49 CFR 383.51(a)(3), (b), Table 1 row (1), first non-CMV conviction; current official source reviewed September 29, 2026. Cross-check: South Dakota CDL Manual, Major Traffic Violations, physical PDF page 22. ↗

  23. A South Dakota applicant has passed the CDL knowledge tests and prepares for the commercial skills appointment. Which set of abilities will the skills test evaluate?

Correct answer: Vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control, and on-road driving.

The CDL skills test has inspection, basic-control, and road-driving parts. Passing knowledge tests does not replace demonstration of those skills.

Source: South Dakota Commercial Driver License Manual, Revised 07/2025, Skills Tests - vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and road test; physical PDF page 16. ↗

  24. A driver operating a CMV in South Dakota has a measured alcohol concentration of 0.04 percent. Is it sound to argue that the ordinary 0.08 threshold allows continued CMV driving?

Correct answer: No; 0.04 percent or more triggers the commercial alcohol disqualification provision.

The federal commercial disqualification rule uses an alcohol concentration of 0.04 or greater while operating a CMV. This threshold is not a promise that driving below it is safe or lawful under every alcohol rule.

Source: Electronic Code of Federal Regulations, 49 CFR 383.51(b), Table 1 row (3), alcohol concentration 0.04 or greater while operating a CMV; current official source reviewed September 29, 2026. Cross-check: South Dakota CDL Manual, Major Traffic Violations and chemical-test alcohol threshold, physical PDF page 22. ↗

  25. A CDL truck is designed to transport water in a permanently attached 1,200-gallon tank. Does the water's nonhazardous nature remove the tank endorsement requirement?

Correct answer: No; an N endorsement can be required for a qualifying liquid tank even when the contents are not hazardous.

A single 1,200-gallon liquid tank meets the individual-over-119-gallon and aggregate-at-least-1,000-gallon capacity criteria. Hazardous classification is not necessary for the N requirement.

Source: South Dakota Commercial Driver License Manual, Revised 07/2025, Knowledge Tests - Tank Vehicle Test; 1 Introduction, Tank Vehicle (N), physical PDF page 31; physical PDF page 15. ↗

  26. A 19-year-old South Dakota CDL applicant will drive only intrastate. Which medical self-certification plan matches the current state form?

Correct answer: Use non-excepted intrastate (NA) and maintain a valid medical certificate.

The March 2026 form says drivers under 21 cannot certify NI or EI but must maintain a medical certificate. It expressly includes under-21 drivers in NA.

Source: South Dakota Medical Self-Certification Statement, March 2026, Under-21 instruction and Non-Excepted Intrastate (NA); current official source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗
