  1. At the required Ohio school-bus railroad stop, which combination follows the prescribed procedure?

Correct answer: Parking brake set, Neutral, door fully open, looking and listening both ways.

Approach with the left driver window open and noisy equipment off. At the full stop, set the parking brake, shift to Neutral, engage noise suppression, fully open the service door and look and listen in both directions.

  2. The required Ohio rail stop is complete. How should the driver proceed after confirming the crossing can be made safely?

Correct answer: Select the appropriate gear, close the door, release the brake and cross without shifting.

The procedure includes shifting into gear, looking and listening, closing the service door and releasing the parking brake before safely crossing. Choose a gear that does not require a shift on the tracks.

  3. Traffic beyond a railroad crossing leaves insufficient space for the entire school bus to clear. What should you do?

Correct answer: Wait before the tracks until the whole bus can clear safely.

Check the containment area before entering. The handbook gives bus length plus 15 feet as a general planning guide; do not enter unless the bus can clear the tracks safely, with the required local clearance.

  4. Your bus is already crossing the tracks when the exit gate begins to lower. What does the Ohio handbook direct you to do?

Correct answer: Keep moving off the tracks, through the gate if necessary.

Once already on the tracks, get the bus off them. This emergency instruction is not permission to enter a crossing when warning lights flash or gates are lowering or down.

  5. What makes an Ohio exempt-crossing designation effective for the special bus-stop requirement?

Correct answer: PUCO approval, the ordered signs and satisfaction of its other conditions.

The Public Utilities Commission must approve the designation, appropriate signs must be erected and any other ordered conditions satisfied. It is not permission to disregard a train or active warning signals.

  6. A train clears one track, but the red lights continue flashing at a multi-track crossing. What should you do?

Correct answer: Remain stopped; another train may be approaching.

A second train can approach on another track. Wait for the gates to rise, flashing warnings to stop and a safe crossing opportunity after checking all tracks.

  7. Your school bus stalls on the tracks and cannot clear them promptly. What is the priority?

Correct answer: Evacuate everyone immediately away from the tracks.

A bus stalled or trapped on tracks requires immediate evacuation. Move far away at an angle away from the tracks and toward an approaching train's direction, avoiding the area where debris may be pushed.

  8. The bus is stopped after an incident, with no immediate danger inside. How should evacuation be decided?

Correct answer: Compare the danger of staying aboard with the danger outside.

Evacuation can expose children to moving traffic and other hazards. Assess the emergency and evacuate when staying aboard is more dangerous; do not delay when an immediate threat requires exit.

  9. Smoke and fire threaten the bus's occupied passenger area. What should you do first?

Correct answer: Evacuate the students to a safe place.

Fire or a serious threat of fire requires evacuation. Protect passengers and obtain emergency help; a practice question is not training to fight a bus fire.

Source: Ohio Commercial Driver License Manual, HSY 7605 7/26, Section 10.3.1 (July 2017); physical PDF page 122 (printed 10-6); reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  10. The normal entrance is unsafe to use during an evacuation. What should guide your choice of another exit?

Correct answer: The hazard location and the safest usable exit.

Choose the front, rear, both, side, window or roof exits according to the emergency and their usability. Do not direct students through the hazard merely to use the usual entrance.

Source: Ohio Commercial Driver License Manual, HSY 7605 7/26, Section 10.3.2 (July 2017); physical PDF page 122 (printed 10-6); reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  11. If time and conditions permit, how should you secure the bus before directing an emergency evacuation?

Correct answer: Set the brake, select park or neutral, stop the engine and take the key.

The handbook's evacuation procedure secures the vehicle against movement and uses hazard lamps. Contact dispatch if time permits, but do not delay an urgent evacuation to complete a call.

Source: Ohio Commercial Driver License Manual, HSY 7605 7/26, Section 10.3.2 (July 2017); physical PDF page 122 (printed 10-6); reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  12. Why teach emergency-exit procedures to all students, even when trained student helpers are assigned?

Correct answer: The assigned helpers may be absent when an emergency occurs.

Assigned helpers are useful, but every student needs basic evacuation knowledge. Planning must account for an emergency on a day when those helpers are not riding.

Source: Ohio Commercial Driver License Manual, HSY 7605 7/26, Section 10.3.2 (July 2017); physical PDF page 122 (printed 10-6); reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  13. Once students have reached the evacuation meeting place, what must the driver establish?

Correct answer: That all students are accounted for and any injuries are identified.

Keep students together at the safe meeting location, account for everyone and check their condition. Communicate with dispatch and responders rather than allowing students to wander back.

Source: Ohio Commercial Driver License Manual, HSY 7605 7/26, Section 10.3.2 (July 2017); physical PDF page 123 (printed 10-7); reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  14. A train is approaching a bus trapped on the rails. In which direction should evacuees move?

Correct answer: Away from the tracks, angled toward the approaching train.

Move well away from both the bus and the tracks. Angling toward the approaching train takes evacuees away from the direction debris may be carried after impact.

Source: Ohio Commercial Driver License Manual, HSY 7605 7/26, Section 10.4.4 (July 2017); physical PDF page 125 (printed 10-9); reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  15. Which annual drill program does Ohio specify for students who ride school buses to and from school?

Correct answer: Three drills: front exit, rear exit, and split front/rear exit, each at least once annually.

The rule specifies the three evacuation patterns, each at least once annually. Preschool and special-needs procedures may require modification; a practice quiz does not replace a supervised drill.

  16. When an Ohio school bus begins a non-routine trip, what must passengers receive?

Correct answer: Safety instructions including exits, clear aisles and remaining seated behind the barrier.

Passengers receive safety instructions at the beginning of the non-routine trip, including the required bus-specific topics and the owner’s safe-riding rules. The 2025 text does not state the old return-trip exclusion.

Ohio school bus: test 3

Railroad crossings, emergencies and evacuation. 16 questions with immediate explanations. Independent study, not a BMV examination or registered ELDT.

Study notes: school bus

School-bus practice combines handbook safety concepts with current Ohio rules. Amber approach lights are used approximately 300 feet before the stop whenever practical. Ohio school-bus railroad procedures require the left window open, a full stop, parking brake, neutral and the service door fully open for looking and listening. Do not substitute another state’s procedure.

Use Ohio’s operating rules

  • On divided highways or roads with four or more traffic lanes, arrange residence-side pickup and discharge; warning lamps do not authorize pupils to cross them.
  • Do not back at pickup or discharge locations while pupils are outside. Account for every pupil before moving.
  • Do not fuel with pupils aboard, with the engine running or while smoking.
  • Non-routine trips require a safety briefing. The additional pre-trip exception needs the same driver’s documented routine inspection on that same day.

Practice 64 questions with answer explanations. Complete hands-on instruction and any required registered ELDT separately. Some manual chapters are older; check the handbook guide for source dates and coverage.
