Your Mississippi study guide

Use this Mississippi permit practice guide to choose a starting point and compare the available study formats. Its leading topic groups are licensing & laws and hazards, weather & emergencies; these describe this practice selection, not the agency’s published test weighting. Read each situation before choosing an answer, then use the explanation and source link to understand the rule behind it. When an answer surprises you, return to that part of the handbook rather than memorizing the position of the correct choice. Review your missed questions before starting another test. These independent exercises support handbook study; they are not the licensing examination or a guarantee of passing.

How old must I be for a regular Mississippi learner's permit?

A regular Mississippi learner's permit is available from age 15. The separate temporary permit available at 14 is tied to enrollment in an approved high-school driver-education course. Do not treat that school-training credential as the regular permit; at 15, an eligible student can apply to upgrade it.

Which tests are required for a first Mississippi learner's permit?

All applicants must pass the knowledge examination and an eye examination before the learner's permit is issued. Study the Mississippi Driver's License Manual and bring the documents required for your age and situation. DPS recommends making an appointment at a Driver License Station; the regular permit is valid for two years.

Must every Mississippi applicant hold a learner's permit for a full year?

No. The regular teen permit process requires a 12-month holding period, but applicants 17 or older are exempt from that wait. DPS says they may obtain the permit and license on the same day if they meet the other requirements; turning 17 does not itself issue a license.
