  1. Your light turns green, but a vehicle is still clearing the intersection. What should you do?

Correct answer: Wait for the crossing vehicle to clear.

A green light permits movement only when the path is clear. It does not cancel the duty to yield to road users already in the intersection.

  2. You are waiting to turn left on a steady green light. An oncoming car is going straight. Who must yield?

Correct answer: You must yield before crossing its path.

An ordinary green light is not a protected left-turn arrow. Oncoming vehicles and crossing pedestrians still have priority over your left turn.

Source: Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide linked by OMV (cover R08/25; internal revision markers vary); Left turn on steady green; printed page 33, physical PDF page 38; reviewed September 22, 2026. ↗

  3. A green arrow appears for your turn while a pedestrian remains in your path. What is the correct response?

Correct answer: Yield to the pedestrian before turning.

The arrow authorizes a direction, not a collision. Check that the intersection is clear of other road users before following it.

Source: Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide linked by OMV (cover R08/25; internal revision markers vary); Green arrow; printed page 33, physical PDF page 38; reviewed September 22, 2026. ↗

  4. A signal changes to steady yellow while you can still stop safely before the stop line. What should you do?

Correct answer: Slow down and stop before the line.

Yellow warns that red is next. Stop when you can do so safely before the stopping position; do not accelerate to race the change.

Source: Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide linked by OMV (cover R08/25; internal revision markers vary); Steady yellow signal; printed page 33, physical PDF page 38; reviewed September 22, 2026. ↗

  5. At a flashing yellow traffic light, the intersection is clear. How should you proceed?

Correct answer: Slow down, check for conflicts and continue cautiously.

A flashing yellow signal warns of a hazard. It calls for caution and a careful traffic check rather than an automatic stop on every approach.

Source: Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide linked by OMV (cover R08/25; internal revision markers vary); Flashing yellow signal; printed page 33, physical PDF page 38; reviewed September 22, 2026. ↗

  6. What do yellow centerlines generally separate?

Correct answer: Traffic moving in opposite directions.

Yellow centerlines divide opposing traffic. White lane lines normally separate vehicles traveling in the same direction.

Source: Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide linked by OMV (cover R08/25; internal revision markers vary); Yellow centerlines; printed page 34, physical PDF page 39; reviewed September 22, 2026. ↗

  7. A broken yellow centerline is on your side of a two-lane road. May you cross it to pass?

Correct answer: Only when the maneuver is otherwise legal and safe.

A broken line permits passing where other restrictions and conditions allow. It does not remove the need for adequate sight distance and a safe gap.

Source: Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide linked by OMV (cover R08/25; internal revision markers vary); Broken yellow centerline; printed page 34, physical PDF page 39; reviewed September 22, 2026. ↗

  8. Can you cross double solid yellow centerlines to overtake a slow car?

Correct answer: No; they prohibit passing across the centerline.

Do not confuse a permitted turn across centerlines with permission to pass. Double solid yellow centerlines prohibit the overtaking maneuver described.

Source: Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide linked by OMV (cover R08/25; internal revision markers vary); Double solid yellow centerline; printed page 34, physical PDF page 39; reviewed September 22, 2026. ↗

  9. You want to change lanes across a dashed white line. What does the line allow?

Correct answer: A lane change when you have checked and can move safely.

Dashed white lines allow safe lane changes. Check mirrors and the blind spot, signal, and leave adequate space.

Source: Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide linked by OMV (cover R08/25; internal revision markers vary); Dashed white lane line; printed page 35, physical PDF page 40; reviewed September 22, 2026. ↗

  10. What does a single solid white lane line tell you about changing lanes across it?

Correct answer: The movement is hazardous and requires great care.

The guide distinguishes a single solid white line from double solid white lines. A single solid white line warns that crossing it is hazardous.

Source: Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide linked by OMV (cover R08/25; internal revision markers vary); Single solid white lane line; printed page 35, physical PDF page 40; reviewed September 22, 2026. ↗

  11. In good conditions, you reach a roadside post one second after the car ahead. What does the guide's three-second rule tell you?

Correct answer: Drop back to increase the following interval.

Count from when the car ahead passes a fixed object until you pass it. Less than three seconds indicates too little space under this basic guide rule.

Source: Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide linked by OMV (cover R08/25; internal revision markers vary); Three-second following rule; printed page 65, physical PDF page 70; reviewed September 22, 2026. ↗

  12. Rain reduces traction and visibility. What should happen to your following space?

Correct answer: Increase it beyond the normal dry-road interval.

Poor conditions increase the time and distance needed to respond. Leave more room and reduce speed rather than treating a dry-road interval as sufficient.

Source: Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide linked by OMV (cover R08/25; internal revision markers vary); Following in poor conditions; printed page 66, physical PDF page 71; reviewed September 22, 2026. ↗

  13. Brakes are only one part of stopping. What else must your stopping space allow for?

Correct answer: The distance traveled while recognizing and reacting to the hazard.

The vehicle keeps moving before the brakes take effect. Perception and reaction distances are added to braking distance.

Source: Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide linked by OMV (cover R08/25; internal revision markers vary); Total stopping distance; printed page 65, physical PDF page 70; reviewed September 22, 2026. ↗

  14. Heavy rain makes the posted maximum speed unsafe. What should you do?

Correct answer: Reduce speed to one appropriate for the conditions.

A posted maximum assumes favorable conditions. Louisiana's general speed rule also requires a reasonable speed for the road, traffic, light and weather.

Source: Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide linked by OMV (cover R08/25; internal revision markers vary); Speed for conditions; printed page 87, physical PDF page 92; reviewed September 22, 2026. ↗

  15. After passing a truck, why should you avoid cutting closely in front of it?

Correct answer: The truck needs that space to stop safely.

Large trucks generally require more stopping room. Taking away their space cushion can create a rear-end collision if you then slow or stop.

Source: Louisiana Class D & E Driver's Guide linked by OMV (cover R08/25; internal revision markers vary); Truck stopping space; printed page 83, physical PDF page 88; reviewed September 22, 2026. ↗

  16. A student has a Louisiana TIP but has not yet received a learner's permit. What driving does that TIP authorize?

Correct answer: Instruction or a skills test while accompanied by a driver education instructor.

A TIP has a limited training and testing purpose. It is not the same credential as a learner's permit for supervised practice.

Source: Louisiana OMV; Class E TIP: permitted driving; official page read September 22, 2026. ↗

  17. What is the youngest age at which OMV says a Class E TIP may be issued?

    Correct answer: 14.

OMV lists age 14 as the TIP minimum. Receiving a TIP does not itself authorize ordinary learner-permit or solo driving.

Source: Louisiana OMV; Class E TIP: minimum age; official page read September 22, 2026. ↗

  18. What minimum age does OMV give for issuance of a learner's permit?

    Correct answer: 15.

A TIP may be available earlier, but OMV sets the learner's-permit minimum at 15 and also requires the applicable testing and TIP steps.

Source: Louisiana OMV; Learner's Permit: minimum age; official page read September 22, 2026. ↗

  19. A 15-year-old learner-permit holder wants to practice with a sibling. Which sibling satisfies OMV's stated supervisor category?

Correct answer: A licensed sibling at least 18 years old.

OMV permits supervision by a licensed parent or guardian, a licensed adult at least 21, or a licensed sibling at least 18. The sibling exception does not apply to every teenage friend.

Source: Louisiana OMV; Graduated Licensing Program: supervision; official page read September 22, 2026. ↗

  20. A driver received a learner's permit at 15 and has now held it for 180 days but is still 15. Is the age-and-holding-period condition for an intermediate license met?

Correct answer: No; the driver must also reach 16.

For someone starting at 15, OMV requires at least 180 days with the learner's permit AND reaching age 16. Other licensing requirements must also be met.

Source: Louisiana OMV; Graduated Licensing Program: Age 15; official page read September 22, 2026. ↗

How old must I be to get a Louisiana learner's permit?

Louisiana's learner's permit starts at age 15. A Temporary Instructional Permit, or TIP, can be issued at 14, but it is for instruction with a licensed driving-school instructor. A TIP is not the learner's permit used for supervised practice with family.

What comes before my first Louisiana learner's permit?

Obtain a TIP before taking the OMV knowledge test or beginning behind-the-wheel instruction. Complete the approved education course for your age, pass the required vision screening, and earn at least 80% on the knowledge test. Give OMV your course-completion proof and required application documents to convert the TIP.

Do first-time Louisiana drivers age 18 or older still need driver education?

Yes. First-time applicants age 18 or older may take the 14-hour pre-licensing course: six classroom hours plus eight hours of driving instruction. They may instead take the longer 38-hour driver-education course. Turning 18 does not, by itself, remove Louisiana's education requirement.
