Question 1 of 12
  1. 1. During CDL inspection preparation, a trainee can name a steering part but cannot describe any condition to check. What is still missing?
  2. 2. A trainee identifies the air-brake controls and gauges but never demonstrates brake performance. Is that sufficient for the required brake skills?
  3. 3. A covered truck's front tire measures 3/32 inch in a major tread groove, away from tie bars. Does it meet the federal front-wheel tread minimum?
  4. 4. A covered truck tire has deep tread, but a sidewall cut exposes its body-ply material. Which finding controls the decision?
  5. 5. A covered bus has a retreaded tire on a front wheel. Its tread depth is adequate. Is that installation permitted by the federal rule?
  6. 6. For an ordinarily operated covered truck manufactured in 2020, the wipers work but the windshield washer system does not. Is the wiper result enough?
  7. 7. A required exterior mirror gives a clear image while parked but its mounting is loose. What still needs correction?
  8. 8. A tractor-trailer subject to the ordinary two-mirror rule has both mirrors, but their positions block the driver's rearward view along the sides. What is required?
  9. 9. An exhaust leak on a covered truck has been wrapped as a temporary repair. Does the federal exhaust rule accept that patch until the next service?
  10. 10. Inspection finds an exhaust leak directly beneath a covered tractor's sleeper compartment. Why must it be corrected?
  11. 11. A worn steering ball-and-socket joint on a covered truck was repaired by welding. Should it pass the steering-system check?
  12. 12. The power-steering reservoir is adequately filled, but its drive belt is frayed and slipping. What should the inspection conclude?

  1. During CDL inspection preparation, a trainee can name a steering part but cannot describe any condition to check. What is still missing?

Correct answer: Explaining how to determine that the part is safe.

Inspection skill includes recognizing the component and explaining the safety checks it needs. Naming parts alone does not demonstrate that the trainee can recognize an unsafe condition.

  2. A trainee identifies the air-brake controls and gauges but never demonstrates brake performance. Is that sufficient for the required brake skills?

Correct answer: No; an operational brake-system check is also required.

The required skills include an operational check as well as identification and inspection. Learn the actual vehicle's safe procedure with an instructor; identifying a control does not prove that its system performs correctly.

Source: 383.113(a)(2)(vi); reviewed September 22, 2026. Federal requirements for covered operations and ordinary CDL testing; not a complete Louisiana intrastate or testing-exception guide. ↗

  3. A covered truck's front tire measures 3/32 inch in a major tread groove, away from tie bars. Does it meet the federal front-wheel tread minimum?

Correct answer: No; the minimum at that location is 4/32 inch.

The front-wheel requirement for a truck, truck tractor or bus is 4/32 inch in a major groove. The lower minimum for other tire positions does not make this front tire acceptable.

  4. A covered truck tire has deep tread, but a sidewall cut exposes its body-ply material. Which finding controls the decision?

Correct answer: The exposed reinforcement makes the tire unacceptable for operation.

Exposed body ply or belt material is a prohibited tire condition. A satisfactory tread-depth reading does not cancel a separate structural defect in the sidewall.

  5. A covered bus has a retreaded tire on a front wheel. Its tread depth is adequate. Is that installation permitted by the federal rule?

Correct answer: No; retreaded tires are prohibited on a bus's front wheels.

The bus front-wheel restriction covers regrooved, recapped and retreaded tires. It is a position- and vehicle-specific rule, not a blanket statement about every truck or rear axle.

  6. For an ordinarily operated covered truck manufactured in 2020, the wipers work but the windshield washer system does not. Is the wiper result enough?

Correct answer: No; the required washer system must also meet its requirements.

The applicable construction-date rule covers both wiping and washing systems. These are separate functions; working blades do not establish that the required washer system is serviceable.

  7. A required exterior mirror gives a clear image while parked but its mounting is loose. What still needs correction?

Correct answer: The mirror must be firmly attached.

Rear visibility and secure attachment are both required. A clear image observed at rest does not make a loose mounting satisfactory for an operating commercial vehicle.

  8. A tractor-trailer subject to the ordinary two-mirror rule has both mirrors, but their positions block the driver's rearward view along the sides. What is required?

Correct answer: Position the mirrors to provide the required rearward views.

The ordinary rule calls for rearward views along both sides, not merely two pieces of mirror glass. Specific exceptions exist, so the scenario states that the ordinary two-mirror requirement applies.

  9. An exhaust leak on a covered truck has been wrapped as a temporary repair. Does the federal exhaust rule accept that patch until the next service?

Correct answer: No; temporary exhaust repairs using wraps or patches are prohibited.

The rule expressly rejects temporary wraps and patches. The repair must address the actual defect; absence of passengers or a later appointment does not make the temporary repair acceptable.

  10. Inspection finds an exhaust leak directly beneath a covered tractor's sleeper compartment. Why must it be corrected?

Correct answer: The exhaust system must not leak at that location.

The rule prohibits leakage forward of or directly below the driver or sleeper compartment. A correctly positioned main outlet does not excuse a leak elsewhere in the system.

Source: 393.83(g); reviewed September 22, 2026. Federal requirements for covered operations and ordinary CDL testing; not a complete Louisiana intrastate or testing-exception guide. ↗

  11. A worn steering ball-and-socket joint on a covered truck was repaired by welding. Should it pass the steering-system check?

Correct answer: No; such joints must not be repaired by welding.

The prohibition applies specifically to these steering joints. A sound steering wheel does not establish that the connecting steering components meet their own safety requirements.

Source: 393.209(d); reviewed September 22, 2026. Federal requirements for covered operations and ordinary CDL testing; not a complete Louisiana intrastate or testing-exception guide. ↗

  12. The power-steering reservoir is adequately filled, but its drive belt is frayed and slipping. What should the inspection conclude?

Correct answer: The belt condition must be corrected; fluid level is not enough.

Power-steering components must be operational, and their belts must not be frayed, cracked or slipping. Checking fluid is only one part of evaluating the system.

Source: 393.209(e); reviewed September 22, 2026. Federal requirements for covered operations and ordinary CDL testing; not a complete Louisiana intrastate or testing-exception guide. ↗
