Louisiana permit-test explanation sheet

A compact Louisiana reading view of 20 existing sourced practice explanations. Each card keeps the original question, correct answer and explanation together so that a qualified rule is not detached from its scenario.

A short sample of car driving questions. Read the handbook to cover the other topics you need.

Use this as a review aid after reading the handbook. It is not a state exam aid or a complete list of driving laws. Printing may use several pages; the layout does not shrink the text to promise a single sheet.

Review 1 · Signals and right of way

Your light turns green, but a vehicle is still clearing the intersection. What should you do?

Correct answer: Wait for the crossing vehicle to clear.

A green light permits movement only when the path is clear. It does not cancel the duty to yield to road users already in the intersection.

Review 2 · Signals and right of way

You are waiting to turn left on a steady green light. An oncoming car is going straight. Who must yield?

Correct answer: You must yield before crossing its path.

An ordinary green light is not a protected left-turn arrow. Oncoming vehicles and crossing pedestrians still have priority over your left turn.

Review 3 · Signals and right of way

A green arrow appears for your turn while a pedestrian remains in your path. What is the correct response?

Correct answer: Yield to the pedestrian before turning.

The arrow authorizes a direction, not a collision. Check that the intersection is clear of other road users before following it.

Review 4 · Signals and right of way

A signal changes to steady yellow while you can still stop safely before the stop line. What should you do?

Correct answer: Slow down and stop before the line.

Yellow warns that red is next. Stop when you can do so safely before the stopping position; do not accelerate to race the change.

Review 5 · Signals and right of way

At a flashing yellow traffic light, the intersection is clear. How should you proceed?

Correct answer: Slow down, check for conflicts and continue cautiously.

A flashing yellow signal warns of a hazard. It calls for caution and a careful traffic check rather than an automatic stop on every approach.

Review 6 · Lanes, turns and parking

What do yellow centerlines generally separate?

Correct answer: Traffic moving in opposite directions.

Yellow centerlines divide opposing traffic. White lane lines normally separate vehicles traveling in the same direction.

Review 7 · Lanes, turns and parking

A broken yellow centerline is on your side of a two-lane road. May you cross it to pass?

Correct answer: Only when the maneuver is otherwise legal and safe.

A broken line permits passing where other restrictions and conditions allow. It does not remove the need for adequate sight distance and a safe gap.

Review 8 · Lanes, turns and parking

Can you cross double solid yellow centerlines to overtake a slow car?

Correct answer: No; they prohibit passing across the centerline.

Do not confuse a permitted turn across centerlines with permission to pass. Double solid yellow centerlines prohibit the overtaking maneuver described.

Review 9 · Lanes, turns and parking

You want to change lanes across a dashed white line. What does the line allow?

Correct answer: A lane change when you have checked and can move safely.

Dashed white lines allow safe lane changes. Check mirrors and the blind spot, signal, and leave adequate space.

Review 10 · Lanes, turns and parking

What does a single solid white lane line tell you about changing lanes across it?

Correct answer: The movement is hazardous and requires great care.

The guide distinguishes a single solid white line from double solid white lines. A single solid white line warns that crossing it is hazardous.

Review 11 · Safety and road sharing

In good conditions, you reach a roadside post one second after the car ahead. What does the guide's three-second rule tell you?

Correct answer: Drop back to increase the following interval.

Count from when the car ahead passes a fixed object until you pass it. Less than three seconds indicates too little space under this basic guide rule.

Review 12 · Safety and road sharing

Rain reduces traction and visibility. What should happen to your following space?

Correct answer: Increase it beyond the normal dry-road interval.

Poor conditions increase the time and distance needed to respond. Leave more room and reduce speed rather than treating a dry-road interval as sufficient.

Review 13 · Safety and road sharing

Brakes are only one part of stopping. What else must your stopping space allow for?

Correct answer: The distance traveled while recognizing and reacting to the hazard.

The vehicle keeps moving before the brakes take effect. Perception and reaction distances are added to braking distance.

Review 14 · Safety and road sharing

Heavy rain makes the posted maximum speed unsafe. What should you do?

Correct answer: Reduce speed to one appropriate for the conditions.

A posted maximum assumes favorable conditions. Louisiana's general speed rule also requires a reasonable speed for the road, traffic, light and weather.

Review 15 · Safety and road sharing

After passing a truck, why should you avoid cutting closely in front of it?

Correct answer: The truck needs that space to stop safely.

Large trucks generally require more stopping room. Taking away their space cushion can create a rear-end collision if you then slow or stop.

Review 16 · Permits and driver responsibilities

A student has a Louisiana TIP but has not yet received a learner's permit. What driving does that TIP authorize?

Correct answer: Instruction or a skills test while accompanied by a driver education instructor.

A TIP has a limited training and testing purpose. It is not the same credential as a learner's permit for supervised practice.

Review 19 · Permits and driver responsibilities

A 15-year-old learner-permit holder wants to practice with a sibling. Which sibling satisfies OMV's stated supervisor category?

Correct answer: A licensed sibling at least 18 years old.

OMV permits supervision by a licensed parent or guardian, a licensed adult at least 21, or a licensed sibling at least 18. The sibling exception does not apply to every teenage friend.

Review 20 · Permits and driver responsibilities

A driver received a learner's permit at 15 and has now held it for 180 days but is still 15. Is the age-and-holding-period condition for an intermediate license met?

Correct answer: No; the driver must also reach 16.

For someone starting at 15, OMV requires at least 180 days with the learner's permit AND reaching age 16. Other licensing requirements must also be met.
