Your North Dakota study guide

Use this North Dakota permit practice guide to choose a starting point and compare the available study formats. Its leading topic groups are licensing & laws; these describe this practice selection, not the agency’s published test weighting. Read each situation before choosing an answer, then use the explanation and source link to understand the rule behind it. When an answer surprises you, return to that part of the handbook rather than memorizing the position of the correct choice. Review your missed questions before starting another test. These independent exercises support handbook study; they are not the licensing examination or a guarantee of passing.

What is the minimum age for a North Dakota instruction permit?

A North Dakota instruction-permit applicant must be at least 14. Applicants under 18 also need the required parental or guardian approval and sponsorship. The permit is for supervised driving; reaching 14 and passing the knowledge test do not authorize independent operation of a passenger car.

How do I obtain my first North Dakota learner's permit?

Who may supervise a North Dakota instruction-permit driver?

Your supervisor must hold a valid license for the vehicle class, be at least 18, and have at least three years of driving experience. That person must sit beside you. These are instruction-permit conditions, so passing the knowledge test does not remove the requirement for a qualified accompanying driver.
