Review all 20 questions with answers
  1. You are adjusting the driver's seat in a car with a frontal air bag. What seating position does NHTSA recommend?

Correct answer: At least 10 inches between your breastbone and the air-bag cover while comfortably reaching the pedals.

Leave the recommended clearance while keeping proper posture and control of the pedals. An advanced air bag does not remove the need for a safe seating position or a safety belt.

Source: NHTSA: advanced frontal air bags, 10-inch clearance; official source checked September 22, 2026. ↗

  2. You are about to drive a borrowed car and its mirrors are positioned for someone else. When should you adjust them?

Correct answer: Before you start driving, from your normal driving position.

Set up the mirrors before moving. The inside mirror should give a useful view through the rear window, and proper adjustment still does not eliminate blind spots.

Source: Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, Volume 1, Edition 10, July 2026 (07222026); Inspecting your vehicle: mirror adjustment; printed page 82, physical PDF page 94. Checked September 22, 2026. ↗

  3. A large decoration hangs from the mirror and swings across part of your forward view. What is the sensible pre-drive action?

Correct answer: Remove the obstruction before setting off.

Objects hanging from the mirror and windshield clutter can hide hazards. Clear the viewing area instead of trying to drive around an avoidable blind area.

Source: Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, Volume 1, Edition 10, July 2026 (07222026); Inspecting your vehicle: unobstructed view; printed page 83, physical PDF page 95. Checked September 22, 2026. ↗

  4. During a pre-trip check, the brake pedal produces very little stopping action. What should you do?

Correct answer: Do not begin the trip; have the brake problem inspected and corrected.

Poor braking is a safety defect, not a condition that extra following distance reliably fixes. Arrange qualified inspection rather than experimenting in traffic.

Source: Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, Volume 1, Edition 10, July 2026 (07222026); Braking system: warning symptoms; printed page 83, physical PDF page 95. Checked September 22, 2026. ↗

  5. Your car is secured in a safe parking place. How can you check that its brake lights actually illuminate?

Correct answer: Have a helper press the brake pedal while you observe the rear lights.

Checking a light requires checking its operation, not just the appearance of its lens. The guide recommends a partner for observing the brake lights when the pedal is pressed.

Source: Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, Volume 1, Edition 10, July 2026 (07222026); Lights: checking brake lights; printed page 83, physical PDF page 95. Checked September 22, 2026. ↗

  6. The wiper blades move but leave broad streaks that interfere with your view. What should you do before driving in rain?

Correct answer: Replace the ineffective blades and make sure the windshield clears properly.

Wiper movement alone is not enough. The guide calls for replacement when their condition reduces driving visibility, rather than waiting for a complete mechanical failure.

Source: Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, Volume 1, Edition 10, July 2026 (07222026); Windshield and wipers: reduced visibility; printed page 83, physical PDF page 95. Checked September 22, 2026. ↗

  7. For the guide's recommended cold tire-pressure check, what does 'cold' mean?

Correct answer: The vehicle has not been driven for at least three hours.

Driving raises tire temperature and pressure. Cold refers to the tire's recent use, not winter weather or the engine-temperature reading.

Source: Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, Volume 1, Edition 10, July 2026 (07222026); Tires: cold-pressure measurement; printed page 84, physical PDF page 96. Checked September 22, 2026. ↗

  8. Which pressure should you normally use when checking and inflating the tires specified for your vehicle?

Correct answer: The vehicle manufacturer's recommendation on the tire-information label or owner's manual.

The tire's sidewall figure is not the vehicle-specific recommended operating pressure. Follow the vehicle guidance, including different front and rear pressures when specified.

Source: NHTSA: Maintaining Proper Tire Pressure, Step 1; official source checked September 22, 2026. ↗

  9. A tire's tread is worn down to 1/16 inch. What does the Arkansas guide recommend?

Correct answer: Replace the worn tire.

At this depth, the guide considers replacement necessary. Inflation cannot replace worn tread or restore its ability to help maintain traction on wet surfaces.

Source: Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, Volume 1, Edition 10, July 2026 (07222026); Tires: worn tread; printed page 84, physical PDF page 96. Checked September 22, 2026. ↗

  10. There is unusual free movement in the steering wheel before the wheels begin responding. What does this suggest?

Correct answer: A steering problem that should be checked by a mechanic.

Delayed steering response can make it difficult to control the vehicle. Do not dismiss it as a harmless adjustment or try to solve it by increasing speed.

Source: Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, Volume 1, Edition 10, July 2026 (07222026); Steering system: delayed response; printed page 84, physical PDF page 96. Checked September 22, 2026. ↗

  11. May you leave a gasoline car warming up inside a garage attached to a house if the garage door is open?

Correct answer: No; an open garage door does not make this safe.

CDC warns against running a car in an attached garage even with the door open. Carbon monoxide can cause serious harm and cannot be judged by whether you smell it.

Source: CDC: Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Basics, Automobile; official source checked September 22, 2026. ↗

  12. You are loading passengers and heavy luggage for a trip. Which capacity limit should you respect?

Correct answer: Both the vehicle's load limit and the tires' load limits.

A load can fit inside a vehicle while still exceeding its safe capacity. Check the applicable limits rather than using available cabin space as a weight measure.

Source: Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, Volume 1, Edition 10, July 2026 (07222026); Tires: vehicle and tire load limits; printed page 84, physical PDF page 96. Checked September 22, 2026. ↗

  13. What should an Arkansas skills-test applicant plan to provide for the driving exam?

Correct answer: A suitable vehicle for the test.

The guide says the applicant supplies the vehicle. It must meet the test's safety and document requirements; an appointment is not a vehicle reservation.

Source: Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, Volume 1, Edition 10, July 2026 (07222026); Skills test: applicant-provided vehicle; printed page 84, physical PDF page 96. Checked September 22, 2026. ↗

  14. Before taking the skills test in a borrowed car, what should you learn about that specific vehicle?

Correct answer: How to locate and operate controls such as lights, signals, wipers and emergency flashers.

Locating required controls is part of the test. Become familiar with the actual car before testing rather than trying to discover its switches while driving.

Source: Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, Volume 1, Edition 10, July 2026 (07222026); Performance guidelines: locating controls; printed page 85, physical PDF page 97. Checked September 22, 2026. ↗

  15. Your test vehicle has a temporary donut spare fitted, although the other tires are sound. What does the guide say about using it for the skills test?

Correct answer: It is not accepted with a donut spare fitted.

The guide specifically excludes donut spares from the test vehicle. Arrange a suitable, safe vehicle rather than relying on the spare's temporary-road-use rating.

Source: Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, Volume 1, Edition 10, July 2026 (07222026); Skills-test inspection: temporary spare; printed page 85, physical PDF page 97. Checked September 22, 2026. ↗

  16. You have a photocopy of your valid instruction permit but left the original at home. Is the copy the permit document listed for starting the skills exam?

Correct answer: No; the checklist requires the original permit, not a photocopy.

The skills checklist specifies the original driver's license permit and says not to photocopy or laminate it. Bring the required original rather than assuming another document can replace it.

Source: Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, Volume 1, Edition 10, July 2026 (07222026); July 7, 2026 skills checklist: original permit; printed page 86, physical PDF page 98. Checked September 22, 2026. ↗

  17. You will drive to the test center using your Arkansas instruction permit. Who must accompany you as the supervising driver?

Correct answer: A valid licensed driver who is at least 21 years old.

When the applicant is driving, the checklist sets the accompanying licensed driver's minimum age at 21. This differs from someone else driving the applicant to the center.

Source: Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, Volume 1, Edition 10, July 2026 (07222026); Skills checklist: applicant drives to the center; printed page 86, physical PDF page 98. Checked September 22, 2026. ↗

  18. Your 17-year-old friend has a valid unrestricted Class D license and will drive you to the test center while you ride as a passenger. Does the checklist allow that arrangement?

Correct answer: Yes; an unrestricted Class D driver aged 16 or older may drive the applicant there.

The checklist distinguishes transporting the applicant from supervising the applicant's own permit driving. The 16-or-older transport allowance does not make the friend a qualified under-21 supervisor.

Source: Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, Volume 1, Edition 10, July 2026 (07222026); Skills checklist: someone else drives the applicant; printed page 86, physical PDF page 98. Checked September 22, 2026. ↗

  19. The driver accompanying you has a valid license but brings only a picture of it on a phone. What does the checklist require that driver to present?

Correct answer: A hard-copy license that is valid and not expired, suspended or revoked.

The listed requirement is a valid hard-copy license. Do not confuse permission to show insurance electronically with permission to substitute a photograph for the driver's license.

Source: Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, Volume 1, Edition 10, July 2026 (07222026); Skills checklist: accompanying driver's license; printed page 86, physical PDF page 98. Checked September 22, 2026. ↗

  20. Which vehicle documents does the Arkansas skills checklist accept?

Correct answer: Current insurance proof on paper or electronically, plus valid vehicle registration.

The checklist requires both current proof of insurance and valid registration. It explicitly allows a paper or electronic insurance card; that format allowance does not eliminate the registration requirement.

Source: Arkansas Driver License Study Guide, Volume 1, Edition 10, July 2026 (07222026); Skills checklist: insurance and registration; printed page 86, physical PDF page 98. Checked September 22, 2026. ↗

Before your Arkansas skills test

Use this selected checklist alongside the official guide. Its 1-2-3 Skills Checklist is marked July 7, 2026. Requirements differ depending on whether you drive to the center or someone else drives you there. Completing online questions does not replace supervised driving or the road test.

Bring the original permit

Bring the original instruction permit; do not photocopy or laminate it. A quiz result is not an instruction permit.

Official guide, printed page 86

Plan who drives to the appointment

If you drive on your permit, your accompanying licensed driver must be 21 or older. A valid unrestricted Class D driver aged 16 or older may instead drive you there. The accompanying driver must present a valid hard-copy license.

Official guide, printed page 86

Check insurance, registration and licensing

Bring current insurance proof, on paper or electronically, and valid registration. The test vehicle must be properly licensed with the license displayed.

Official guide, printed page 85

Use a clean, mechanically sound vehicle

Check brakes, steering, lights, horn, speedometer, exhaust, tires, mirrors and windshield visibility. A temporary donut spare, unsafe tires or serious mechanical defects prevent testing. Do not use an appointment as a reason to drive an unsafe car.

Official guide, printed page 85

Locate the controls before test day

Practice locating turn signals, brake lights, headlights, horn, mirrors, emergency flashers and windshield wipers in the actual vehicle you will use.

Official guide, printed page 85

Finish within the permit's validity

The checklist says the two-year permit cannot be renewed or extended for inclement weather. Complete the skills exam and purchase the license before expiration; otherwise the checklist calls for retaking all exam phases.

Official guide, printed page 86

Schedule and check testing conditions

Schedule a driving-test appointment. Testing depends on safe weather, and the Troop Commander decides cancellations. The checklist also prohibits cameras and recording devices during testing.

Official guide, printed page 86

Bring your personal testing essentials

Bring the glasses or contacts you use. Applicants with immigration documents should bring those documents each time. Read the full official checklist for the remaining vehicle and document requirements.

For exhaust safety, we use CDC's warning: an open garage door does not make it safe to run a car in a garage attached to a house. The air-bag and tire questions also use the federal guidance linked below.
