  1. A new construction site restricts sight distance on your school-bus route. What does Ohio require for identified route hazards?

Correct answer: Document them and provide the information to affected drivers.

Identified hazards must be documented and provided to drivers whose routes are affected. Drivers should report construction, poor visibility, restricted sight distance, railroad crossings and other hazards.

  2. Two students argue inside while other children are still unloading. What should your attention remain on first?

Correct answer: The children and traffic outside until unloading is safe.

Loading and unloading demand exterior observation. Once students are safely away, handle the behavior issue in a safely stopped and secured bus according to local procedures.

  3. A passenger's behavior prevents you from safely driving the school bus. What should you do?

Correct answer: Stop and secure the bus safely, then request authorized assistance.

Use a safe stopping location and follow the school's assistance and discipline procedures. Do not put a student out at an unauthorized location.

  4. In an emergency stop with working ABS on your school bus, what should you avoid?

Correct answer: Pumping the brake pedal.

Do not pump the brakes of an ABS-equipped bus in an emergency. Apply the braking force needed to stop safely while maintaining control.

Source: Ohio Commercial Driver License Manual, HSY 7605 7/26, Section 10.6.3 (July 2017); physical PDF page 126 (printed 10-10); reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  5. What does ABS fail to protect a school bus from?

Correct answer: A skid caused by taking a turn too fast.

ABS helps with brake-induced wheel lock. It does not make excessive cornering speed, close following or poorly maintained brakes safe, and it does not guarantee a shorter stop.

Source: Ohio Commercial Driver License Manual, HSY 7605 7/26, Section 10.6.5 (July 2017); physical PDF page 126 (printed 10-10); reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  6. Strong crosswinds begin pushing your school bus sideways. What is the appropriate response?

Correct answer: Reduce speed and, if necessary, stop safely and contact dispatch.

The large side area makes the bus vulnerable to wind. Maintain a firm grip, anticipate gusts, slow down and wait in a safe place if conditions require it.

Source: Ohio Commercial Driver License Manual, HSY 7605 7/26, Section 10.7.2 (July 2017); physical PDF page 126 (printed 10-10); reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  7. As you turn away from a curb, why check the school bus's rear overhang in the mirrors?

Correct answer: Its tail can swing outward toward nearby people or objects.

A long rear overhang can sweep outward during a turn. Check before and during the movement; do not treat a handbook example as an exact clearance for every bus.

  8. At an Ohio pickup or discharge stop, may you back the bus while pupils are outside it?

Correct answer: No; that backing movement is prohibited.

Ohio prohibits backing at pickup or discharge locations while pupils are outside. Arrange the approved maneuver and student movement so the required safety conditions are met.

  9. Your authorized pickup requires unavoidable backing. In what order should you handle students?

Correct answer: Board them before backing, then watch for late arrivals.

At pickup, have all students aboard before unavoidable backing and watch for latecomers. At drop-off, complete any necessary backing before students unload.

  10. When does Ohio waive an additional pre-trip inspection immediately before a non-routine trip?

Correct answer: When the same driver documented a routine-service pre-trip inspection that same day.

Otherwise the pre-trip must be completed and documented immediately before departure. The exception requires both the same day and the same driver’s documented inspection during routine service.

Source: OAC 3301-83-16(E); current Ohio Laws text reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  11. The route has ended and the bus seems quiet. What must the driver still do?

Correct answer: Walk through and check for sleeping or hiding students.

A physical post-trip check can find a student who is asleep or hidden from the driving position. Also check belongings, exits and visible problems and make required reports.

Source: Ohio Commercial Driver License Manual, HSY 7605 7/26, Section 10.2.6 (July 2017); physical PDF page 121 (printed 10-5); reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  12. During the school-bus post-trip inspection, you find a mechanical problem. What should you do?

Correct answer: Report it immediately to the responsible supervisor or school authority.

The handbook calls for immediate reporting of problems and special situations. Follow the operator’s defect, repair and out-of-service procedures; a report is not permission to operate unsafe equipment.

Source: Ohio Commercial Driver License Manual, HSY 7605 7/26, Section 10.2.6 (July 2017); physical PDF page 121 (printed 10-5); reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  13. Which fueling setup follows Ohio’s school-vehicle rule?

Correct answer: No pupils aboard, engine off and no smoking.

Ohio prohibits fueling with pupils aboard, while the engine runs or while smoking. Do not import another state’s greater-hazard passenger exception into this rule.

Source: OAC 3301-83-20(A)(8); current Ohio Laws text reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  14. Athletic equipment will not fit on pupils’ laps and would displace seated pupils if loaded in the rear. May the driver make them stand to carry it?

Correct answer: No; arrange space without displacing pupils or creating standees.

The rule permits suitable rear storage but says equipment must not displace students or create standees. Keep a clear aisle to all doors and emergency exits and secure required special-needs equipment.

Source: OAC 3301-83-20(B); current Ohio Laws text reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  15. How may medically necessary oxygen for a pupil be carried under the Ohio school-vehicle rule?

Correct answer: Properly secured in portable units weighing less than 15 pounds total each.

The rule allows medically necessary oxygen when secured and housed in portable units weighing less than 15 pounds total each. Follow the student’s transport plan and trained handling procedures.

Source: OAC 3301-83-20(A)(10); current Ohio Laws text reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  16. What maximum on-road driving time does Ohio’s school-bus rule set in any 24-hour period?

Correct answer: Ten hours; layover time is not counted as operating time.

Operation means on-road driving under this rule, with no more than ten hours in any twenty-four-hour period. Layover time is excluded from that count; other applicable duties and fatigue restrictions still matter.

Ohio school bus: test 4

Ohio operations, trips and pupil safety. 16 questions with immediate explanations. Independent study, not a BMV examination or registered ELDT.

Study notes: school bus

School-bus practice combines handbook safety concepts with current Ohio rules. Amber approach lights are used approximately 300 feet before the stop whenever practical. Ohio school-bus railroad procedures require the left window open, a full stop, parking brake, neutral and the service door fully open for looking and listening. Do not substitute another state’s procedure.

Use Ohio’s operating rules

  • On divided highways or roads with four or more traffic lanes, arrange residence-side pickup and discharge; warning lamps do not authorize pupils to cross them.
  • Do not back at pickup or discharge locations while pupils are outside. Account for every pupil before moving.
  • Do not fuel with pupils aboard, with the engine running or while smoking.
  • Non-routine trips require a safety briefing. The additional pre-trip exception needs the same driver’s documented routine inspection on that same day.

Practice 64 questions with answer explanations. Complete hands-on instruction and any required registered ELDT separately. Some manual chapters are older; check the handbook guide for source dates and coverage.
