Question 1 of 10Signals and right of way
  1. 1. Your light turns green while a pedestrian is still lawfully crossing in front of you. What should you do?
  2. 2. You want to turn right at a steady circular red light. No sign prohibits the turn. What is required first?
  3. 3. A traffic signal at an ordinary road intersection flashes red. How should you treat it?
  4. 4. You have stopped at a nonfunctioning signal. A vehicle is still in the intersection. Does your stop alone let you enter?
  5. 5. A U-turn is otherwise permitted, but an approaching vehicle is close enough to create an immediate danger. What is required?
  6. 6. Your turn signal is on, but moving from the shoulder into traffic would force another driver to brake sharply. Should you move?
  7. 7. An obstruction requires you to cross the center of the road. An oncoming vehicle is close and is using its unobstructed side. What must you do?
  8. 8. No exception allowing a pass on the right applies. How should you overtake a vehicle moving in your direction?
  9. 9. The vehicle ahead is preparing to turn left. Is that fact alone enough to make passing it on the right lawful?
  10. 10. Your mirror shows a gap in the next lane. What must be established before moving out of your lane?

Study & prepare

Your Maryland study guide

Use this Maryland permit practice guide to choose a starting point and compare the available study formats. Its leading topic groups are lanes, turns, passing & parking, signs & signals and sharing the road; these describe this practice selection, not the agency’s published test weighting. Read each situation before choosing an answer, then use the explanation and source link to understand the rule behind it. When an answer surprises you, return to that part of the handbook rather than memorizing the position of the correct choice. Review your missed questions before starting another test. These independent exercises support handbook study; they are not the licensing examination or a guarantee of passing.

When can I apply for a Maryland learner's permit?

Maryland's minimum learner's permit age is 15 years and 9 months. You need the permit before driving on public roads or beginning behind-the-wheel driver education. Applying also involves the MVA's document requirements, a vision screening and a knowledge test; reaching the minimum age alone is not enough.
