Review all 20 questions with answers
  1. No signs or markings provide a different turning path. How should you make an ordinary turn?

Correct answer: Turn from the lane nearest the desired direction into the nearest appropriate lane.

The normal turn crosses the fewest lanes. Complete the turn in the appropriate nearest lane, then make any needed lane change separately and safely.

  2. Two lanes are authorized to turn left together. How should you keep your position through the turn?

Correct answer: Remain in your own turning lane.

When more than one turning lane is authorized, stay in your lane throughout the turn. Drifting can put you into another vehicle's path.

  3. On a clear stretch with no intervening entrances, how far before a turn must your signal operate continuously under Delaware's stated rule?

Correct answer: At least 300 feet.

The manual states at least 300 feet continuously before turning. Signal farther ahead when necessary at higher speeds, and avoid misleading nearby road users about your intended turn.

  4. You need to cross two lanes to reach the desired lane. What is the safer method?

Correct answer: Change one lane at a time, checking each movement.

A separate check for each lane change helps identify vehicles entering the same space. It is difficult to judge several lanes safely at once.

Source: Delaware Driver Manual, July 2026; printed p. 130; PDF p. 130 — Space To Merge — crossing several lanes ↗

  5. Your mirrors show no car in the adjacent lane. Before changing lanes, what additional check is needed?

Correct answer: A brief shoulder check in the direction of the move for blind-spot traffic.

Mirrors do not show every blind spot. Check briefly over the shoulder, signal and keep track of traffic ahead and beside you.

  6. You pass the expressway exit you wanted. What should you do?

Correct answer: Continue to a place where you can legally and safely change your route.

Do not back in a travel lane or make a sudden hazardous correction after a missed exit. Continue and find a safe route.

  7. Two lanes travel in your direction, and you are not passing. Which lane is the ordinary choice?

    Correct answer: The right lane.

On a road with two or more lanes in one direction, the ordinary rule is to stay right except to pass. Follow any lane-control signs and particular conditions.

  8. A vehicle ahead is turning left. Which statement correctly describes Delaware's shoulder-passing rule in this situation?

Correct answer: Passing on the right using the shoulder can be legal, but requires extreme care and a safe path.

The manual expressly permits shoulder passing of a left-turning vehicle but warns that it is crash-prone and requires extreme care. It is not a general shoulder-passing permission or a reason to proceed when unsafe.

  9. You are about to reverse out of a parking space. What should you do before getting into the car?

Correct answer: Check behind it for children and objects you may not see from the seat.

Small children and objects can be invisible from the driver's position. Check first, then back slowly while looking directly and using available assistance.

  10. You park and leave an automatic-transmission car on a street. Which preparation is correct?

Correct answer: Set the parking brake, select Park, stop the engine and remove the key.

Secure the car before leaving it. The manual requires stopping the engine, locking the ignition, removing the key and setting the brakes.

  11. On a two-way street, how close to the curb or roadway edge must you parallel park?

    Correct answer: Within 12 inches.

The manual requires parallel parking within 12 inches of the curb or edge. Leave room for traffic while avoiding contact with the curb.

Source: Delaware Driver Manual, July 2026; printed p. 91; PDF p. 91 — General Parking Rules — Parallel Parking ↗

  12. With no exception or different posting, how far from a fire hydrant must you keep when parking?

Correct answer: At least 15 feet.

Parking within 15 feet of a hydrant is prohibited. Leaving a passenger in the car does not remove that restriction.

Source: Delaware Driver Manual, July 2026; printed p. 92; PDF p. 92 — Stopping And Parking Violations — fire hydrant ↗

  13. Absent another posted rule or exception, parking within what distance of a stop sign is prohibited?

    Correct answer: 30 feet.

The manual prohibits parking within 30 feet of a flashing beacon, stop sign or traffic signal unless an applicable exception changes the situation.

Source: Delaware Driver Manual, July 2026; printed p. 93; PDF p. 93 — Stopping And Parking Violations — beacon, stop sign or signal ↗

  14. You find a parking space 10 feet from a crosswalk at an intersection, with no special permission. Is it permitted?

Correct answer: No; keep at least 20 feet from that crosswalk.

Do not stop or park within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection, absent an applicable exception. Clearance helps drivers and pedestrians see each other.

Source: Delaware Driver Manual, July 2026; printed p. 92; PDF p. 92 — Stopping And Parking Violations — intersection crosswalk ↗

  15. Unless otherwise posted, what is the minimum parking clearance from a railroad crossing?

    Correct answer: 50 feet.

The manual prohibits parking within 50 feet of a railroad crossing unless otherwise posted. Do not confuse it with the separate distance for a hydrant or traffic control.

Source: Delaware Driver Manual, July 2026; printed p. 93; PDF p. 93 — Stopping And Parking Violations — railroad crossing ↗

  16. You park facing uphill alongside a curb. How should you position the front wheels?

Correct answer: Away from the curb, with the near-side front wheel brought against it.

Uphill with a curb, turn the front wheels away and let the near-side wheel contact the curb. Also secure the vehicle with the brake and appropriate transmission position.

Source: Delaware Driver Manual, July 2026; printed p. 92; PDF p. 92 — Parking on Hill — uphill with curb ↗

  17. You park uphill where there is no curb. Which direction should the front wheels point?

Correct answer: Toward the edge of the highway.

Without a curb, turn toward the roadway edge so a rolling vehicle does not head into traffic. The manual also requires toward the curb or edge when facing downhill.

Source: Delaware Driver Manual, July 2026; printed p. 92; PDF p. 92 — Parking on Hill — uphill without curb ↗

  18. You have no qualifying disability plate or parking credential. May you use an accessible space for a two-minute errand?

Correct answer: No; a short stay does not provide authorization.

The designated space requires the proper authorization and display. Brief duration or leaving someone inside does not substitute for it.

Source: Delaware Driver Manual, July 2026; printed p. 91; PDF p. 91 — General Parking Rules — accessible parking ↗

  19. You are using an expressway entrance ramp with a safe available gap. How should you prepare to merge?

Correct answer: Use the ramp to approach traffic speed and merge into the gap safely.

Ramps provide room to build appropriate speed. Select a safe gap; do not force other drivers to yield or stop needlessly at the ramp end.

Source: Delaware Driver Manual, July 2026; printed p. 124; PDF p. 124 — Adjusting To Traffic — Entering into traffic ↗

  20. Traffic and road conditions permit normal travel as you approach an exit ramp. When should you begin the main reduction to the ramp's slower speed?

Correct answer: After moving onto the exit ramp.

Keep pace while in the through lane, then slow on the exit ramp. Signal and plan early so other traffic is not surprised by a sudden through-lane slowdown.
