Important test rules

  • Administrative rule specifies a MINIMUM of 35 questions, not an exact guaranteed count.
  • Other languages, oral examinations and interpreters may be available under the rule; English-only is not asserted.
Sources & exam details
  • Exact questions/correct/mistakes deliberately null because a minimum length is not an exact length.
  • At the statutory minimum of 35, 28 correct would be required; that conditional calculation is not an operational count.
  • No distinct adult versus teen numeric format found.

Illinois Practice Test 1

Practice mode
Question 1 of 10Red-light stop position
  1. 1. At a steady red light, a marked stop line lies before the crosswalk. Where should the front of your car be when you make the required stop?
  2. 2. Every lamp facing you at an ordinary traffic-light intersection is dark. This is not a pedestrian hybrid beacon, and no officer is directing traffic. What must you do?
  3. 3. You plan a turn in a business district. What is the minimum distance before the turn for a continuous turn signal under Illinois law?
  4. 4. Two same-direction lanes are separated by double solid white lines. What do those lines tell you?
  5. 5. You are overtaking a bicyclist. Another same-direction lane is available, and changing into it is safe, practicable, and legal. What must you do?
  6. 6. Under the ordinary Illinois parallel-parking rule on a two-way street, what is the maximum permitted distance between your right-hand wheels and the curb?
  7. 7. A road has four lanes, with two lanes in each direction and no physical median. A school bus with its red signals operating is stopped in the opposite direction. What does Illinois's opposing-traffic exception provide?
  8. 8. Your road ends at a T intersection with another highway. There are no signs, signals, or different controlling rules. What must you do before entering the continuing highway?
  9. 9. Traffic is flowing at the limit, but visibility and traction have worsened. How should you choose your speed?
  10. 10. Which adjustment helps reduce hydroplaning risk as water accumulates on the road?

Study & prepare

Your Illinois study guide

Use this Illinois permit practice guide to choose a starting point and compare the available study formats. Its leading topic groups are signs & signals, lanes, turns, passing & parking and hazards, weather & emergencies; these describe this practice selection, not the agency’s published test weighting. Read each situation before choosing an answer, then use the explanation and source link to understand the rule behind it. When an answer surprises you, return to that part of the handbook rather than memorizing the position of the correct choice. Review your missed questions before starting another test. These independent exercises support handbook study; they are not the licensing examination or a guarantee of passing.
