Card 1 · Uncontrolled intersection tie

You and a car on your right reach an intersection at the same time. Neither road has stop signs, yield signs, or traffic signals. Both drivers intend to go straight. Who must yield?

  1. You must yield to the car on your right
  2. The other driver must yield because you are on the left
  3. The driver whose car is smaller must yield
  4. The driver traveling on the narrower road must yield
Show answer for card 1

Correct answer: You must yield to the car on your right

At an uncontrolled intersection, a simultaneous arrival is resolved by yielding to the vehicle on the right. Do not use vehicle size or road width to decide who goes first.

Card 2 · Moving emergency vehicle

An ambulance approaches from behind with flashing emergency lights and its siren sounding. You are clear of intersections, the right shoulder is safe to use, and no officer directs otherwise. What should you do?

  1. Keep moving at the speed limit until the ambulance changes lanes
  2. Stop immediately in the center of your travel lane
  3. Move left so the ambulance can pass on your right
  4. Slow, move safely to the right shoulder, and stop
Show answer for card 2

Correct answer: Slow, move safely to the right shoulder, and stop

Yield to the approaching ambulance, move safely as close as possible to the right edge, and stop clear of intersections. Remain stopped until it passes unless a law enforcement officer directs otherwise. The scenario provides a safe right shoulder.

Card 3 · Children still crossing after bus signals end

You stopped behind a school bus unloading children. Its warning lights go off and the stop arm folds in, but a child is still crossing the road ahead of you. What should you do?

  1. Remain stopped until the child is clear and it is safe
  2. Proceed because the bus has ended its warning signals
  3. Pass slowly while keeping as far from the child as possible
  4. Start moving unless the bus driver gives another stop signal
Show answer for card 3

Correct answer: Remain stopped until the child is clear and it is safe

The stop arm folding in does not clear the road. A child still in the street has to reach the curb before you move, so stay stopped until the crossing is finished.

Card 4 · Choosing a safe merge gap

Your entry lane joins moving traffic without a stop control. There is a usable gap behind one car, while the space beside you is occupied. What is the best way to merge?

  1. Move into the occupied space because an entry lane gives you priority
  2. Keep your exact speed and require the traffic beside you to adjust
  3. Drive across the lane boundary before checking whether the gap stays open
  4. Adjust your speed and position to enter the gap safely
Show answer for card 4

Correct answer: Adjust your speed and position to enter the gap safely

DDS advises adjusting speed and position for a safe merge. Choose usable space in the traffic flow instead of assuming nearby drivers must make room for your car.

Source: Georgia DDS Drivers' Manual 2023-2024, Section 5, p. 17, Laws Governing Right-of-Way / merging into other traffic. Current HTML corroboration accessed 2026-09-13: https://dds.georgia.gov/section-5-. · Original question review: 2026-09-13

Card 5 · U-turn with restricted sight distance

There is no no-U-turn sign, but you are near a hilltop where drivers approaching from the other side cannot see your car. May you make a U-turn there?

  1. No, the blocked view makes this an unsuitable place for a U-turn
  2. Yes, because a posted prohibition is required to prevent the turn
  3. Yes, if you complete the turn without stopping
  4. No, unless you sound the horn before crossing the opposing lane
Show answer for card 5

Correct answer: No, the blocked view makes this an unsuitable place for a U-turn

Do not make a U-turn near the top of a hill when approaching drivers cannot see you. The absence of a no-U-turn sign does not remove this visibility restriction.

Source: Georgia DDS Drivers' Manual 2023-2024, Section 5, p. 20, U-Turns / visibility near hilltops. Current HTML corroboration accessed 2026-09-13: https://dds.georgia.gov/section-5-turning-signals-parallel-parking. · Original question review: 2026-09-13

Card 6 · Fog and smoke

If you must continue through fog, which headlight setting generally gives the better view of the road?

  1. Low beams, with speed reduced for the visibility.
  2. High beams, to project more light into the fog.
  3. Parking lights, to avoid reflecting light back.
  4. No headlights, if you can see another car's lights.
Show answer for card 6

Correct answer: Low beams, with speed reduced for the visibility.

Use low beams and reduce speed in fog. High beams can reflect glare back at you and make it harder to see the road.

Card 7 · Emergencies

Your right wheels drop onto the shoulder, and there is room ahead to regain control. What should you avoid doing?

  1. Holding the steering wheel firmly while slowing.
  2. Easing off the accelerator to reduce speed.
  3. Checking traffic before returning to the pavement.
  4. Jerking the steering wheel to get back immediately.
Show answer for card 7

Correct answer: Jerking the steering wheel to get back immediately.

Do not yank the vehicle back onto the pavement. Hold the wheel securely, reduce speed in a controlled manner, and assess traffic and a safe return point before re-entering. Avoid sudden hard braking.

Card 8 · Following distance

You are following traffic as weather and visibility deteriorate. How should your following gap compare with the one used in good conditions?

  1. Increase it to allow more time and room to respond.
  2. Keep it unchanged if your brakes are in good condition.
  3. Shorten it so the vehicle ahead is easier to see.
  4. Set it only by how fast the vehicle ahead is moving.
Show answer for card 8

Correct answer: Increase it to allow more time and room to respond.

Leave more space in poor conditions. The gap must allow you to respond and stop safely if the vehicle ahead slows or stops; sound brakes alone do not remove the effects of visibility and traction.

Card 9 · Motorcycles

A motorcycle ahead changes position within its lane near rough pavement. How should you interpret that movement?

  1. The rider is necessarily preparing to leave the roadway.
  2. The rider is inviting you into the rest of the lane.
  3. The rider may be avoiding a surface hazard you barely notice.
  4. The rider must be correcting a mechanical failure.
Show answer for card 9

Correct answer: The rider may be avoiding a surface hazard you barely notice.

Potholes, seams, gravel, and other surface conditions can pose greater difficulty for a motorcycle than for a car. Allow room for the rider to adjust speed or position without assuming a turn or an invitation to pass alongside.

Card 10 · Warning signs

After seeing this sign, which road layout should you prepare for?

Yellow diamond with a black arrow following several alternating bends.
FHWA MUTCD / Standard Highway Signs — source and adaptations in /signs/LICENSES.md
  1. One required turn at the next intersection.
  2. A series of curves along the road ahead.
  3. Two lanes that alternately change direction.
  4. A straight road with a median beginning.
Show answer for card 10

Correct answer: A series of curves along the road ahead.

This winding-road warning calls attention to a series of curves ahead. It does not direct you to turn at an intersection or set a numerical speed limit.

Card 11 · Warning signs

This is a fixed roadside sign, not an illuminated signal. How should you respond to it?

Yellow diamond containing a vertical black housing with red, yellow, and green circles.
FHWA MUTCD / Standard Highway Signs — source and adaptations in /signs/LICENSES.md
  1. Treat its green circle as permission to proceed.
  2. Stop beside the sign and wait for it to change.
  3. Assume the next intersection has no controls.
  4. Slow down and look for traffic signals ahead.
Show answer for card 11

Correct answer: Slow down and look for traffic signals ahead.

The sign warns of a signal-controlled intersection ahead. Its printed colored circles do not display the actual signal's current phase.

Card 12 · Traffic signals

You approach a pedestrian hybrid beacon displaying alternating flashing red lights. What should you do?

  1. Continue slowly if the car ahead has just crossed.
  2. Stop, then proceed when pedestrians have cleared the crosswalk.
  3. Wait for a green light before moving in any circumstances.
  4. Stop only while both red lights are steadily illuminated.
Show answer for card 12

Correct answer: Stop, then proceed when pedestrians have cleared the crosswalk.

During the alternating flashing-red phase, each driver must make a full stop. Proceed when pedestrians have cleared the crosswalk and it is safe; this beacon does not require waiting for a green light.

Card 13 · First learner permit examinations

A first-time applicant is obtaining a Georgia Class CP learner's permit. Which examinations does the permit checklist require?

  1. Knowledge and road skills examinations.
  2. Vision and road skills examinations.
  3. Vision and knowledge examinations.
  4. Only a knowledge examination.
Show answer for card 13

Correct answer: Vision and knowledge examinations.

The CP checklist requires passing vision and knowledge examinations. The road-skills test belongs to the later license process, not this first permit stage.

Card 14 · Missed school ADAP course

A Georgia teen applying for Class D was unable to complete ADAP through high school. Which DDS option can satisfy this alcohol-and-drug-awareness requirement?

  1. Substitute the regular driver-education course.
  2. Complete the DDS eADAP teen program.
  3. Wait until 17 and omit ADAP.
  4. Use a parent's ADAP completion certificate.
Show answer for card 14

Correct answer: Complete the DDS eADAP teen program.

DDS offers eADAP for teens who cannot complete ADAP through high school. The separate parent course and ordinary driver education are not substitutes for the teen's completion.

Card 15 · Ordinary first-time Class C age

For Georgia's ordinary first-time Class C application path, what is the minimum age? Assume no out-of-state transfer or military exception applies.

  1. 16 years old.
  2. 17 years old.
  3. 21 years old.
  4. 18 years old.
Show answer for card 15

Correct answer: 18 years old.

The ordinary Class C minimum is 18. DDS separately identifies qualifying transfer and military situations, so this is not an exception-free rule for every applicant.

Card 16 · All-way stop arrival order

At an all-way stop, a car on your left stopped before you did. You have now stopped too, and the intersection is clear. Which driver should proceed first?

  1. You, because the other car is on your left
  2. You, if your car can cross the intersection faster
  3. The other driver, who stopped before you
  4. Both drivers together, because both have stopped
Show answer for card 16

Correct answer: The other driver, who stopped before you

At an all-way stop, arrival order applies when the vehicles did not arrive together. The right-side tie rule does not let a later arrival take an earlier driver's turn.

Card 17 · Safe lane available beside a stopped patrol car

A patrol car with flashing blue lights is stopped on the right shoulder. You are in the right lane of a highway with two lanes in your direction. The left lane is clear, and changing lanes is lawful and safe. What should you do?

  1. Stay in the right lane because the patrol car is off the pavement
  2. Move into the left lane to leave space beside the patrol car
  3. Stop in the right lane until the patrol car switches off its lights
  4. Move onto the shoulder behind the patrol car before passing
Show answer for card 17

Correct answer: Move into the left lane to leave space beside the patrol car

Georgia's move-over guidance calls for a safe, lawful move into a lane not adjacent to the stopped emergency vehicle. This scenario is different from pulling over for an emergency vehicle approaching from behind.

Source: Georgia DDS Drivers' Manual 2023-2024, Section 5, p. 18, The Move Over Law. Current HTML corroboration accessed 2026-09-13: https://www.gahighwaysafety.org/move-over-law/. · Original question review: 2026-09-13

Card 18 · Passing with a hill blocking the view

You are considering passing a slow car on a two-lane road. A nearby hill hides any oncoming traffic beyond its crest. What should guide your decision?

  1. Begin passing if the car ahead is traveling well below the limit
  2. Begin passing if no oncoming vehicle is visible at this instant
  3. Stay behind until you can verify a safe, lawful passing opportunity
  4. Sound the horn so unseen oncoming drivers know you are passing
Show answer for card 18

Correct answer: Stay behind until you can verify a safe, lawful passing opportunity

A hill crest hides oncoming traffic, and a car coming over it would have nowhere to go. Stay behind until you are past the hill and can see a long, clear stretch with no solid line on your side.

Source: Georgia DDS Drivers' Manual 2023-2024, Section 5, p. 19, Passing is prohibited on two-lane roads / hills and curves (begins). Current HTML corroboration accessed 2026-09-13: https://dds.georgia.gov/section-5-. · Original question review: 2026-09-13

Card 19 · Parking beside an already parked car

Every curbside space is occupied. You plan to leave your car on the street side of a parked car while going into a shop. Is using hazard lights enough to make that parking permitted?

  1. Yes, if the hazard lights stay on while you are away
  2. No, you must find a place where parking is allowed
  3. Yes, if other drivers can steer into the opposing lane
  4. Yes, if you will be gone for only a few minutes
Show answer for card 19

Correct answer: No, you must find a place where parking is allowed

Parking on the street side of an already parked vehicle is prohibited. Hazard lights or a short errand do not turn that double-parking location into a lawful parking space.

Source: Georgia DDS Drivers' Manual 2023-2024, Section 5, p. 20, Stopping, Standing, and Parking / street side of a parked vehicle. Current HTML corroboration accessed 2026-09-13: https://dds.georgia.gov/section-5-turning-signals-parallel-parking. · Original question review: 2026-09-13

Card 20 · Vehicle safety

Another driver used your car and changed the seat and mirror positions. When should you restore a clear, comfortable driving view?

  1. Before you begin moving the vehicle.
  2. While rolling slowly out of the parking space.
  3. After merging into the normal traffic flow.
  4. When the first turn gives you a better view.
Show answer for card 20

Correct answer: Before you begin moving the vehicle.

Adjust the seat and mirrors before driving. You need a clear view and suitable driving position before you move into traffic, not while trying to steer through it.
